- GamePro (5/5): "Put simply, Heavy Rain is a gaming experience that took huge risks in design, narrative, and game mechanics, and executed on its ideas to masterful effect. You will care, in the end, about the decisions you made to shape the fates of your characters, and wonder long after it's over if you made the right choices."
- 1UP (A-): "Though shorter than other epic, multi-disc titles, there's more than enough content in Heavy Rain to warrant a purchase. At the end of my first playthrough I was left utterly satisfied with the conclusion of the story and wanting more titles of this caliber."
- Eurogamer (9/10): "A thrilling mystery, cleverly composed, and unlike anything else you will play this year. It may also be the only game you play this year where pulling the trigger makes you really feel something, and I can think of no greater compliment."
- Giant Bomb (4/5): "Interactive storytelling might not yet be able to evoke the same degree of raw human emotion as more traditional art forms, but this is a big step in the right direction."

Quantic Dream's serial-killer-suspense-meets-family-drama adventure title, Heavy Rain, received the official Joystiq Seal of Approval™, but how did our peers in the world of gaming journalism feel about the title? Let's see what some other critics had to say about the interactive romp through rainy Frenchadelphia:

but with GTA it was a stronger backlash, because just about everyone said it was the best, and then just about everyone said it was awful. How many people said Batman Arkham Asylum, or AC2 or UC2 were the worst games they played all year months after beating them?

I am hoping the girlfriend feels the same way when Alan Wake comes out.
I think Heavy Rain would be a cool game and I would love to watch someone play it.
I loved watching my older bro play Resident Evil and I loved the high Myst games we had in college.

I thought these metareviews were supposed to take the some of the highest and some of the lowest scores to give you an even split of views on the game. DId you guys just like Heavy Rain too much to include the Destructoid or Edge Magazine reviews?

Destructoid was the only review I read that had the balls to call out the games mistakes. Just because a review isn't afraid to say something negative about a game doesn't make it a bad review. The final word in the review was that despite its flaws Heavy Rain was a good game, so what's so lame about it? Honestly I thought it was refreshing to see a review that gave an honest look at the games strengths and flaws instead of just building on the hype machine.

Edge reviews are usually pretty fair, and a 7 from them is almost like an 8.5-9 anywhere else.
The Destructoid review, however.. based on what I read.. I'm not sure why anyone would take it seriously. You may as well lump them in with such stand-up sites as 'Teletext Game Central', and 'Big Pond Game Arena', with their 4/10 and 4.5/10 respectively.

the lowest-rating reviews all did the same thing. The second half of their reviews treated it more like a movie than a game, hence the bad scores. Which is the thing. If Heavy Rain were a movie, it would be utter shit. But it's a video game, and most video games are complete shit on the same scale. Therefore, Heavy Rain is better than most games, but makes for an absolutely terrible movie.

why? Because you're too much of a fanboy to acknowledge a games flaws, so the reviewer must be an incompetent madman?

Did you actually read the whole review? Every point he brought up in that review is more than valid. You can disagree, or think it's not big enough of an issue to take away from the overall value of the game, but they are all valid complaints. Which is why I think it should be in the metareview, to make the article more balanced with opinions instead of just taking every review that blatantly ignored the games flaws.
Why shouldn't he compare the game to a movie? Every piece of media about the game advertises it as a movie. Did you see the promo where they had a bunch of people from the movie industry talk about how far they would go for someone they love? And he echoed what you said in his review, that while it's not good for a movie it's still a very good game. Why is that so bad?

Generally when I'm interested in a game already, I gravitate towards reading the generally lower scoring reviews just to get a better taste of what people dislike about them. I don't find much value in really reading a review that has a score of 9 or 10. I still wanted to get Heavy Rain right away after reading and liking the dtoid review, but as I've said before the demo thoroughly turned me off.
I still want to get it at some point, but now it'll be not *as* rewarding since a few jerks in this thread ruined the ending.

aww Ezio you pissed because Destructoid gave Assassins Creed 2 a 4.5?
i really hate how so much of the gaming community is OBSESSED with review scores. Even more so when a good game gets one or two low scores.
Destructoid is a great site and probably the best site when it comes to being part of a community. I don't see any other sites giving their community front page recognition, or writing great editorials as Dtoid does. So Ezio stop taking reviews scores to heart and try reading a review before you scroll down a page to look at a number. It'll save you from looking like a moron.

Whats wrong with gamecentral? They have been doing good reviews for one hell of a long time, was reading them on teletext even back when they were "digitiser" and i was in secondary school then so must be about 10-15 years ago now.
They tend to be a lot harser on games than other places i agree but thats kinda good in the era of ign and its ilk handing out the 9/10 to anything with an advertising budget.
Games reviews are currently broken in general, the average review score (its edging towards 8 now i think) should tell you that. Reviewers that actaully point out faults in games should be appladed.

Haven't you learned by now? It is 'cool' to over-hype exclusive PS3 games. If you find flaws in an exclusive PS3 game, you are down-voted, ostracized, and basically kicked in the b@lls. PS3 fanboys, and gaming media sites like joystiq, are the Apple fanboys, and Engaget, of the gaming World.
Now this isn't to say Heavy Rain isn't a very cool game, it is.....but 5/5 ? No. 95+/100 ? No. Unfortunately, if you try to make an un-biased review, you will get hit hard by the PS3 loyal. LBP or UC2 anyone ? Over-hyped. iPad ? Over-hyped.

So Mass Effect did not sell well either? Or maybe that BioShock game tooo o
OR even maybe that new IP Borderlands!
It probably doesn't appeal to many people since it's not guns and action.

I haven't bought it yet, because im too concerned about the six axis controls. Ive only ever used it to place demo charges in KZ2, can anyone who has played it advise me? When it says shake down, do I keep it parallel to the ground and push it toward the ground or do i make the buttons face towards me and push down and/or pull towards me?

really? Cause there were two in just one fight of the demo, and no matter what i did i got beat up

I tried doing the fight without pressing anything at all and the result was almost exactly the same. I doubt they're use the sixaxis when your response is the difference between life and death for your character. I really wouldn't worry about it.
