Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pokewalker caught on video
58
If you're hoping to learn more about the device which you'll soon be hiding within your deepest, darkest pocket, filling you with terror that, while withdrawing your keys, you'll accidentally expose the accessory, bringing your reticent Pokémaniacal tendencies to light, forcing you to ... wait, what were we talking about again? Oh, yes, the Pokéwalker accessory which comes with HeartGold and SoulSilver was recently demoed in a video released at the Nintendo Media Summit, and posted above. Looks like it has some neat functionality beyond just step-counting.
Oh, the games themselves also received their own trailer, which is posted after the jump. We've seen most of the footage shown there before -- though the music is new, and totally triumphant.

That thing better not make noises while in my pocket. You think your cell phone going of in class is embarrassing.

ok, let me make sure I understand this:
This is a handheld (pocketheld?) console into which you insert game information from another handheld console and use that game info in basically the same way that you would with the handheld console from which the game data originated??

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. All you need to do is carry it around with you and kids will just come flocking to you to check our your pokemans.
OH, you mean a pedometer as in a WALKING TOO, not a pedo-meter. Sorry.

it also levels up your pkmn while you walk, which is neat.

will come a point of time that random pokemon duels would be a legit way of being excused in the middle of class.

I got the Pokemon Pikachu 2 back when Gold/Silver came out. Kept it locked on my right sock every day in school. Then one day Pikachu just started to hate me for no reason, the only time that happens is when you don't take care of him. Now, I can't find the damn handheld and I'm pretty sure Pikachu is still mad at me, or dead.

i think people shake these things instead of walking with them.

That would be very evil and SO MUCH CHEATING!
Shame on you for such a thought.
Wash your hands out with soap, for they sow only filthy thoughts.

I had one of those Pokémon Pikachu long ago (essentially, a Pikachu virtual pet). I have restless leg syndrome, so I would clip it to my shoe, and rack up the watts like crazy. Hahaha...

@Sketch: How so? This be important information to a... er... frequent walker, such as myself.

@Mostly Harmless: I'm not sure how it does it, it just does. If you can slow down your shaking to simulate the pace of walking, it works sometimes. But what works extremely well is having it on your wrist. The swinging motion of your arm makes the counter go up leaps and bounds.

I would wear that thing proudly.....
Imagine handling all negotiations with Pokemon duels....
"Well, I don't know, the I don't really agree with the terms of this contract...."
"My Level 99 Typhlosion thinks otherwise....."

The Pokéwalker is essentially the first generation of the games, put into a tiny little device to be a companion to your Gen IV game.
This is, of course, awesome.

Isn't the purpose of the DS to be portable?

But you can't play it while walking! You end it colliding with all varieties of things!

This is a way to convince kids to exercise, away from the TV, without them them knowing it. Glorified pedometer or not, that's fantastic. Of course the chubby child that I was, I would have done this with a mouth full of Gobstoppers and a King Size Butterfinger in one hand, Surge in the other.

this is a point that i think is the most important. when i was coming up, i know i would have been the fat kid had i not played sports. i would put on like 20 pounds in the summer playing video games and then drop it all during football camp. since i know alot of kids don't play sports, things like these are good to get them active for a little bit at least. it's certainly not the end all be all to child obesity but it's a step in the right direction.

I remember the same thing being said about Pokemon/pocket Pikachu years ago... I also remember the commercial for that toy showing kids sitting on top of washing machines to count steps. xD
Though I can see why. Mine always fell off when I clipped it somewhere. ):

Only original Pokemon Pikachus weren't bundled with the game.
If they bundled a color device the price would probably go way up.

I would very much like to believe that this will serve as a portal between pokemon heartgold and platinum so that I can get every pokemon in the pokedex in my platinum version, but I am afraid that I am believing in something far from reality.
