New 2D Worms game squirming its way to Steam
39
A recent tweet from Team 17's Martyn Brown has revealed that everyone's favorite combative invertebrates will soon star in a new 2D outing on Steam, titled Worms Reloaded. That's literally all we know about the game at the moment, though Brown's tweet promises more details soon. Until then, we're left to worry that it's going to be an all-annelid remake of The Matrix: Reloaded, which would be totally awesome, until, of course, the big rave/orgy scene.

It was all actually a second layer to the Matrix!
That said, I love me some Worms.

I agree with scott 100%. Nothing, NOTHING new has been created by team 17, since their old amiga days. I still wonder how they ´ve been able to survive all this time with nothing but worms, they should have an andy davidson statue right outside of team 17 headquarters because without his creation there´ll be no team 17 right now. Well, the last time they tried to create something new it was that awful larry game, so i guess they are right after all, just be a one trick horse....

Do Team 17 know how to make anything other than Worms games? It seems like they churn out at least one of these games per year, despite really not overhauling the Worms "formula" at all in the past 10+ years.

My point isn't that they should change it - my point is that if you're NOT going to substantially alter the formula at all, then stop releasing the same game over and over again, with a different name.

I don't know why Scott's comment is being greeted with such negativity. He's right, Worms needs a refresh before it needs a new version. There's been a few new weapons here and there, and I actually enjoyed 3D for the most part, and Mayhem was brilliant (Forts was decent at best).
It's like Bomberman though. They keep pumping out 'new' versions that aren't new at all, in fact most of the time they are missing features of earlier editions and will be quickly forgotten in a year. There's always going to be the classics in a series that people remember forever, and in the case of Bomberman (Saturn, Online) and Worms (Armageddon) it's looking like they'll never be able to top themselves.

Sonic changed its formula and that worked out great.

@ Doctor ORPHEUS! - Sonic is one of gaming's biggest sob-stories when it comes to changing things up, as is Tomb Raider when it comes to not changing anything at all. We all know it didn't work for them, but it has worked for plenty of others so why limit your example to the absolute worst case?
And at any rate, most of my complaint isn't so much that they don't add new to the series, its that they keep taking stuff away. We're getting the bare-bones minimum to meet the requirements of a 'Worms' or 'Bomberman' title, we're not getting all the great features that earned the best games in those series their status. Worms and Worms 2 on XBLA and PSN are bare-bones, by the books versions (as are Bomberman LIVE, Ultra, and Blast). They could do much better, because they've done so in the past.

What Team 17 did was make Worms Armageddon and World Party, then they tried 3D, and although it took off in their hometown, it didn't sell much like the 2D ones... So they went back to 2D, and put the focus on consoles and handhelds. Then, they took WA and WWP, cut off 3/4 of the content, and released it as... Whatever the hell the crappy PSP and DS versions were called. Then, they tried refreshing it with that terrible Wii title, which might have actually been fun if they didn't kill it with terribad controls. Now, since they axed so much of the content from the last 2D PC titles for their re-entry into the console and handheld markets, they are in a position to simply "put back" some of that content in each release. So now, "Worms 2: Armageddon" looks much more fully featured than the first Worms release on XBLA and PSN, despite the fact that it's still less featured than the classic Worms Armageddon.
I think they should just re-release WA and WWP as one game with all content integrated, keep the server support as well as support for matchmaking and user made dedicated servers for when WormNET eventually stops supporting it, and start releasing games with new ideas instead of simply puttin back some of the content they took out a while ago.
Having said all this, I will be buying this new one regardless, completely un-supporting what I just said, only because the Steam support will mean my friends will actually play it..

Awesome, i own both the Xbox versions, i hope the PC version has more content though, you'd think in the past 15 years or whatever the game would have added a bit more content.

I agree. Make the "worms", backgrounds and certain sequences in 3D a la SFIV.

I wonder if they'll take it to the 2.5D route, or keep it as straight up 2D.
I honestly hope they try out 2.5D.

Love Worms myself, have for ages. Team 17 actually posted about this on their Facebook about a week ago, offering people to sign up for the beta of the game. I did it myself, hope I got in. :)

I just hope it's not as watered down as the console games. One thing that I've missed bigtime since the older PC games is an actual campaign, not just a string of stupid challenges. Remember the campaign in Armageddon? The real Armageddon, not the XBLA one? Each mission was different, and it was fun because of that. You had to collect a crate one mission, take out worm snipers the next, or survive an instant death mission. They mixed it up! Now, it seems like every Worms campaign is just "Challenge 1:kill all teams. Challenge 2: kill slightly tougher teams. Challenge 3.."
I'll be buying this regardless, since it will be a way to finally play Worms with my friends. They don't play a lot of console stuff, or anything that I like actually.
Like Gunbound.

Jesus. How about, instead of craping 20 watered down versions, they finally release a DECENT worms game?
Compared to Worms Armageddon/Worms World Party, all the games in the series were a step backwards. And the original Worms for the XBL/PSN was just hilariously bad.
How can you go from 65 weapons (WA) to half that, dumb down the level editor, make a robust online system completely crap, make the options even less customizable and still call it progress?
Just look at that chart:

Finally! I remember playing Worms on the PC all the time with my cousins like 10 years ago. Can't believe it's taken this long for them to release a new 2D version on the PC.
