Maybe they should offer a job on the floor at a Doritos factory, instead.

I'm pretty sure there's more prestige in that, than there is in being a 'pro gamer'.

@Vcize

I agree with you. If I was making 100k+ a year just for sitting around and playing video games 12 hours a day I'd be all for it. A friend of mine from Texas is a pro gamer and during the summer he does non-stop tournaments with teams he plays with on Xbox Live and usually makes a big enough killing where he doesn't have to work most of the year.

I think for this to even begin to work, MLG and professional gaming in general has to be more widely known. If pro gaming was to become even a slightly legitamate way for gamers to earn money, then maybe this would have some impact, but at the state pro-gamin is in now, I see no reason why the "pros" at this tournament can expect to make a living off of Halo.

Halo 3 tournaments have a nice cash prize. $25,000 for first place. and $100,000 at the Championship event. The pro teams are sponsored, which means they are paid too play. Look at Tsquared, is he the typical gamer stereo type? No and he makes a lot of money doing what he does.

the fact that it costs money and is at a physical location (so "pro" gamers can judge your posture?) makes any and all participants idiots (except maybe the "pro" gamers, who are probably getting paid)

Why do you people sound so jealous? Hey if people are good at a game and want to make money doing it, more power to them. Just don't make fun of people that feel that gaming is more than a hobby to them and decide to take it to the next level.

A kid getting paid to skateboard all day is no different than a kid being paid to play videogames or poker all day. Or hell, even a professional basketball player. No game has an important impact on society.

There is a very small group of MLG pro-gamers and it takes a ridiculous amount of skill to be in that group just like any other competitive event.

Why are you guys so anti this? What is really so god damn wronged with it? People get paid to be good at rubik's cubes. Do you instantly go OMG SO F'IN WEAK... just because you are one of those people who has a normal day job?

Do you think back in the day when sports were in their early prime... that perhaps, people thought it ridiculous to earn money to play the game?

I'm not trying to say video games is a sport, but I am saying that the competitive spirit that exists is no different than anything else we compete in (chess, golf, bowling, magic the gathering, rock paper scissors, etc). To mock and stomp all over something like this must mean you hate video games.

No pro gamer at MLG makes a living playing video games. It is not a realistic profession at this time due the dame reason that it has never been a realistic profession. The money is not there.

Few pro gamers (like one or two dozen in the entire world) can net more than $10k in a year.  And that is after they spend thousands of hours gaming per year.

When you look at the number of hours these guys practice and play, and look a their winnings, they make less than minimum wage.  And I am talking about the MLG standouts. Those that don't place in the money make less than $0.25 an hour.

I know a few WoW farms that pay better than that.

I applaud people for competing in competative activities. But even as MLG has been around for this long, as it has driven other gaming leagues out of business, and in an age of internet connectivity, mature gaming platforms with high household adoption rates, platforms that have the most popular FpS games on the market, with MLG's Fortune 500 sponsors, with buy-in from ESPN...with all that...

gamers can not make a living playing video games at MLG.

Saying otherwise misleads thousands and thousands of teenagers.  Many teenagers are misguided in thinking they can make a living playing Halo 3 or GoW or MW2 at MLG.

MLG as a company has swagger and is an attractive marketing venue for some companies.

But It is up to MLG to land even major sponsors in order to offer even more prize money.   Is up to MLG gamers to have personalities that are marketable. And while you (assuming you knownwhat MLG is) may be able to name a few MLG personalities yhat have even appeared on network TV or a Coke can, know that MLG controls to a large extend how an MLG gamer can make money on his own.

I am not knocking MLG. Brand control is important.  I really like what they are doing.

However, no gamer can make a living playing video games at MLG.  The money is not there yet.

The window of opportunity is small for someone good at a game like Halo 3. Games change. Platforms change. Controllers game. Among other variables.

Do what you love. Make fun doing it. Be the best at it. But don't misguide people into thinking it is a legit career field.

It is a competative activity that requires huge time investments.  And it is decades behind cult activities like Bowling, Disc Golf, and BBQ cookoffs.

