It's rare that we'll post about a work-in-progress iPhone project being developed by a single person -- however, it's also rare that we'll be as intrigued by an iPhone game as we are by Mimeo and the Kleptopus King. The game, which is being crafted by indie developer Shawn Inman, is a puzzle-platformer with a brilliant gameplay mechanic -- by collecting cartridges, you change the game's visuals between 2-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit and 16-bit graphics, each of which have a different effect on your enemies and the terrain you're attempting to navigate.
Click past the jump to see a video demo of Mimeo in action. The current launch window for the title is holiday 2010, which is a ways off -- but we're willing to give Inman as much time as he needs, seeing as how he has to develop four games in one.

it would be sick if he also added a 64 bit and make it 3d.

You name is "Sony Boy" and you only know of the 32x as a 32 bit console?

Don't make me sik Picard on you again!
I've always felt sorry for kids born in the mid ninties who missed out on 8-bit, 16-bit and 32/64-bit consoles. I'm a hardcore gamer and will always remember the Nintendo 64 as the greatest console of all time, hence my absolute joy at the Virtual Console (and absolute disgust at Nintendo leaving the VC to die recently in favor of WiiWare). I've been so so close to re-purchasing a Nintendo 64 and hooking into the dozens of games i loved in High School. The VC offerings for Nintendo 64 games are severely lacking, tho i will say Mario Kart 64 is played at LEAST weekly.

This is pretty genius. I love that the button scheme is visible in the background.

Awesome design, but I can't get excited about a platformer on the iPhone/iPodTouch. Buttons are our friends. Let's not abandon them.

That's awesome, but I want to feel the button when I jump. Touching a flat surface makes it feel incomplete.

Finally a game that looks like it controls well, because instead of using the same virtual d-pad/buttons as the rest, it uses controls that make sense on the iphone.

Game Boy is an 8-bit system, though. Yes, it had a monochrome screen... but that had nothing to do with its processing power. Which is why this "bit" naming scheme fails.
360 and PS3 have 64-bit CPUs. Wii has a 32-bit CPU (as did GCN/PS2/Xbox). The "bit" thing stopped being relevant with the N64, pretty much.

Lol. I still remember being SUCH a N64 fanboy when i was younger that i would hang around the games section at Big W (i think you US people call it Wal-Mart) just to intercept game-buying parents and use my above-average communication and selling skills to talk parents into buying a Nintendo 64, even being able to quote gaming jargon and technical references hahaha. I was so articulate, one day i convinced a woman to buy over $400 of gaming console and games, and i didn't even work there. I figured if i was going to be a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, i might as well go out and do it properly :P

Foetoid,
I still do that at Target sometimes but only when I'm there for myself and some mom is hopelessly trying to pick out games for her kids. I'm pretty sure I've saved three Christmases, several birthdays and at least one night of Hanukah.

Where were you when my Grandma bought me Primal Rage for Christmas when I asked for a SNES controller?
- that same year I read in gamepro (I think) that a kid had the same thing happen to him. Ask for a controller - get Primal Rage. Eh.

Holy shit...that is such an awesome video game idea! Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?
Moreover WHY does this have to be an iPhone game?! I mean I'll definitely check it out, but I really really wish I could play this on a DS or on XBLA/PSN.

Ok .... the video didn't made much sense .... i don't know if it was because my pc don't have sound ... but what gameplay wise changed when he "evolved" each time ?

Different "resolutions" (or whatever) will reveal different platforms, so some puzzles can only be solved by evolving and devolving between them.

YAY!! They posted an article on my recommendation!! I was pretty impressed by the gameplay, it's a neat concept. Once you evolve, the graphics AND sound change. He has a 2-bit, 4-bit- 8-bit and 16-bit soundtrack on his website

Not to be a knowitall prick, but everything that's been released since the days of Atari 2600 has been 8-bit. Even most calculators use 8d-bit. There's only really been at best a 4-bit processor. And on top of that, there's never been an actual 2-bit processor. It's a nice way of distinction between the different 'eras' but not factually correct.
