Conservatives hoping to attract younger supporters with video games
176
In order to try and pull in visitors to the Conservative Political Action Conference this week, organizers are going all out. They'll have Glenn Beck as a keynote speaker, the NRA will be on hand, and there will be a video game lounge equipped with Xboxes and Wiis. Why the games? The conference is aiming to bring in the under-30 crowd, and to do that, organizer Kevin McCullough has created something called the XPAC Lounge, an area outside the Conference where attendees will be able to play Xbox, snack on junk food, and attend a "late night rap/jam session" with cool conservative cats like Mike Huckabee and John McCain's blogging daughter.
Kevin McCullough's name sound familiar? He's the same conservative commentator who had to apologize to gamers after claiming the first Mass Effect game was "pushing our next generation of young men through the gates of hell." But apparently he's gotten over any issues he's had with interactive entertainment -- he now says that games like Guitar Hero and Call of Duty can help the conservative conference give this generation "a pat on the back and the encouragement of, 'We believe in you.'" All well and good; Just watch out for Sean Hannity. We hear he's a beast at Halo Wars.

Actually Rocketboy, I understand what you’re saying, but youth does not automatically mean I’m naive or unwise.
I was born with a very rare disease that I'm not going to get into in great detail, but suffice it to say, I've spent a lot of time in hospital beds and in the O.R. in a lot of whole lot of pain. I had to relearn to walk and I've survived it all bearing no grudges. I had to grow up very quick. Because of this I have a great perspective about people in bad situations and how to gut things out and do what you have to do, even if it’s going to hurt. And because there were people who were always there for me, I learned how to be there for other people.
So, yes, I am young, but for all I know I've had as much life experience and empathy than most people understand.

I may be liberal minded, but I wouldn't like it if the Democratic Party was trying to sell young adults with games and...a late night rap/jam session. It's equally creepy and shameful to their causes. Try getting bums in the seats with some good ideas and sane leaders instead.

Meghan McCain is a conservative? Since when?
She's kinda hot -- well, maybe in a chubby kinda way, but she's as progressive as they come.

Just want to say again that I understand what you were saying, Rocketboy. I hope I didn't sound like I was insulted that you said I didn't have enough life experiance. You had no way of knowing anything about me.

Soooo...a conservative group decides to have a gaming area for young people and everyone here is up in arms? Did they violate some kind of law I'm not aware about or something? Why are people making this such a big friggin deal??

You have to remember that most gamers swing to the left, while ignoring all the liberal/progressive assaults on gaming.
Asking for common sense from a strong left or right movement is like asking for the truth from your president. It just doesn't happen.

Sigh...
Just because someone is a Republican does not mean they are conservative (see John McCain and Megan McCain for good examples of this).
Just because someone is conservative does not mean they are a Republican (Glenn Beck, for example).
And anyone can enjoy video games regardless of political persuasion.
Do your research!

WTF, the neo-cons are now trying to brainwash the gamer community, the same community that could care less what clowns like lady-boy ann coulter have to say...
This is pathetic, every intelligent gamer knows that the republicans are criminals working for the corporations, war profiteers and banks.

Oh, fantastic. Now even the video game blogs are reminding Americans that things as petty and ridiculous as political affiliation are worth hating each other over.
Nothing says good old-fashioned American fun like hating an entire group of people for some asinine reason that we've been taught from youth was perfectly legitimate.

No matter what political faction did this, no matter whose big name guys were up on the podiums, this whole event sounds like it would be engineered by third-tier marketing bozos. Pandering at its finest, folks. What do you expect from politics, especially at a national level?

