We've lived with an unspoken fear in the back of our minds since the middle of January, when the nominees for the Writers Guild of America video game writing award were first announced. We weren't sure if we could live in a world where X-Men Origins: Wolverine was decorated over Assassin's Creed 2 and Uncharted 2 for having the year's best in-game writing. Fortunately, this fear has been dissuaded: Last night at the WGA awards ceremony, Uncharted 2 writer Amy Hennig took home the prize.
In a way, though, we feel bad for Ms. Hennig. How frustrating must it be to know that you can't get comfortable in your seat for too long at one of these awards shows? And can you imagine how many acceptance speeches she's had to write over the past month? The poor thing.
[Thanks, Fintan!]

Yeah, the WGA wants to work its way into the game industry. But history shows that unions aren't empowered by union leaders or even the members. They're empowered by companies who take advantage of their workers. Some unions have over-bureaucratized their usefulness, but the WGA recently fought for their members' royalties for DVD and online sales, but no more than the royalties they were already getting for screenings. Seems reasonable to me.
Last year I paid my $75 dollars to enter a game into the WGA awards. (That's $25 cheaper than the IGF.) Mine was the only small indie game ever to be nominated for the award.
'Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!' Don't let the silly name fool you. It's sitting on Metacritic with a solid 81 score, and from my own sales, it's most popular with college women.
Oh, and I let my 'membership' lapse last month. I've still got all my fingers and thumbs. Just a sec. There's a knock at the door...
