According to the L.A. Times, Missile Command has joined the growing list of old games you probably don't care about that are being shopped in Hollywood as cinematic properties. Following in the footsteps of Joust and Asteroids!, the retro classic is being pitched to several studios by Atari, with Fox reportedly heading up the pack.
We wish we could meet the evil genius who's going around and telling movie studios that the best investments they can make are in the film rights of astoundingly old video games. "No, no, think of it, 'Burgertime: The Movie' You put Kevin James in a chef's hat, cast Jamie Kennedy as a fried egg, you're banking a $50 million three-day opening easy."
[Thanks Ben]

I just now read the Joust and Asteroids movie articles.
WTF??????????????????
Is hollywood frigging desperate?? What the heck is going on? I think producers are on some sort of new crack, and then they wonder why bloody chick flicks are doing so well....urm, thats because chick flicks are crap, but are far more interesting to watch (only if you're with your girlfriend, if not, then you need to go see a councillor and start questioning your sexuality :D )

No so much Hollywood desperation, but more Atari desperation. Still, that Tetris trailer looked interesting. So perhaps with the right director and talent...
Of course I already know how the plot ends.

Any film studio who actually 'invests' in these licenses deserves the failure that is likely to result. If they are capable of creating good films out of these concepts, they should have no need to scrape the barrel for content-less IP in the first place.
What a waste of time and resources.

Missile Command as a movie could actually be pretty good. There's a good story there just waiting to get written. Some of these other games (like Burgertime) are too abstract to make a game out of them.

1: SIR, WE'VE GOT A PROBLEM!
2: You mean the fact that we've constructed the world's 3 most important cities no more than 200 yards apart from one another?
1. Uhhh... that too.

I actually don't think this movie would be half-bad, maybe not half-good, but not half-bad...
Not that movie adaptations of games have that good a history, or vice-versa...
As for Kevin James in Burger Time, I would absolutely watch that, not kidding! You could also put Ralphie May on acid and star him in Pac-Man.

If it was about the programmer who started to have nightmares about cities being destroyed while he was working on the game, I might be interested. That'd make a nice Lynch-ish psychological thriller.
But more likely it'll be "can Steven Seagal punch a missile so hard, it gets reflected back to Jupiter and blows up the evil Gas Aliens?"
...wait, that could be pretty good too.

After seeing ads for Hot Tub Time Machine, I don't think there's any movie that Hollywood wouldn't make.

Come on, they did this movie back in (1983)? It was called War Games and it was awesome...

My feelings exactly. What is with these people? They realized they can't make good movies based on games with an actual plot so they're going for games with neither plot nor characters? WTF?! How the hell do you make that a movie? "This summer, one crosshair will be tested... a collection of indescriminate blobs we call cities will fall... and stuff WILL EXPLODE. Missle Command, opens everywhere on IMAX 3D June 23rd, 2012. Don't miss this..." (and then a flashing dot leading a red trail of pixels will fall onto the words on screen, causing them to explode).
Although, since "Asteroids" is also in the works, who knows what classic pre-8 bit games could be next? Defender? Space Invaders? Robotron? Dare I say it... PONG?! Ah, I remember the first time I played Pong, my emotional connection with the left paddle, my utter hatred of the right paddle... my sympathy pulled back and forth on the little 4 pixel dot that simulated the ball... Such gripping writing, such a truly necessary movie to make, just like Missle Command.

Don't forget Universal's big 2012 movie is "Battleship" in which... "a multi-nation group of battleships must fend off an alien invasion" Seriously.
Also, isn't this fall's Smurfs movie about 28 years too late to the party?
Now a Ouija board movie, that could work, and I'm sure it's in the pipeline.
