I will not be supporting this game at all after buying Yakuza 1 and 2 on day one. If Sega is going to do this crap, I'd rather not have them localize Yakuza 4 at all. Maybe if Sega passes, they'll let a smarter company like Atlus or Ignition do the localization.

I agree. There is so much fail in SEGA's excuse.

So much fail.

Also, I'm kinda glad they did do this.

I was waiting for SEGA to screw this shit up so I can save some cash, and they did.

Seriously? Its THAT big a deal to you? Oh wait this is the internet and EVERTHING is the worst atrocity to ever happen.

I played through 1 & 2 as well, and there is so much to do in Yakuza, one less side thing should not be that big a deal, especially since you experienced hostess clubs in in 2, right?

If you really need a hostess bar simulator, I'm sure there is a subset of games that can accommodate your needs. Meanwhile I'll be kicking ass with Ryo.

Sorry, but I can't support this. Yes it's sad that some content was cut, but from Sega's words it was either cut some content out OR not have Yakuza 3 out in America at all. I'd rather at least have the storyline available in the US then never have it here at all. Sega is in a position where they're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I was looking foward to the Hostess clubs. It was part of the Yakuza experience. Oh well, I hope Sega adds it in as DLC but I highly doubt.

Could it possibly be that a lot of us enjoy Japanese culture and wanted all of the experience from Yakuza3 localized since we can't read Japanese?

Any content cuts are no fun.

I completely agree with the cut mini-game covering Japanese history (99% of us would have had to google, and what fun is that?) but cutting a hostess mini-game for fear that we wouldn't "get it"? We're buying a subtitled game about the Japanese underworld, and we wouldn't get a hostess club? What?

What's next, getting rid of all the finger amputation as a means of making amends to ones boss for a screw up?

Looks really good but it was reeeally boring. long, long cuts scenes followed by button mashing? pointless and dull.

haha, says the guy with the Metal Gear Solid avatar.

But, ya, I didn't really like the combat myself. I wish there was a lock-on system. I can see the appeal of the game for some people. It seemed kinda like Shenmue to me....maybe? I never played the other 2.

I also loled @ your comment when you have a MGS avatar even though I'm a huge Metal Gear fan!
I too tried out the demo, I liked the look of it (feel its a pretty close representation of downtown Tokyo) which is the main reason it caught my attention and the character models were quite good as well.
What I disliked about it was the cutscenes started off with voice overs then randomly went to old school 'read text to see what there saying' and then back to voice overs again! Why not just do the whole thing with voice overs?! The combat was pretty meh, defiantly needs a lock on mechanic or something to tighten it up.

As for what SEGA is cutting, 'time-constraints' just sounds half assed to me, most people who are interested in this game will most likely have an interest in Japanese culture, so why westernize it for them....?!

Well that's just stupid. Sorry but if you want to cut content to rush a game out you lose a lot of support from me. I can somewhat understand the Japanese history quizzing since the average joe doesn't know much about Japan. Hint to developers: We're willing to wait if it means content.

I don't get how you rush a game that has been out for a year in Japan I mean, all that needed to be done was translate the game and add subtitles. I don't really see how a year isn't enough time to do just that.

Plus it's not like a delay would have been bad. They picked the worst possible month to release it anyways (March). A delay would have insured that it doesn't get buried by the heavy-hitters...

You're absolutely right Spike (from my favorite show of all time) after the wait we should be getting more content not less.
It's not like they have to hire more voice actors, they just have to type up some more subs.
I hate it when publishers try to get by with as little work as possible; these games aren't cheap you know.

With so many game releasing around now, I don't mind saving that money I was going to spend on something else. Just Cause 2 looks like a fun alternative and I keep hearing about more things they've ADDED.

No thanks. If buying this game supports Yakuza 4 localized by Sega, I'd rather not. If they are going to take this out (along with mahjong and shogi games), what are they going to do for the 4th installment?

Sega: "Sorry we decided to take out ALL of the content in Yakuza 4 of fear that Westerners would not understand what 'Yakuza' means. Instead we replaced Yakuza 4 with GTA 4."

LaughingTarget, boycotting this isn't going to make them keep the next game intact, it's going to make them not release the next game at all. This is a niche series that is barely hanging on to western releases. Send them your concerns, please, but Yakuza needs all the sales it can get if western gamers are going to get to play it at all.

If you're going to remove cultural bits because they are relevant in America, you need to remove the Yakuza, too. Gangsters with samurai swords!? Not culturally relevant. Give them iron knuckles and tommy guns instead.

It's absolutely unforgivable to remove content because it's not culturally relevant.

I can forgive the history quiz... That shouldn't even have been there in the Japanese version. (Unless they're trying for a My Boss My Hero game...)

Yakuza 3 is set in Japan, made in Japan and for the Japanese so I don't quite understand how removing content that is culturally relevant to not just the game, but was the developers intent to recreate the culture of Japan. It is not like removing the hostess clubs or Japanese history quiz game somehow makes the game less Japanese when your obviously in Japan.

The hostess clubs didn't really add anything to the first two games, so it's hard to get too broken up over this. Still not sure why they did it, though.

Didn't really add anything!? It's like 5-6 hours of gameplay in Yakuza 2, covering several genres - there's the "be a host" minigame, the "date the hostesses" minigame, and my favorite, the "own a hostess bar" minigame. I mean sure, it wasn't necessary to the main plot, but that's a bullshit excuse: 90% of these games isn't necessary to the main plot. They're intended to be a snapshot of a certain lifestyle and culture and atmosphere, and removing part of that for being too Japanese is not only incredibly stupid in its own right, it makes me wonder how the rest of the localization was done.

I shudder at the thought of an overly-anglicized translation trying to "clean up" what's essentially a story about beating the shit out of people in a red light district.

Clearly, for those who had ANY intention of EVER buying this game, the hostess bars were a major inducement. Hell, I even enjoyed perusing the magazine racks in the convenience store. I really don't think there ever was much hope of attracting an audience that didn't already have an interest in Japanese culture. Even the history quiz would have been a treat for the hardcore japanophiles.

I agree that buying this release in this form will only encourage similar abuses in the future. I would rather not see that happen to such a great series. Think if every Miyazaki film release was treated like 'Warriors of the Wind" (ok, so the situation is not quite THAT bad).

Still, for me, this just went from a 'buy' to a 'rent'.

Get a grip. Put aside your whole "omg i love Japan so much i must have everything" crap, and actually look at what they have taken out.

If you're willing to miss the entire game for these tiny things, it's your loss to be perfectly honest.

I can't speak for others, but I personally don't like being told 'you can't handle it'. Let me be the judge of that. Besides which it wasn't a cultural decision. It was a business one. They were given X amount of time and money to produce a localized version timed to cash in on the interest in 'all things Japanese' generated by the release of FFXIII. To meet this deadline, some things HAD to go - particularly things of an obscure or culturally embarrassing nature.

In this context, I choose to not support a hastily cobbled together 'cash-in' release for full market value. But I'll be happy to rent it. That's voting with my wallet.
