"you can't adjust the camera"

Shit, this was one thing I was really hoping to hear that would get improved.

I know it's not a huge deal, but I like being able to zoom in and out in an RTS.

being in the beta I can assure you it's everything you love about starcraft but with enough differences to jazz it up. Some of the old strategies still exist, but things like reavers don't exist anymore, nor firebats. Cloaking is only done by the mothership, and protoss gateways can become "warpgates" which allow you to warp in guys within any pylon area... and there's a mobile pylon unit. Oh yes, there is some cool stuff in SC2.

So far another big one is shortcut keys. E and D pretty much do everything... gone are the B P for probes, it's B E regardless of your race etc. Little things to make note of, but so many nice additions and an amazing waypoint system. Haven't found any bugs yet either... but it's hard to determine what is and isn't this early into learning the new game mechanics. Most of it is intuitive and easier to pick up on then the original SC imo.

For those that need beta, lots of people in wow have extra keys for sale/trade if you ask around. For any GMs around, I did NOT just get a sc2 beta key this way

Sounds perfect for starcraft fans.

But it also sounds like a perfect example of what I think is wrong with RTS games. Winning isn't about strategy, it's about knowing the most optimal way to build your forces. It's about the most efficient clicking, and the most encyclopedic knowledge of different units, build times and efficiency strategies.

This is why many people don't play RTS online anymore. Go up against a player who's memorised all the keys and can build an army in half the time you can, and you have no chance to win... even if his strategy is a simple tank rush, or a simple build-the-biggest-army.

I don't really know what the answer is, but I know that such RTS experiences stopped being fun for me a long time ago... and they definitely make the experience very intimidating and un-newbie-friendly.

If a game of Halo is like having a quick game of footie in the park with some random guys, a game of (insert RTS) is more like challenging a stranger to a one-on-one 2 hour game of chess.... and then realising after 10 minutes you have no chance to win.

The same argument could be poised of Counter Strike. I don't like to play that because I don't want to invest the amount of time it would take to actually begin enjoying it... I think you have a valid argument, but each RTS tries to shuffle it around somehow. Dawn of War is not Star Craft. Nor is Age of Empires Command and Conquer.

Most of the stuff yuo said is true to an extent, but RTS games have seen many different variations on the gameplay mechanics, and SC is for the ones who want the APM and on the fly strategy handling.

A really GOOD starcraft player will not just beat you to the finish line making units.. they will know what you're doing already because they're playing smart and build a counter as well as an offensive that works. If the game goes on longer they then shift their strategy to throw off the other player.

Then the TRULY AMAZING will take out your army with 4 micro managed ninjas. It really depends on how deep you want to go to enjoy it. Starcraft is the one everyone praises because it has that level of micro management for units that actually makes a difference in the outcome of the war. Few can make that claim.

If your complaint is that really good players can beat you really easily, well, then I don't think that's a problem. The only way you could avoid that is by dumbing down the game, and then it just wouldn't be fun.

The joy of Starcraft is in the fact that it's almost impossible to master. You're always learning new things and trying out new techniques. There's always someone better than you (luckily there are always people worse than you too). With the new match making system, every fight should be pretty fair.

Possibly because this hands-on is about StarCraft II and not "any RTS besides Starcraft"?

There are SO MANY people working to crack this beta so the other 99% of the world can play. Actually they're really close to being able to play against a computer singleplayer in the beta. They are able to, but the AI doesn't do anything. They're really close to fixing it though. We've been able to watch replays. After that we just gotta set up private servers and emulate b.net. http://botdev.org/doku.php

"games where resource management down to the millisecond can spell your doom or provide you that one squad of units that brings you back from the brink of annihilation."

Oh god. This made me throw up in my mouth a little. Is it wrong that I like StarCraft for the world and story, but hate the super-fast micromanagement? (that phrase alone sounds like something I'd have to do in hell) I wish they hadn't fallen off with StarCraft Ghost...

Wish blizzard would let my opt-in soon. I can't wait to try out the sequel to my favorite RTS ever. Ive waited this long, it just hurts harder to wait longer. *shrugs*

Starcraft is like an Apple product. Everyone complains about all the things it's missing, and how it's not nearly as functional as the alternatives... But then they'll learn to love it anyway.
