Like seasoned hunters, Aliens vs. Predators quickly and efficiently concluded BioShock 2's brief dominance atop Chart-Track's UK all-formats sales chart. The prior week, BioShock 2 unseated Mass Effect 2. Meanwhile, Just Dance refused to give up that #2 spot. Ubisoft's dance-a-thon title saw a 55 percent sales increase as BioShock 2 took a 77 percent dive into third place.
Thanks to the Winter Olympics going on in the great semi-white north of Canada, Sega saw a ski-jump boost in sales for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, which made its way back into the Top 10 in the eighth spot. Anthropomorphic and mushroom-tripping Olympians weren't the only ones to benefit from the hype, as Vancouver 2010 received a 274 percent increase and broke into the Top 40 at 11th place -- which is, like, a tin medal? Perhaps one of those chocolates wrapped in gold foil?

Unbelievable right? I refuse to believe anyone is playing it without a little thought in the back of their mind saying "You know this is rubbish, don't you? Sure, it's a great franchise, but this game is terrible. Admit it; you aren't even having fun."

AVP may not be ground breaking but it is an above average game. Not pointing specifically to either of you but a lot of gamers are starting to feel that if a game is not up to par with these high end franchises (GoW, Mass Effect, Etc), then they are total trash. Back in the days of Atari, NES, and SNES even the crappiest games were held to heart with SOME value based on it's own. Now we are at an age that we've seen such amazing games that the average one's just aren't fulfilling enough.

My opinion is that the demo was crap which I only implied and that got me down voted. There are other views in the world people.
I wasnt comparing it to another game at all or saying it had to be on the level of the great franchises at all. I played the demo, Got no enjoyment from it, Deleted it. Therefore it is crap based on my experiences with it other people played the same demo so no I wasnt expecting a chart topper there.

That is why I said I was not specifically pointing fingers at either of you. Just want you to know that your opinion is entirely respected by me.

I agree, we are just spoilt for choice with amazing quality games these days. Even the so-called shovelware isn't as bad as ET on the 2600, for example.
With AvP I think the strength of the franchise, rather than the relative quality of the game, is what's driving sales here in the UK. It is a fairly sub-par shooter, and a worse multiplayer experience than the PC AvP games from the early 2000's. I'm a huge fan of the franchise but the demo just put me off completely.

The demo was pretty crappy...but it's a poor reflection of the actual game. The game is definitely old-school (with the lack of iron sights and no crouching ability, it's a lot more like a Doom II run-n-gun scenario), and the Marine campaign certainly starts a little slowly, but by the end of the 3 campaigns, that game was fun as hell. Having 3 distinct species but only offering full-on deathmatch for the demo (not to mention choosing what is arguably the weakest MP map) was a terrible choice on Sega's part, and that is evidenced by how many people think the game sucks based on their demo experience. I'd say if you were turned off by the demo but are a fan of the respective franchises, at least give it a rental and see if the full release holds more appeal for you. I actually ended up really liking it (not 'AAA', but I'd probably give it an 8, maybe 8.5).

Thanks for the insight. I will give it a rent at some point, or pick up a pre-owned copy if it's cheap enough. Before playing the demo I was actually planning to buy it full price!
Got to admit, one of the biggest turn-offs was how easy it is to dominate as a Marine. I'm not the best FPS player by far, but I was destroying everything... just made me really question the balance of the multiplayer.

We may be spoiled by the top-tier AAA titles, but I would contest that it's a lack of inspiration rather than funds that makes a game fall short. Personally I'm quick to forgive huge flaws if a game has soul.. if the passion and vision of the creative team shines through. In this (and every other) industry, the bar is constantly raised. Devs with the insight and passion to keep pushing those boundaries (be it indie devs with a home PC and an idea, or big-hitters like Valve) deserve our praise and purchases, and those without it are extremely lucky to have hese kinds of successes at all, and they do so by riding IP and marketing waves rather than earning them artistically.
I'm not saying we can't enjoy games that aren't at the forefront of gaming, but this and every other creative industry is currently bloated with "artists" who just don't have the spark. Standards are the only weapons consumers have against an industry's descent into mediocrity. I say invest in passion and inspiration, and keep your money away from anyone who can put out "Rogue Warrior" :p

@edweird-
Danielewski. I love that book more with each re-reading. I'm still working on a House on Ash Tree Lane level for LBP, but it's a bit challenging, to say the least.

I'm glad to see AVP doing so well.
It's not a bad game, or not as bad as people say.
Though it mainly was made with AVP fans more than anyone else in mind.
Besides AVP selling well means Aliens Colonial Marines from Gearbox gets a better chance of coming out and sooner since it's release was going to be based off AVP's performance.
If you didn't like AVP maybe that one will be more up your alley.

The premise of AVP has always been great. Yet nobody seems to do anything cool with it. The movies are awful, the game seems awful. Somebody should throw a little money behind it, people are willing to buy a crappy version, imagine what they would spend on a good one.

I wouldn't say the premise behind AvP is all the great. I mean, it may have been fresh back in the 90's when the first Alien movie came out but the whole space marines vs space monsters thing has been stale for quite a while now.
Alien was alright, Predator was enjoyable but AvP was just a terrible excuse for a summer blockbuster.

@bluesky: You're making this 29 year old feel doubly old (and geeky)! The first ''Alien" film came out in 1979, not the 90's!

Oh boo-hoo, 90's is when I first the movie. Doesn't change a whole lot though.

I actually liked the Alien one the best. It was the shortest, unfortunately, but once I got the hang of controlling that crazy thing, it was immensely satisfying to run up on a Marine and impale him/her on my tail. It's a way better game than the demo implied, in my opinion.
