It seems that, once again, our anonymous tipster was right on the money. The ESRB recently rated Tecmo Bowl Throwback for the PSN and XBLA platforms, describing it as a "top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the 'Tecmo Bowl Champion.'" Though the game earned an "E" rating, the listing mentions "cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops" and "a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage." How positively scandalous!
Surprisingly, the ESRB listing doesn't mention a twelve-foot-tall, cybernetic Bo Jackson who causes every player who thinks about tackling him to explode in a fountain of gore. So, we're guessing that feature isn't getting ported over from the original game.

Any idea whether they have the rights to use actual player names or not? I don't think they would be able to use current players, but it would make the game a lot better if former players were included.

Though I know it won't happen because of EA, I hope this has official rosters. Likewise, I'd die for RBI Baseball 2010 as a port of the NES game.

i loved me some RBI baseball. the american league all star team was the shit! mcgwire, canseco, gallaraga, those were the days! i could hit the corners of the plate everytime and strike out the side. of course, until the fatigue set in. you can actually download the game from here:

Did that a long time ago. There's a hacked Tecmo Bowl ROM with updated 2009 rosters you can play here: http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/nes/play2.php?id=6520 I just wish they'd make an official one - maybe with Madden's franchise mode and Tecmo's gameplay?

I wonder if the EA contract applies to "re-releases" as well

I don't think Tecmo Bowl has a license... Tecmo Super Bowl had all the teams and players...

The most recent Tecmo Bowl games on the DS and Wii VIrtual Console did not have any NFL teams/players. I assume that is due to the exclusivity rights the NFL has with EA.
I feel that not only did the exclusivity contract with the Madden franchise hurt gamers by taking away competition (like the ones from Visual Concepts, 989, MS game studios, Akklaim, Midway, etc.) be they good or bad, they at least encouraged more effort to earn gamers' money, than by having a monopoly. I find the exclusivity contrat also took away from our memories of some excellent games.
I loved the NES Tecmo Super Bowl, but it will have to remain as a memory [aside from purchasing said old hardware/software or emulation means].

I could be wrong, but I believe that the exclusivity contract only covers players that are CURRENTLY under contract with the NFL, which is the reason the recent All-Pro game was able to use old-school players.
If a Tecmo Bowl remake wanted to use Bo Jackson's likeness, EA's exclusive contract with the NFL would have no bearing on that, since Bo Jackson doesn't work for the NFL anymore. Instead, they would need Bo Jackson's permission.
That is why I think we don't see player names in remakes of old games. Because they would have to get a contract with each player individually, which is way more trouble than it's worth.

Original Tecmo Bowl had Walter Payton, who was more devastating than Bo Jackson.