The Halo 3 pro team Believe the Hype won $100,000 at the Championship. Do ATLEAST a little research before you start talking like you know something. Thats $25,000 each. Not to mention sponsors. Look up Tsquared, he makes more money then most people on here.

You are right on one thing though. Not many people can make a living doing this but MLG is trying to make Professional gaming more known. Give it time.

Do some research. There are several players in MLG alone that make over 100k a year off of the contracts they have signed with MLG. Then add in their sponsorship money and you can see how the numbers go up. The lower-seeded, lesser known pro teams still make more than 10k a year off of their contracts.
The money is there. The prize money is not enough to make a living off of but that's not what any of them do. It's just a nice bonus if they do win.

You all are naive, I bet 90% of you are fatter than the average pro gamer and am gamers. For the people talking about the money aspect, the highest paying team signed a contract with sponsors for $250,000, that's not regarding money from winning events and lessons. Your right getting paid doing something that is a hobby and traveling is the stupidest thing in the whole world. Way to bring out cliche comments and be a bunch sheep.

There is no such thing as Console Wars yet you guys go all ape-shit when an MSFT exec talks bad about Sony. If a blatant flamebait article comes out talking about how Alan Wake looks better then Heavy Rain you guys become ravaging fanboys.

To do what these guys do takes a lot of skill and coordination and the only reason why you tlak down to it is because you can't do it yourself. Of course I know the obvious comebacks to this so don't even bother. BTW to the dude who said that MLG players look like upside down doritos, obviously has self esteem issues.

I never mentioned console wars and I never went apeshit. You hit the wrong reply button?
And I'm sure playing video games at an professional level takes a lot of coordination, but getting paid to play games competitively is a joke. Sure it may get you money, it may get you the adoration of 12 year olds around the world, but when your relatives or a girl at the bar asks what you do, are you going to say "play video games professionally"?
Next time you hit the reply button, calm down and don't blatantly insult one person for the faults of a whole bunch of other people. I'm not a fanboy, I think Heavy Rain is cool, I accept the fact that FF13 looks better on the PS3 than the 360. I could care less about the console war as long as I keep getting good games on my system.

"No pro gamer at MLG makes a living playing video games."

This one statement instantly proved that you have no idea what you are talking about Mr. Atkins.

"Few pro gamers (like one or two dozen in the entire world) can net more than $10k in a year"

Interesting statistic you pulled out of your ass, as I have nearly a dozen players on my team alone that make double that amount in salary, let alone the prize money they earn on top of the salary.

It is obvious that you are absolutely clueless about pro gaming and to the money the top console and PC players are making around the world, so you should stop trying to sound smarter than you are in an area where you lack any knowledge whatsoever.

wow, I never realized how stupid society is. So every nerd is fat? or every kid who plays video games is fat? Yea, don't get me wrong, some ARE, but there are football players that weigh like 300+ and are just linemen with some strenght but mostly fat. And what about the people who invent the technology you're using right now? Would you go punch them in the face and call them a nerd for making something you use every single day and depend on? LOL, I bet half or more of competitive gamers are athletic. For example, I played soccer and ran track all my life. I can run a mile under 5 mins, and my soccer team got 2nd in state this year. So, I guess since i'm good at video games i'm unathletic, WRONG. Stupid hardasses just because you work at McDonald's and can't make money playing video games or go to college doesn't mean you talk bad about others. Go cry in a corner. (BTW Medical School > McDonalds)

So according to the majority of opinions here on the general thought of "gamers", I am now an old, morbidly obese male who lives in his mother's basement. Thanks, I didn't know I can undergo a sex change and weight change that quickly. One true observation though: I don't really get any women.

And not everyone attempts to make a living out of MLG. Majority of players are on a college track, which means they have direction in life and obviously their playing days aren't going to last forever. Everyone knows this.

FYI, to the guy who mentioned "I'm MLG", you clearly do not know what you're saying and I would bet you all the money in the world that no MLG player has ever said such a statement. Why? You just said "I am Major League Gaming". Do people say "I'm NFL" or "I'm MLB"? Think, moron, think.
