Eh, my DS phat is still going strong, I do wish the screen was a bit brighter though. I just think the D-pad on it is better than the DSi/DS Lite.

Maybe the D-pad was just messed up in the ones I used but Mario 64 DS was nearly unplayable.

I've not played that specific game on a Lite or DSi, but I have played through several of the Castlevania games and don't recall having any issues.

Of course, at this point, you may as well wait for word of the DS2. If you've been able to put up with the crappy screens on the phat for this long no point in bailing now when a DS2 may not be that far off.

That's because the game is meant to be played with an analog stick.

Regardless, it's just a matter of getting used to it. I've pretty much mastered it on my Lite and got all 150 Stars.

The point of the larger size is for the older people who play things like Brain Age but have trouble reading tiny screens.

@PN04: great idea... make a WHOLE NEW CONSOLE for ONE GAME.

Or if it's for more than just Brain Age: good thing they also increased the buttons & D-pad size to make it easier to play along with the increased screen size.... oops- - that's right, THEY DIDN'T.

The DSi's +Control Pad is just as good as the original DS's (same "clicky" style). The DS Lite's +Control Pad was horrible, though. Really mushy and sometimes difficult to do diagonals.

I'm not someone that play games outside in a portable console.
I play my DS and PSP at home. Thus this is the best DS to do so.

I'm the same way. I rarely take my ds with me anywhere for portable entertainment so fitting this in my pocket was never a real issue for me. I want one but I know there'll be a price drop in a year or so, so I'll just wait on that.

I don't usually play my DS/PSP outside the house either. Afterall, I only really bought them to play the games they have. And I don't want people to make comments to me and such if I'm playing games in public.

Quattro,

Wait. So you don't want to take your portable system outside cuz you don't want people making comments and ridiculing you? Does your DS have like, Hello Kitty stickers or play N*Sync music at high volumes when you turn it on? Do you wear pants outside? It's a tech device, most people will proably think it's some new phone or something. I highly doubt anyone will stop what they're doing to stare, point and laugh at you for playing games in public.

Not trying to diss you, that... "reasoning" just really caught me off guard.

I was hoping that with a bigger size they may have added in a GBA port to make it the best of the DS and DSi worlds. That to me is still the biggest reason to not get a DSi.

Yeah, I rarely use my DSi as a portable handheld console. I will probably end up trading my DSi up to one of these. The only thing I'm sort ticked off about it the fact that the DSi just came out, and now there's ANOTHER DS that better suits my needs. Oh Nintendo...

That's the perplexing thing about the XL, though. Yes it's form factor is bigger -- makign holding it easier -- but even if you have big hands the buttons are still the same size. So I don't see this as much of an improvement in that regard.

Nah, I'd be fine with same-sized buttons. Playing my sis's DSi, the buttons are more clicky, like the GBA SP, but a bit different, feeling better than "squishy" buttons, of which my DS Lite's D-pad doesn't feel right. I'm totally interested in this aside from the prospect of a DS2.

Well, being bigger means that is a better e-book reader that the DS Lite... but unless there is some app in the DSiWare that I'm unaware of, you would need homebrew for that.

...man, they should've marketed it as a e-book reader.

With a back-lit screen (which would eventually start to hurt the reader's eyes) and battery life that can't even come close to that of a device like the Kindle, Nintendo can't really do much to compete with other eReaders... although Apple doesn't seem to care about that and still markets the iPad as one...

This is for me !

This is clearly aimed at the adult users of the DS & DSi. The original phat was a pretty comfortable fit in my hands.

I started getting arthritis in my hands in my EARLY 20s (23-24) generally my consoles only get use with the big comfortable controllers(joysticks), and i find myself PC gaming more often simply for issues of comfort now (im 32)

The DS lite(which i currently use daily on my train commute) Hurts my hands to use for long periods, it FORCES casual gaming just due to comfort factor for me. I have issues with playing Gamepad dependent games, and anything using the shoulder buttons But it works fine in "book" orientation, and stylus driven games.
Ive started Bringing my GP32, Lynx or TurboExpress instead recently they are just more comfortable to play.

I'll be watching for a gamestop trade-in deal when they arrive, Plus the dark color is nice compared to my first run White "lite", I could just never justify replacing it for a simple color change, and the DSi was smaller. But for a bigger brighter, More comfortable DS, Sign me up.

Isn't the silver one a DS Lite? There's not Gba port in a DSI. So the gallery compares DSi XL to DS Lite to the original DS.

You... could fit a GBA slot with that extra room... Am I the only one still against it for not having GBA support? What about games that used the connection between the DS and GBA games? Kirby, Pokemon, and a few others aren't fully playable without a GBA slot.

In the years I've had my DS Phat, I've never played a single GBA game on it, nor had any desire to. To me, it's not that big a deal. I mean, it's a 9 year old system. Nintendo isn't going to provide backwards compat for it forever.

I used the GBA slot in my Phat just yesterday. Was waiting at the mechanic's and fired up an old save of Final Fantasy V after I got tired of Advance Wars DS. Of course I was totally lost and had no idea what I was supposed to be doing, but that's beside the point.

I agree. The reason they took it out is because of issues with the battery life, but now that the battery life is back up, they need to put the GBA slot back in so that we can play Gba games. Poor Activision, the GH:On Tour franchise is probably failing because they removed the GBA slot...

This may give me an excuse to buy a DS to go along with my PSP.

The miniscule screen was the main thing holding me back.

Sounds like this remedies that.

I am happy with my DS Lite. I like being able to play my older Advance games as well.

That being said if I were to get a DSi I do think that it would be a DSi XL.

I dunno what makes it better looking than the DSi vanilla.

Maybe it's that its got huge.... tracts of land?

Sadly, I might have to get this, because of my giant hands. What makes this even worse was that I was making fun of this monster since announcement. I probably still could fit it in my pocket though, one of my pairs of pants has huge pockets.

The DSi XL won't do anything for giant hands. The buttons, and the spacing between them are exactly the same size as the previous DSes (except the phat). It just has a bigger screen, for all those people who can't read the small text.

If you want a DS for giant hands, the orginial one is still the way to go!

It's not really the face buttons, it's the shoulder buttons that I'm having trouble with. Because of those damn shoulder buttons, my hands cramp up after a few hours of play. Will the XL have bigger space between the face and shoulder buttons? Because that's all that matters.

My kids love their DS Lite. When I show the DSi and DS LL to them, and asking them which one they like more, they point to DS LL without hesitation. Probably kids find it more appealing to have bigger screens. The only concern for me is the weight.