n1nesp1ne,
From your perspective, yes, I did make some bold claims that equate to the existence of space giraffes. And, while it would be awesome if they did exist, my long-winded comma splice of grammatical terror was just a regurgitation of things that have indeed happened since the dems took over congress in '07. You want a link? Scroll up a few comments to find a handy dandy chart that immediately points to this. And no, just to infuriate and annoy, I shall provide no proof. I enjoy watching angry libs cry at each other about how smart they truly are.
There are no tax cuts in the stimulus bill. None. Those are tax credits, my friend. You know what that means? It means you are still paying the taxes. It means that your paycheck is still dramatically smaller. It means that you might get a chunk (or all, who knows) of what you paid to the gubmint sent back to you once a year. Yeah, that's fine and dandy, but it does horrible things to the economy. A business can't exist if it gets taxed to death all year while hoping that it can survive April 14th. People can't shop at said business if they are missing massive chunks of their pay. Businesses can't survive if there is no income because people are tightening their belts instead of spending money that is being taken to pay for whatever BS programs are the flavor of the moment from the feds. Starting to get it? Probably not. This whole thread has been an exercise in headbutting a wall of stubborn ideologies (nupe, not excluding meself from that one either), but let's press on anyways, shall we?
There are no gigantic movements to get our healthcare systems into the mythical utopias you reference because people are constantly trying to get to the US to use our system. Didn't some high ranking Canadian recently hit the US to get a little TLC for his heart? Survey says yep.
Also, the healthcare bill might include a bit, if any, of what Republicans asked for, but there is still so much garbage that makes up the bulk that it's a damned good thing that it's getting the treatment. For instance, did you know that the bill would introduce nothing at all for four years after it's passed? Wait, that's not right, it would introduce four years of a massive tax increase with zero actual healthcare reform (take over?). Would any sane person want that? I would hope not, but every day reality proves otherwise.
Why do we have the highest cost? It's because doctors fear for their freaking licenses if they so much as fart the wrong way in their places of business. Seriously, malpractice insurance + mountains of paperwork provided by your favorite people has inflated the cost of medical care to such proportions that it, well, caused me to make another space giraffe claim in your eyes. Still true though. The tort reform thing has been brought to the table time and again in both the house and senate, and it has time and again been ignored by those in the supermajority (minus one, whoohoo! thank you Massachusetts!). Wanna know why? Democrats on ze hill receive lots of help, funding, representation, and general buddy-buddy-ness from trial lawyers. Tort reform would make them sad. We can't have sad trial lawyers. That would make sad democrats.
And finally, before moving on to your next statement, I just wanted to point out how amusing it is that you say we accept the notion that children should die? Really? Last time I checked, it was the left that was all about abortion and infanticide. Hell, Obama literally voted to keep legislation alive that makes it alright to let babies who survive an abortion attempt die. Kinda messed up if you ask me. You didn't, I know, but whatever. Look it up, it'll give you something to do.
Okay, here's a doozy. You say that the fed budget was around 2.8T when Obama took office. And, well, um... it's been one year, and it's 3.5T just one year after he took office? Do you have any idea how absurd that is? Do you know just how much money one trillion dollars is? That's $1,000,000,000,000. Lotsa zeros. If this crap isn't stopped, and stopped now, then the interest alone on what this dude has spent in ONE YEAR will start to eclipse the amount of actual value of everything on the planet. Space Giraffes. Still true. I may not be a practitioner of this logic thing you preached about, but maybe you should re-evaluate your own after reviewing what you said in that little statement.
As a little side note, I never once said that Bush was a saint. In fact, the same thing happened to him as did happen to Clinton (well, in reverse, but the concept is the same). Near the very end of his second term, Congress was flipped into Democratpalooza. It's a pretty safe bet to say that his non-war spending pretty much went out of control right there. Again, not a saint, but he did try to work with the other side instead of saying things like, and I quote, "We won," and moving on with his agenda. Yep, that happened too. It warms my heart to see you immediately disregard it as yet another long-necked space mammal. FINE, I'll explain President Clinton too. Super Dem Congress was cleaned out in '96 and he was forced to start dealing with those evil republicans. Suffice to say, the result is still talked about today in liberal circles as the greatest period of economic growth in US history. At least that's what Family Guy said. You guys get your news from that and the Daily Show, right? I dunno. I'm too busy trying to figure out why rocks break my teeth when I try to eat them.
Let's see... scanning your words... scanning... bleh... hmm, okay, this looks interesting. The "real unemployment number" as we say in my ignorant circles (you can use U-6 or whatever if you wanna look smrt), is indeed wonderfully reliable. Like the poster above, I'm not sure what you're going for here because you're agreeing with me. I'm sure other politicians in the past have done so as well (both sides of the political spectrum), but the way that unemployment is being spun today is just flat out dishonest. Still, what is the official number today... 9.8% or so? U-6 or not, isn't that number downright unacceptable? I wish that the 17% would get wider coverage so people would open their eyes a bit.
In closing, bleh, blah, blargh, shmeh, grunt. I mean, no, everything I said was not wild conspiracy theorist nonsense. I put it together from looking at numbers and history. And now, I am going to go outside and poop in my own yard because that's what we conservatives do, right?
In conclusion, read a book. Also, space giraffes are real. Prove me wrong.

Even as a right-winger, I see this as moronic. With the demographic they're targeting, if they're not already swayed to their side of politics, then they cannot be swayed. Stick to the older demographics, people. The only real reason they didn't come out to vote last year was because John McCain was such a terrible candidate for president.
