Why does 3d Mario need some new mechanic? To me, Mario's appeal to me is in the new ideas they present - which is hardly ever tiring compared to fps & rpg genre

I half agree, half disagree.

Mario 64 was one of my favorite games ever, and while I don't like seeing weird stuff tacked on just for the sake of having something "different", it's been more than 10 years now and I couldn't even make it through SMG I was so bored.

Looks like they reused everything from the first game to make a cheap sequel, not that I'm really complaining, but it breaks with tradition of each new mario game having a totally different theme or gameplay.

Good point, these new challenges in SMG2 seem much more creative and difficult and creative than those of SMG (albeit those were great too, just too easy!) and I think it's great to retain the same formula, just adding new puzzles, and scenarios.

My most anticipated game this year! I loved the art direction and gameplay of SMG, so I'm glad SMG 2 seems to be sticking to the same style.

Real quick. It's been a little over 2 years since you named it one of the best games of 2007 not 3 as it says in the first sentence since you gave the top 10 list for 07 in the beginning of 08 and it is currently February 10.

Sounds exactly like I'd expect. More Super Mario Galaxy. Day one purchase, then. The first one is still one of if not the best game on the Wii.

Joystiq, you need a new method of deleting posts. Comments left dangling get downvoted when they are out of context.

It's quite aggravating to see.

Of course, common sense should also kick in here. I'm pretty sure Dv8thwonder isn't calling Mario a "Racist SOB".

Tell it I say, "hi" back.

Just because I said that doesn't mean that I dislike all the other ones.
I have NSMB and love it. I've bought every single Mario game and will continue to do so. It's one of the few franchises that has never lost it's appeal or relevance. I just like hearing which one people liked best. Those two are my favourites.

NSMBWii is your favourite Mario game of all time then?

I don't understand the hatin' on SMG or 3D Mario, in general. IMHO, SMG was a gorgeous, brilliant game. It had something truly special. I don't know how to describe it, but it was magical. I'm being completely serious here...I adore that game. Perhaps it's less fun when played all alone...? My wife and I played through the game together, switching between playing as Mario and being the pointer-thing. We played until the wee hours every night until there were just a handful of stars left to collect, and we were finally burnt out. NSMB Wii, on the other hand...we played through that coop and most nights it barely held our interest.

ANyway, I'm super stoked for this game! The first one was one of the best games this gen, on any system.

I wonder how the appeal of SMB appeals across generations. As an Xer who played the original SMB as a teen in the eighties, I am totally steeped in all SMB lore and believe I am predisposed to love every little nook and cranny of the game. I know that my experience and nostalgia colors my love, reception and enjoyment of every Mario game I play today- but I wonder if this is true for someone born in 1990 rather than someone who started playing games in 1990?

One final note: I am much, much happier with Nintendo's apparent willingness to provide original, legit Mario titles more often than once a console generation. Between Galaxy, New SMBWii and Galaxy 2, I think we're doing pretty well.

I'm super amped about this game. I still haven't collected every star in SMG, but I still like to pick it up a couple times a month and get a couple of them. Few of my other games ever have had me come back after completing the story.

I had many arguments about SMG being better that GTAIV of the same year. I wonder if the sequel will stand up to that years heavy hitters.

Mario always ages well, but I think the state of the industry is growing up at an exponential rate.

Ugh.... Another one. I can't stand the first. Everyone praised it. Except me. The cutscenes were terrible and unskippable, the camera was awful (never turned when you needed it to, and could be rotated when you didn't need it), half of the levels were lame (some were blatant copies of others, where they used very similar layouts), and so many of the boss fights were recycled. Not to mention that the final boss fight of the game was so anti-climatic. It SUCKED. I beat that battle twice in a row without ever dying. It's that easy. A final boss is meant to be powerful. Not weaker than all the rest in the game.

I'll admit, for most of the time, the music was good, and the graphics were clean, although there were some things that bothered me.

Overall, the power-ups were horrible. The Boo Mario power-up was kind of cool - same with the Ice Flower; how you could skate and all. But the Fire Flower was pointless, the Bee Mario power-up was lame (that queen bee level is disturbing), and the spring was utterly useless.

Also, the collision programming wasn't great, which was especially noticeable in the "Luigi's Purple Coins" level, and a few of the others. Although, for the most part, I enjoyed the Toy Town Galaxy, or whatever it was called.

The whole design of the "base" was terrible (who would even be big enough to use those knives and forks in the kitchen?!) and all the characters were annoying. Especially that random woman. I hated her. Plus, why did she become a giant at the end of the game? No explanation. I really hated that whole ending cutscene. Again, as I said before, you can't skip the cutscenes, so it sucks ass.

The mini-games (Ray Surfing, for instance) were terrible. They were hard, but their difficulty came from a terrible design. Ray Surfing (it might have been called something else - I can't remember) was unbearable. Sure, I beat it eventually, but it was unnecessarily difficult. The ball mini-game was actually fun, but again, there were some unnecessarily difficult parts that just ruined the enjoyment of it.

Unfortunately, most of the difficulty came from a poor camera. Actually, Ratchet and Clank 2 had "gravity spheres" that Insomniac removed from the game because of their complexity, and put them in the Insomniac Museum of R&C2. They, even though on a much smaller scale, were done better, in my opinion, than SMG's 3D camera engine and such. You could roam all over them, and control the camera pretty well. Sure, there was room for improvement, but I think that, IF they were better than SMG's, yet still not perfect, then, it wasn't wise to have such a design in SMG.

Finally, the icing on the cake for me was Luigi. So, you rescue him in a level. Great. But I wanted to PLAY as him. Remember Super Mario 64 DS? The original only had Mario, but the DS version pulled off having 4 playable characters really well (although I wish it was slightly quicker to change characters, but never mind). Super Mario Galaxy had to ruin it though. Instead of letting you switch, it makes you beat the game before using him. I thought that if I hadn't got to use him before beating the game, I wouldn't get him at all, else there'd be no point. I also heard about a secret level, unlocked by completing the game 100%. Well, I was shocked to find that, after beating the game, I DID unlock Luigi. But not how I expected. It allowed me to start the stupid game ALL OVER AGAIN, but with Luigi. I haven't played it enough to know if Mario takes Luigi's role or not, but if he does, then we may actually get some dialogue from him, but I've never cared to play enough to find out. That is the WORST way to make more than one playable character. Epic fail.

This will be a "try before buy" game for me, but I am really hoping that this one redeems itself and gives me more faith in Mario again. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is boring (so is the one on the DS, but at least it's a lot more entertaining than the Wii version. The Wii version did try to replicate some SMB3 stuff though, which I'm impressed with), and Super Paper Mario, whilst fun, has a TERRIBLE story, and is nothing compared to the other two (I like the new yet classic fighting style, but the whole idea of 2D in a 3D world is lost). Here's hoping for a much better game (not that I'll keep my hopes up).

Super Mario Galaxy is one of the greatest video games EVER made! It's pure magic. And the sequel could very well be just as great!

Ps. The game is called Super Mario Galaxy 2, i.e. it's a direct sequel to SMG, so stop complaining that it's too similar to the original. When Nintendo releases a new console, they WILL make a new, original Mario game, this game is just a great bonus ;D

Ahhh, I LOVE SMG! Even if it's really similar to the '07 release(which I can't imagine it'll be exactly the same), I'm still going to run out and get it. I don't understand all the haters--this game is truly fantastic for multi-playing. The BF and I played through it in one weekend and it's one of my fondest memories. I do hope they've improved the camera this time, there was such a lag in SMG 1 :/.
