Based on the precedent set by your reaction to similar news for StarCraft 2 and Modern Warfare 2, we're guessing you're not going to like the information Command & Conquer 4 lead designer Sam Bass recently shared with Destructoid. According to him, the FMV-filled strategy title won't provide any LAN or dedicated server support to its players.
These two features were apparently struck from the game in favor of a server-based character progression system. Bass explained "if you go to another machine -- friend's house, Internet café -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you've unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can't really do dedicated servers with that." He also explained that the game's online networking is "a lot more solid," so you won't be left completely high and dry, as far as multiplayer skirmishes are concerned.
Still, we're worried about the future of the LAN-friendly strategy game, which appears to be turning into an endangered species. We've contacted Bono to see if he'd lend his musical support to a charity concert event.

Yeah, now lets just tally that up with how many kids die from disease, malnutrition, pirates, psychopaths, and god knows what else...
Now, if you make it "Every time you leave out LAN or dedicated server support for an online game, a child in your neighbor's house dies..." then they'll really care.

But most RTS games don't use dedicated servers. The only one I can think of that does is World in Conflict.

RTS games have never used dedicated servers except for a few occasions. This is not news.

B.net is a glorified gamespy, doesnt host anything (except WOW) but allows matchmaking, dedicated servers aren't important in RTS like they are in FPS because you wont miss a headshot because of lag. You can play Starcraft 1 on dial up, so I wouldnt be too worried.

Wrong you are, Warcraft 2, 3 and Starcraft have player hosting. Battle.net just does the match making. This is normal.

No Draco, missing a headshot is not as important as giving my army an order that it won't respond to until it's too late.
That's why people had private gateways in Starcraft.
But seriously, the only issue here is lack of LAN. Dedicated servers is a non-issue for RTS games.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone made some sort of LAN patch/mod whatever you want to call it... If someone can make GTA San Andreas into an online multi-player game, someone can patch a game to work on a LAN.

Where do people get this idea that if you don't upgrade every year/3 months/etc... then you won't be able to game on PC?

Wouldn't it make more sense to have LAN, and just have your profile downloaded from the server?
Or have LAN with more balanced profiles so it's not some OCD level 99 against their level 5 friend-for-not-much-longer?

Um, so what happens to my information when EA decides to cut bait with the servers?

Honestly, I can see why companies may have decided to do this for multiplatform games...but a PC exclusive? That just makes no sense at all O.o

Ehh, well, they're logic doesn't entirely work. I mean, you can save character statisics and have dedicated servers. Just look at Battlefield 2142. and Bad Company 2.
Both have dedicated servers and player progression.

Pft, I don't care about LAN support, or this game in general since I don't really like competitive RTS play. I just see this as a really dumb move.

Doesn't matter anyway.
C&C4 is hardly what I would call a good game.
I'll stick with the originals.
There better and 3 of them are free now

The way I see it. There's no point in buying a game that has parts of it dependent on an online server.
I still play a lot of old games and with this, I can't install it 5 years down the line and play it since it won't be able to contact the host server. I also wouldn't be able to play it with friends since they've ditched lan.
So they have lost a sale with me. I love C&C...

It is absolutely amazing what efforts these publishers and developers are taking to shit on the PC, it must be a very fun game for them.
There is no reason to cut these features except mostly to piss of PC gamers. You can't piss off console gamers because of their numbers and buying power apparently.
