There is nothing wrong at all in being happy pressing buttons on a controller. You are not alone.

It's funny that you mention Tiger Woods because the motion controls on that are awesome, but I HATE the game itself. All those EA Sports games are just too confusing for me with all the options and careers and unlocks and everything. It's funny since the whole point of the Wii is to bring non-gamers into the fold and if I've been gaming for almost 30 years and I can't figure out how to play a simple 4 hole round of golf on the course of my choosing, with the character of my choosing, how is my father (or grandfather, for that matter) supposed to figure it out?

So its going to be like the Xbox 360 v PS3 launch over again but in reverse

With the Xbox having the more powerful (probably I havent checked up) product but with a different/unfamiliar developing process whereas the PS3 has the easier to product to programme for which means more games can be available out of the gate. I wonder how it will pan out

Wow, I never realized it until now, but this is kind of like the launch. Only by "the launch," I mean "imagining that they were launched at the same time." But yeah, one is stronger but the other is easy to program for... it's like role reversal, eh?!

;D

You kind of have that backwards. Sort of. The 360 has a more powerful GPU and more general purpose processing power, and effectively more memory. The PS3 has more raw FP power.

The biggest difference is that the 360 (like the xbox before it) is very easy to develop for. It's like developing for a PC, except with only one hardware spec to worry about and streamlined libraries. The PS3 is a nightmare to develop for. The tools suck, the libraries are not as familiar, the support is terrible, and the system is very difficult to get performance out of.

Except that Microsoft has already mentioned that the Natal add-on will take up 10-15% of the CPU.

Sony's Motion Controller, on the other hand, has had a live demo at the Tokyo Game Show where a lady griefed her controller-using partner onstage:

They also had a live demonstration of the PSMC's use in Resident Evil 5: (starts at the 2:50 mark)

I don't really like motion controls so I won't be buying either. I prefer a good old fashion controller in my hands.

I know the feeling Ben, but this generation especially it's a must to have all systems or risk missing out on something spectacular.

Don't worry, you can still be a little bias or favor one more than the other. You just have the luxury of not being an ass (aka rabid fanboy) :)

Congratulations on your PS3 purchase.

I wouldn't mind some Killzone 3 or Resistance 3 with Metroid Prime control goodness as an alternate option....

*Still keep the default controls in case it sucks*

So... shovelware in HD?

Bad jokes aside, there is something about this that worries me. In the RE5 demo, the guy playing was holding a dualshock controller on its other hand instead of a Nunchuck-like controller. I tried it, and it feels horribly wrong. I'm surprised that it seems like no one has pointed out this yet around here.

He's right, but that could end up hurting as much as helping. If they're just porting games over from normal PS3/360 control schemes, or porting the games from the Wii, what's the point in buying PMC? Or more importantly, what would be the point in buying PS3 for the PMC?

A respectable software base is always helpful, but if they have to get that at the expense of compelling, original experiences, it could be quite disastrous. Natal has the opposite problem. No-one knows what the hell to do with it, but that opens the door for more crazy, outside-the-box stuff that could really sell the thing.

I still stand by what I said. I'm not questioning the direction Sony is taking. Whether it turns out to be true or not isn't really relevant. The man is in PR, it's his job to talk up everything his employer is doing. They're all about manipulating the message to their best advantage and they don't deserve even half the coverage they get.

I think the DS has proven that. Every time I go to get a new game for that thing I stand dumbfounded in front of a wall of hundreds and hundreds of terrible looking games for like 20 minutes, only to eventually pick up some first-party non-canon offshoot of a franchise that I've been playing for 20 years.

Well, If you don't like RPG's, 3rd Parties don't have much to ofter on the DS.

But if that's not the case, your comment makes no sense to me.

It's not like there's an overwhelming amount of decent original RPGs on the DS either. If I wanted to play a 15 year old Final Fantasy game, I've got a PS1 in a box somewhere.

Ben,

You want some real multiplayer goodness and addictive gameplay? Pick up this little game we like to call MAG! You won't regret it. Oh, and Heavy Rain is out today. Valkyria Chronicles and Killzone 2 are also must have PS3 exclusives. But, if what you want is a better multiplayer experience you need to look no further than MAG. Trust me ...

If you want to add me on PSN my network ID is: johnnynumber5

Congrats and I'll see you online!

I don't think i'd mind it if they added motion control support to pre-existing games. be kinda fun to go back to stuff that's just sitting on my shelf and give it a play through -- or maybe the PSOne downloads?

::shrugs:: it's a better product than HOME

If sony and MS take this rout, that will be the downfall of motion controllers.

From a computer vision point of view, I think that estimating pose from the Sony system is much more robust and easier to compute than the Microsoft system. Sony's camera must find the glowing orb while Natal must first segment people from the background (using the IR camera) and then locate and track your limbs based on template matching to known a reference model. Natal was designed to be computationally efficient, but IMHO it seems much more ambitious than tracking a known feature in the scene (the orb).

For this reason, I see more games supporting the Sony system in the first 6 months after release.

"God save me if i get a Wii."

God has forsaken me!!!! I wear this cross around my neck for nothing, for He allowed me to buy a Wii on launch day and almost 4 years later I still play it!!!! Even after recently buying a 360, I still enjoy my Wii more!!!!

Why Lord, why oh why did you not save me like Ben!!!! I bought MW2 like he did, so why oh why did you not deem it right to destroy that enjoyable box known as a Wii?!?!

Why Lord, why did you curse me with a console I enjoy?!?!? WHY?!?!!?!?

Good that you enjoy your PS3 Ben. :)

I predict that Sony's motion controls and Microsoft's motion controls will suck as bad as the wii's motion controls, and hardcore gamers will all be irritated at how every new game has "waggle-tech"(tm) that you HAVE to use.

@ Ben:
Might want to consider adding Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, and Yakuza 3 to the list. $20 for a new copy of Valkyria Chronicles is all sorts of win and the game really deserves some love.

I would like Sony's motion controller to fail because they have been such hypocrites dissing the whole idea of it and now they are drooling at the thought of implementing it.

I'm rooting more for Natal here, i'm interested in what kind of experiences it would be giving us access to.

Then again why do I even care, i don't own any console!

The question is why would anyone want 3rd party Wii games ported to their system? This Sony guy needs to take a look at Metacritic and NPD charts.

The fact that developers might have to make new games for Natal is not a bad thing.

lol, ever since i bought a wii, i have always been of the mind that motion control is a fad. I still believe that everyone will rush out and purchase natal or project ps3 motion, and they will sit unused after the first couple of hours play for the rest of the console's life.

I do look forward to be proven wrong, but my wii has probably been used a maximum of five times in the last year and that was by my kids. And personally i feel that the wii motion control is better designed than either the ps3 or xbox motion as it does not rely on line of sight from the camera, which will for the ps3 motion control, and possibly natal, be the major downfall.

I do hope they find some really innovative way for using both, but i will not be jumping on the band wagon as soon as either is released until such time as i am convinced that motion control is here to stay and is a better way of playing our games and has a future, rather than just being a passing fad.
