BioWare has detailed another dose of Mass Effect 2 DLC, dubbed the "Firewalker" pack. The upcoming release includes five missions featuring the Hammerhead vehicle, according to an update on the Cerberus Network page, part of the official Mass Effect site. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk described the Hammerhead as a "hover tank," during a recent interview with Joystiq, adding, "It's not a wheeled vehicle, so it's going to have a bit of a different control scheme" than did the much-maligned Mako vehicle featured constantly in Mass Effect 1.
On the website, the Hammerhead is promoted as "a heavy assault vehicle that hovers over the battlefield at up to 120 kilometers per hour [75 mph] and features a guided missile system ensuring accuracy even during aggressive maneuvering." In other words, it's everything the Mako wasn't -- and it's optional.
The Firewalker DLC pack is scheduled for a "late March" release and will be accessible free of charge through the Cerberus Network in-game delivery system. Of course, nothing's really "free" when it's got Cerberus' shady name attached to it, is it, Mr. Illusive Man?
[Thanks Runyon C!]

Mmmm more Mass Effect 2 goodness. Thank you Bioware for popping out a steady amount of DLCs for this game as well as Dragon Age (rawr).
Though I am a little bummed about reading this article, looks like the supposed new recruit-able character isn't smacked on in this current DLC?
Also I'm joining the 'Why so much hate on the Mako?' crew. Yes the Mako was a mess, but you can't say you didn't get used to it eventually. And IMO if I had to choose between the Mako against exploration, I say I'd take the Mako all over again. I was really bummed ME2 took the axe to a good portion of exploration. It's not like the old Mako couldn't be tweaked to be better, but then again its doesn't mean the Mako was NECESSARY for exploration, though some people like to use that as an excuse to cut corners.

I wish they would've kept the Mako but just made it less floaty and made it steer a bit better. The damn thing felt weightless.

It was just GRINDING. That's what was wrong w/ the Mako portions. All you had to do to find crap was go from one corner of the map to the next and it would magically appear on your map. That's it. So for that, I had to suffer driving a vehicle that seemed to be moving at a half mile per hour? BORING. It was just outright boring.
Next time you need to pick up somethng from the store, don't go faster than 1MPH and see if you enjoy it.
It was just an unnecessary device used to make the game longer, nothing entertaining or interesting about it and what ever loot you found, it was either a collectible (like Turian insignias) or rarely something of real value. All they had to do was make that Mako a little faster and there would have been a lot less complaining.
At least in ME2, they tied exploring to your upgrades... so if you want better weapons, you HAVE to explore. They gave it a real purpose... but guess what? the exploring in Me2 is equally as boring.

This is kind of a megaton for me. I've been anticipating whatever the Hammerhead was supposed to be, with no idea as to how things would shake out as to what the DLC would actually be in the end. This sounds awesome, more than I expected.

Just curious, are a lot of the people that had trouble with the Mako playing the game on the 360?
I played ME 1 on the PC and I didn't have that much trouble with the Mako. Just wondering if it was a lot more unwieldy for console users.

I played on 360 and had no trouble. I think it's just frustration at having to wander around barren planets with a slow car with odd physics.
What made my experience MUCH better was looking up each planet on the mass effect wiki. Yeah, you could call it cheating, I just call it getting a good chunk of my life back. I have no ill will towards the Mako now as a result.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of what an RPG really is. For some reason most people picture games like, dragon age, or pretty much any MMO. Any game where you can really put yourself into the shoes of your character, and feel like that could really be you, is a role playing game. And both Mass Effect 1 and 2 deliver in a way that no other game really does; With the exception of maybe the games made over at Bethesda.

I have to disagree. In an RPG, YOU are the character, the character is not you. And yes, there's a big difference in what I just wrote.
2nd, RPG is just a GENERIC term... technically, ALL video games are a type of 'RPG'. Don't you play the role of a quarterback in Madden? Right. You don't play the role of a driver in Burnout?
So to me, there are certain traits and aspects (and I'm NOT referring to 'genre' like sci-fi or fantasy) applied to PC/digital RPGs to set them apart from action games, sports games, etc.
These traits are typical and if anyone ever pays attention to what BioWare has done in the last 10 years, they are consistently trying to bust those RPG stereotypes... at the same time, they are trying to make 'casual' RPGs that anyone can play. There is nothing wrong with that at all and BioWare makes some of the best games ever. There's no question that ME is an RPG. But ME2 is LESS of an 'RPG' than ME1 was, and not to shock a lot of people here, but some of us actually LIKED those conventional RPG elements that are now gone.
Is ME2 a Triple-A, 5-star game? Absolutely. But it was different enough to make people notice that it's really NOT the same game as ME1 was. BioWare calls it 'improvements', but its really more like an overhaul. Most people are ok with it, I take it for what it is, but people who don't like ME2 for these reason have very valid points as well.
All in all... I love ME1, I like ME2, and I sure as hell miss KOTOR 1 & 2 that much more after playing ME2.

The question I have is, will you be able to explore all the other planets using this new vehicle? I mean it would suck if you can only use the vehicle for those 5 missions and that's it.

I didn't find the mountains to be too bad, if you stalled most of the time you could keep moving if you pushed at an angle. Of course a little use of the map and studying the terrain helped. Often it was just a matter of taking a valley around the mountain instead of trying to go over.
