Nintendo Australia: Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M out this summer

IGN reports that Nintendo of Australia released some big news about two upcoming Wii titles at its media summit. Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released between June and August. Other M was previously named as a summer release by Nintendo of Japan, but Galaxy has only ever been specified as "2010."

Those dates are presumably for Australia, but at least set a rough time frame for the rest of the world. We'll find out more tomorrow during Nintendo's US media summit.

Nintendo Australia also dated the black Wii console (March 11) and the DSi XL (April 15, in burgundy and bronze).

Where's the hype for SMG2?

I remember how much they hyped up the first, but it seems like there's ZERO coverage for SMG2.

The buzz for SMG2 will likely skyrocket when the release draws near. That's what happens sometimes with high-caliber Nintendo games.

It doesn't need hype, it's a Mario game.

It will sell well regardless of anything.

It will sell twice as much as the original, and nintendo knows and doesn't give a rats ass about hype.

Probably the same thing that happened to NSMBW and Spirit Tracks will happen here. People will act like it's some horrible abomination of a game and write it off (SMG2 is already "just an expansion pack", according to some morons), then about 4-6 weeks before it comes out, hype will kick in and people will go hands on with it, say how great it is and it ends up selling 10 million copies or something.

Nintendo has been busy in the Mario Hype Department with New Super Mario Brothers Wii as of late. Galaxy 2 will start getting some hype once they're done beating that horse to death.

That aside, if Metroid Other M hasn't sold me yet (which it just about has), I think Galaxy 2 is going to be one of the Nintendo titles this year that could get me to buy a Wii, they seem to have really put a lot of work into tightening up the controls, and loosening up Mario's basic movement. Returning to Mario's roots in terms of gameplay in similarity to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World makes me VERY HAPPY.

It's going to be a glorious couple of days. 2010 shall be the ultimate.

Ugh, it's like Nintendo wanted to have that classic "station wagon" feel for the DSi XL. Maybe some wood paneling would be in order too.

Wow, great news. I was pretty sure at least one of these would more likely be a november/december release, but it's awesome to finally be getting some great games in the summer. It doesn't happen often enough.

I've never needed to take the plunge but if any game could make me do it, it would be other M. It has the potential to be amazing. Black Wii also helps sweeten the deal.

After Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, and my already huge backlog of games, I think Mario and Metroid can wait a month or two.

My backlog of game doesn't feel like shrinking any time soon I guess. Also ZELDA 2010!!!!! hopefully!

No mention from Nintendo on Zelda, and no black console for the US. I'll pretend we got no news at all thanks. My brand loyalty has signed a "do not resuscitate" clause, and I intend to honor it.

Thankfully, I've only ever been a Nintendo fan, never a loyalist. Makes it a lot easier to take the bad with the good, huh.

And Zelda won't be announced there. They've said numerous times Zelda will be making it's appearance at E3.

So it will either be a very empty and bleak Nintendo winter, or the very best of Nintendo Winters. Here's hoping for the later. I'm surprised they are putting both of these out so close together, and in the summer no less. Hopefully they have more up their sleeve.

I nearly made that assumption too, but decided to verify the article.

Anything regarding Other M peaks my interest. Metroid is one of the only series in which I don't care how long it takes to come out if quality is ensured. But the sooner the better!

Wow! If you factor in the usual delay in getting games over to the land down under, this means that the US will be getting those games in spring 2009!

That's really a thing of the past now. 95 per cent of games have a release date here that is within two days of the US release date.

I am looking forward to Other M and am quite pleased with the possibility of a summer release here in the US.

Not only is that great news, but it also adds weight to those Zelda in November rumors.
I also want a Sin & Punishment 2 date at tomorrow's US conference.

Amen to that. Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games I've ever played (and I've played a lot during my 29 years on this Earth).

The is absolutely zero chance that SMG2 will come out in the US in anything other than the 4th quarter. Metroid? Add 18 months to that release date.

I'm late to the game (was stuck in an internet dead land this week and didn't see the conference - damn!) but Nintendo are making a kick ass summer. I was planning to get the Metroid Trilogy to cover the summer. Now I don't know if I could manage that.
