I would laugh so goddamn hard if this was the real Jack Thompson. I mean, it IS possible seeing as how he has nothing better to do but scour sites like this. So I'm just gonna pretend it is.

If you want video game addiction to be treated as an "actuality" then you might as well say Facebook or the Internet in general can be classified as a real addiction.

@Jack Thompson (sigh, if that's even you, i really hate anonymity on the internet)

you are an idiot (whats with the filters joystiq), i don't need to say it, and no one else does, no one takes you seriously, especially after you got disbarred for proving to a judge that you were/are an idiot.

I don't know what "science" you are referring to, and if it isn't peer reviewed, please don't even try to cite it, that will make you look even more like an idiot.

People don't get addicted to games because games are addictive, they get addicted to games because they have addictive tendencies.

Also, besides the addictiveness part of it, games are fun, if parents don't offer "healthier" alternatives to their children, then guess what, they are going to play games, because it is FUN.

I don't think any kid would turn down his father if he was offered a fun day at a go-kart track or to go bowling with his dad, but that stuff simply doesn't happen as much any more sadly, and parents use a game as a babysitter.

So when parents attempt to take away these games "cold turkey", of course tantrums will ensue, the child doesn't know much else, why is his game being taken away, what did he do, what will he do as a substitute? Study?

these are children, it is up to the parents to manage what their children are doing, and as for banning violent games, adults can choose to do w/e the heck they want to do, welcome to the modern civilized world.

If I may ask what is with the insults? It isn't very professional to insult people. It just makes you look like an immature child.

Also, you say video games cause violence? What about all the other things in the media like books, movies, and music?

The bible has some pretty gory stuff in there. Perhaps we should ban that for all of the violence in it.

Just because you do not like video games doesn't give you the right to make everyone stop playing them.

We have a right to and if you try and take away that right you are on the road to fascism.

They don't cause violence. I have been playing violent video games since I was 5 and I have never done a violent act in all my life.

Exactly what Shaun said... Did you know that there have been WAY more religious related acts of violence in the past few years than video game related?

If this is Jack, and I hope that it is, how's that disbarment treating you? How's it feel to be discredited in the legal community, and to throw your future away on a stupid, self-righteous crusade?

Now would you kindly go die in a fire? Oh wait thats a quote from a game Bioshock where it makes you do anything one says, I must be brainwashed!!!

Good news, everyone! Through the use of quantum statistics ©, as well as a few small algorithms to convert the results to a readable percentile, I have calculated exactly how much Jack Thompson's opinion matters to the nearest 10e23.

It took my supercomputer exactly 72 hours to crunch the numbers, during which time the amount of harvested dark matter required to power it caused the destruction of a handful of civilizations.

But I digress, the answer is printed out on its built-in dot matrix printer was: 0%.

I don't necessarily like Bobby Kotick, but put him next to Jack Thompson and he becomes some sort of angel.

It seemed like a harmless statement but Thompson has no friends he can play Modern Warfare 2 with so he is out for revenge...

Not to be rude or anything to the other gamers on this site but insulting Jack Thompson just makes it seem like he is winning. If that is Jack Thompson and not someone pretending to be him please do not insult him. He doesn't need any more ammo against gaming.

Also, the gamers who send Jack Thompson death threats are fools. They are hurting us gamers, not helping us. So please, don't take the immature route and send a death threat. As I stated above Thompson does not need any more ammo against gaming.

If he has any at all which isn't likely.

"Gotcha"... All this moron has is a case of quote mining and truth bending, it wouldn't surprise me to find out he was a Christian. His argument is on par with marijuana causing schizophrenia in todays youth... (To be clear, I live in Vancouver BC Canada, and anyone that knows anything knows that this is one of the biggest and best importers of pot, I know hundreds of potheads and only two that have become schizophrenic Due to a pre-existing condition that marijuana or hallucinogenic drugs would flesh out.) That said, this sounds more like a case of if you let another side speak long enough, you'll hear enough to twist their words into fitting your argument. What I gathered from Bobby Kotick's speech was him covering his bases for a fact he doesn't play video games regularly, nothing more. I can't stand fanatics one way or the other, they have lost their objectivity. Everyone has a right to be heard, listening is another matter, Jack Thompson should be seeking psychiatric help!

Jack Thompson is a complete idiot.

So the guy can't play video games because they are so awesome he would spend all his time doing that and not being the CEO of a massive corporate entity.

Hmm, pretty damn obvious one there, eh? He couldn't spend all his time jerking off or watching TV either.

Also: "ALL the science"? Jesus christ.

I haven't seen anyone really getting his back in quite some time. Seems like he's largely ignored by everyone outside of the gaming community. After his courtroom antics, I would think most people would see him as too much of a liability to support.

I haven't researched this, so maybe someone will correct me, but it seems like the only people that really care about Jack Thompson are the gamers that laugh at him.

Honestly, Jack Thompson has polarized himself even from the people and groups that want the same thing he does. Multiple anti-game groups actually forced him to remove their support links and anything else referring to them from his site around the time of the Penny Arcade fiasco.

In short, not even the people that agree with him want to be associated with him.

I particularly liked the end of his letter:

"Please contact me at your earliest convenience."

Please! The guy blew his entire career in his mad pursuit of court cases involving video games. He can't practice law anymore now that he's been disbarred, which means that, unless he gets elected to public office, he is now incapable of doing /anything/ to influence video game laws.

The sad thing is, if he were sane, he could have had a long career of pushing for reasonable and sensible ways of keeping sexually explicit and/or violent video games away from minors (which the gaming industry explicitly supports with their voluntary enforcement of ESRB ratings).

But instead, he jumped into every case of video-game related violence, and then flaunted all laws and rules of decency for court proceedings in order to make his voice the loudest.

Various "Jacko" incidents included sending various judges email explicitly calling them corrupt, filing hundreds of "nuisance" suits which wasted months of our court systems' time, and my favorite, putting hardcore gay pornography into the evidence system without "sealing" it, essentially publicly publishing that material for the world to see with no parental/ age checks.

Whatever Jacko says, just ignore him. He's a lion with no teeth now.

I fail to see how it makes sense for 'addiction' and 'video games' to be classified in the same breath. People are addicted to drugs and alcohol, even sex or work. I'm of the belief that there are other factors in play that would make someone 'addicted' to video games -- depression, drugs & alcohol usage, etc. The symptoms are not the cause in and of itself.

This generation of Americans (the ones born in the '80s forward) grew up around video games. If it were an earlier generation, people like Jack Thompson would have an outcry against 'the violent lyrics' in music and 'sickening images' in movies. I mean, look at Tipper Gore and the whole run-up to the Parential Advisory sticker.

It's preposterous to think that because Bobby Kotick would say "If I play MW2 I wouldn't get any work done" that somehow it's the same thing as

I'm not sure what happened, but basically, video game 'addiction' is not the same thing as drug or alcohol addiction. Jack Thompson can't form the facts to fit his argument.
