After completing 2009 with redesigned hardware and several high-profile games (including Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge and LittleBigPlanet), the PSP platform is looking for another strong lineup to carry it until the end of another year. Sony's senior vice president of publisher relations, Rob Dyer, told Industry Gamers that third parties will provide a "very robust lineup" in 2010 -- albeit one that has to face a very old problem.
"I think we had a great lineup last year. The biggest problem that plagued PSP was piracy; we have not been able to slow that down," Dyer said. "We think we have some answers going forward, but we're not ready to talk about that publicly at this point. So we're working on fixing that, because that's been a big problem. Publishers, when they put out good games, are not getting the same sales results that they got a few years back. So piracy's been a big issue and we're working on that very diligently to bring about some solutions."
Some solutions include the PSP Go, which focuses on digitally acquired games (through the PlayStation Store, of course!) and -- as recently demonstrated by third-person shooter SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 -- a form of potentially consumer-unfriendly online activation. And while Sony appears pleased with the platform's longevity, six years is a long time to still be tinkering with anti-piracy experiments.
"We're into the sixth year now on the platform, and that's a long time for a handheld," Dyer noted. "I think given where we're at right now, we're doing very, very well. But yes, the business has had problems and I think it all stems, candidly, from the piracy."

Hmm... Well, I got one for around 250 dollars, an extremely solid price when compared to the prices here at home (around 400 dollars). I got a PSP Go! as soon as I could since my last PSP broke like a year ago.
@Hokuto
Uhm... When I buy via the Playstation Store I save around 100 dollars per game, that's probably because I'm registered with an American account though. But if you're not living there you can save a lot of money by getting an american account, and then the PSP Go! isn't as obsolete as you might think.

Yeah, relaunch it with a UMD drive.
That's the only thing keeping me from buying a Go, it doesnt play any of my games

I like the PSP Go the way it is now. The only issue is the price. I don't mind the game library: there are hundreds of PSP Go games on the PSN and thousands that can be played through Remote Play (like PSOne titles).
If only they dropped the price - a lot - this would be a really great buy.

The more they focus on piracy and less on overall value / software, they're going to keep losing the battle. It's just as easy to pirate on the DS.

How about allowing you to download free copies of the game you already own? don't these umd things have barcodes and serial numbers? and once you register a code it deletes from a database of flags it or something.
If they wanna bring new buyers to it, consider the thing dead. If you wanna continue selling PSPs, better work with the narket you already have, everyone was standing in line already to upgrade their PSPs to this one but greedy Sony f'cked it up.

There's actually a cool PSP mod for cfw that dumps games you already own onto your memory stick. I don't see why it's so hard for Sony to do this for the PSP Go. Maybe they are worried that people will share their UMD with others? I dunno, but there are ways to bypass this if that's why they won't do it.

PSP2 please. Do a full court press on piracy with it and give it dual analogues. I want the same graphical ability ad the PS2 or even the original xbox with a compact psp go like form factor. The GO is a sexy beast but mine had dead pixels so I returned it. Maybe go all out with the mythical psp phone!

My launch 1000 had dead pixels as well. One of the key reasons I got rid of it before letting half my screen die.

This. A thousand times this. $170-$250 is far too much for a handheld.

from all the recent interviews that I've read, this is the first time Sony has even mentioned the PSP in a long time. its good to know they still, at the very least, publicly acknowledge its exsistence. hopefully there is some truth to what is said, because the PSP is hurtin.......for certain. Couldnt resist. :-P

The Game Boy was released in 1989. Its successor, the Game Boy Color, was released in 1998. That's nine years, and the original Game Boy was still on sale after the Color released.
Still, six years is a long time when you're being roundly trounced by the competitors - Sega gave up the ghost with their Game Gear after that amount of time.

the gameboy is a different beast tho.....think about it....they made like numerous version of it(just like the DS) and technology didnt advance that much then.....not to mention what competition did it have? The GameGear was about it and it didnt catch on like Sega had hoped.....

Can you guess why piracy is a problem? Because it's the most efficient content distribution for this Sony-forsaken platform.
UMDs are lost if you ever upgrade to Go.
Downloadable has mediocre value - no box, no manual, same price. And "hopefully" is up on PSN on the same time as retail boxes are out.
Go ahead Sony, keep blaming the scene and fighting piracy with nothing but inane firmware updates, instead of making the "legit" way more interesting.

Or, as The Consumerist seems to think, it's just as much (or more) about stopping people from buying used than it is about piracy. I disagree, but when I said so, I was told I was a corporate shill or just plain stupid.

I think the rash of firmware updates slowed it down considerably.

Yes but newer games have been requiring newer versions of official firmware to run properly. If you're running custom firmware it needs to be updated to continue playing/pirating newer games. If there isn't any new CFW's being released then you're stuck decrypting the files yourself to get them running which is a rather big deterrent.

Am I missing something? Has the PSP been doing that poorly that Sony needs to move to a PSP2?
Sure it's not like it's the #1 portable, but let's not kid ourselves. Nothing's going to topple Nintendo in that sector unless they have a very major screw up.
Heck the PSP was once again on top of the charts in Japan, a place it has held frequently enough over its lifetime.
As it stands, there's no need for Sony to rush to release a PSP2. They need more big exclusives though. Oh and if the next PSP is going to have some innovative/novelty method of input they need to announce it BEFORE Nintendo announces their next handheld.

It really seems like the PSP can't have a system-seller anymore. 2009 showed a wealth of great software that clearly didn't convince anyone (except the Japanese)
Piracy can be overcome with the right software. Certainly its damaging, but its not the all-consuming problem.
Though i do think it's too late for the PSP at this point. New hardware is needed to revise the whole image of handheld PlayStation.

Although my 2005 launch PSP is still working fine, I want to upgrade. The decision will be easy for me, but I have to wait until E3. If they introduce a PSP2 with all the right additions, then I will concede my many UMDs and upgrade to a brand new platform.
If they release an update to the ridiculous PSPGo, I will buy a PSP-3000.
Ya know, so I can actually still use all the proprietary crap I've bought the last five years. I won't get rid of it all for a more expensive device that offers less.
