I am heartened, because these seem to indicate that the game is more dynamic than just "2.5D or 1st person 3D."

Seems to have some top-down and proper 3rd person 3D, too.

And that looks very good, though it may just be the shiny coating everything seems to have.

To my understanding, it's 2.5D and then basically turns into... a lightgun shooter? I'm not really sure how it's gonna work with so few buttons.
I guess you could move with the d-pad and aim with the IR, but... I don't know. Something seems off.

That's why we need videos and hands-on impressions, and i've heard both are restricted until 9:00 tonight.

From the looks of the pics, Metroid: Other M reminds me of the art style of Shadow Complex, which I loved. I hope that this game can bring the Metroid series back to its side scrolling, Metroidvania roots!

Samfish - I'm sure that what they're going to do (so as to keep it from becoming Prime 4) is simply keep Samus stationary when she's in first person mode.

It would make sense.

"using a sideways Wii Remote"

Now more then ever I wish they'd DSi LLify the Wii Remote. I don't mind using the Wii Remote on its side, but if it were bigger (the d-pad and 1 + 2 buttons are tiny!), I'd be able to play with it a lot longer. And I know I won't want to put this game down.

Either that or finally make use of the Classic Controllers slots so I can use the accelerometers and pointer in conjunction with the CC.

Anwyays... Game looks BRILLIANT! These screens really showcase the perspective well. More Metroid-style games, especially in the Metroid series, is always a great thing.

i agree. me and my friends were playing Brawl the other night and were a GC controller short so i played with the Wii Remote sideways (since i was the only one that knew how to). i still did about as good as i usually do (won 2 out of the 5 matches we played =) ) but it was ridiculously uncomfortable. if it was a little bigger, it would be fine.

With a sideways wiimote being an emphasis, my main question is: will the first-person pointer control make use of MotionPlus? If so, I can only see myself playing this game in short stints, because using the wiimote sideways with the MP attachment is pretty uncomfortable :\

Pointer control doesn't need Motion Plus, because it's already precise. Only motion controls need Motion Plus. (Hint, name, etc.)

So in other words - no.

Yeah, I keep my WMP on the controller at all times because it's a pain to take off with the jacket, but I've recently noticed that it makes some games a little awkward the way you hold the remote because you're reaching for the lower buttons a little more than you should. But so far the only game I have that uses it is Wii sports resort, so I might as well take it off I guess.

You may come out ahead either way, depending on when you sold it. If you got upwards of $300 or so, you could still turn a profit of $100 in buying new.

Though if i were looking to buy new (and not utterly enslaved to the need to buy Galaxy 2 and Other M as quick as possible), i would wait and see when NoA's finally going to bring the black one over.

Quick and slightly related question, if I was to buy a Wii as I sold my other one during the "drought", would I be able to redownload all my wiiware/virtual console games, or were they tied to the system's code?

I think I unfortunately know the answer and that it's not like PSN, but I have hope...

Of course not. The only way to do that is to have the system break down, and Nintendo will transfer it over.

Tremendous disadvantages of not having a centralized system.

@ Orion: almost positive the are tied to the system you bought them on. i had to get my Wii repaired a long time ago and they told me i was SOL regarding Virtual Console games. but that was a while ago. maybe they changed it

since we are asking Wii questions i might as well throw this out there: nearly all my Virtual Console games quit working when i switched my Wii to component cables and an HDTV. they run but don't display anything. you can hear sound and see a faint image when you press the Home button but they are unplayable. anyone else have this?

There is a certain button combo you can press, kojo. I remember having that trouble getting Neo Geo games to run while in Progressive mode.

Could possibly be holding +, -, and 1. Or +, -, and 2, or something that incorporates more buttons, but it definitely has something to do with 1 and 2.

As much as I'd like this game to be successful, your average Wii owner will have no idea what the hell Metroid is, and there are probably a grip of real video game fans that have been put off by the Prime series and will be cautious.

Outlook not good.

I think that's why "Zero Suit Samus" is taking a more prevalent role in this one.

By not having her in her armor all the time, perhaps Samus is a heroine that female Wii gamers can relate to?

I mean seriously, LOOK at that hair.

Mmmmm Samus.....

The side-scrolling should help restore some of the arcadey appeal of the gameplay of the original, so it should help bring it to more Wii gamers who were turned off by the idea of an FPS, but who made NSMBWii into a 10 million seller in no time flat.

The problem is the more story and cinema driven nature of it. That could turn a lot of Wii owners off right quick.

Fact 1: Metroid Prime is the best game ever made
Fact 2: The Wii is a joke for hardcore games
Fact 3: Retro Studios could *totally* make a 360 game if they wanted

Summation: Where the f*** is my spiritual heir to Metroid Prime made by Retro Studios for the 360?

p.s. Okay, 1 or 2 of those facts *might* be opinions, but I'm not sure. Nah, they're probably facts. I feels 'em in my guts.

Think about what you said for a minute. Retro Studios could make a 360 game if they wanted to, but they could not make Metroid Prime on 360 if they wanted to.

Do you think Nintendo would let one of their IPs be played on the competition? They would sue the hell out of Retro Studios for such a thing.

You're aware that Retro Studios is wholly-owned by Nintendo, right? I've resolved not to fight over assertions like point 2 anymore, though i'll make my disagreement known.

Though i agree with point 1, wholly.

Retro is owned by Nintendo? Damn, how'd I miss that? I thought I heard something about them doing an EA Partners thing. Maybe that was new company started by former Retro guys?

@Admiral White
I definitely said "spiritual heir", numbnuts. Like Timesplitters 2 was a "spiritual heir" to Goldeneye (although, I'm hoping for something better than TS2, obviously).

Okay, I made a mistake. I confused spiritual heir for something else, my bad.

However, I am not majoring in aerospace engineering to have anyone call me a numbnuts. I take great offense to that.

Fact 4: Retro is a 2ND party Nintendo Studio. It would be hard enough for them to make a game on the 360, let alone basing it off of one of Nintendo's foundational franchises.

Hopefully they will better develop the atmosphere between now and then. That's one thing that all Metroid games have had, 2D or 3D. This is still looking more like Ninja Gaiden then Metroid, in terms of the atmosphere.
