Wha?! A GOOD console Sonic game? Could this be a sign of things to come?

Not quite. This was licensed to Sumo Digital. Call me when Sonic Team actually has a hand in it in any way other than signing the characters away. (I'm looking at you (Dimps and Sonic Team's Sonic 4)

Well hold on, there's nothing wrong with that. Nintendo hands their characters off to second and third party studios all the time. Retro gave us the spectacular Metroid Prime series and HAL gave us a bunch of good Kirby and Super Smash Bros games.

As long as we get a GOOD Sonic game, who cares who's making it?

Yep, and one of my favorite Legend of Zelda games was handled by Capcom. I don't care which studio makes it, I'm just happy one of my favorite childhood character can star in a game that doesn't suck.

A good Sega game?

A good Mario Kart clone?

A good game with Sonic on it?

A good Sega game, a Mario Kart clone, with Sonic on it?

I'm shocked in multiple levels.

And I'm also sold, as I have no MK but MKDS.

The rest are understandable, but I wouldn't hate on Sega

loved that game. I still play it on an emulator from time to time...so many memories. I bought a PS1 multitap way back when just for that game. (Ended up also using it for Frogger...good times)

While it won't take the crown away from Mario Kart, in many ways, CTR was better. I was stoked when it came out on the ps one classics.

Only thing I absolutely hated was the announcer, but I think I'll still be getting the game. Was indeed good fun, and it's too hard to pass it up considering just how much Billy Hatcher content is in the game.

He's like those fat people in the scooters at grocery stores. Yeah, they can walk and it's probably good for them if they do walk, but why should they? After all, if the world's willing to provide you with a free scooter you should use it, right? Score!

I love how even though its called "Sonic" and Sega all starts racing, every screen Ive seen of it so far is of Ryo from Shenmue.

I think thats evidence enough that gamers care more about Shenmue than Sonic.

Soo...Sega. Never did beat Shenmue 1 (stupid forklift) and never got Shenmue 2. How about stopping all your wh0ring of sonic for a few years and remake those onto the 360/PS3? Maybe...redeem your name a bit?

It's amazing that "Sonic" is usually a term used in conjunction with "tolerable" so often that when it ends up paired with "pretty good" everyone is amazed. The shock expressed by everyone is just a testament to how mediocre the IP is, the disbelief almost cancels out the decency of the game and makes me still not want to trust it. I'm going to hit the links now and see if every reviewer uses the term "surprisingly good."

lol

Joystiq, you forgot the PC tag.

I know, it's crazy, but there is a PC version.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/901344/

This game is pretty solid. It's much better than I thought it would be, and that is a good thing.

I actually think the Pc-version is the best. I know it lacks online-play but instead it has a solid framerate and in my mind that is very important. I get 55-60 fps all the time, that's not tha case and the xbox 360-verison where my framerate even drops in single-player.

And the best thing. You can play 4-player splitscreen on pc.

I was expecting it to be mediocre at best...however I got it anyways and absolutely love it! Great stuff!! Sure, it doesn't really beat mario kart in my opinion but it gets pretty close.

I concur! While I admit it had the craziness to match Mario Kart, it had none of the refined controls or mechanics (or even the balancing) to make winning anything other than luck!

Tried about 6 consecutive races as Sonic in the demo and didn't win a single one! I've played the heck out of Mario Kart for the DS, so I don't know how much more I would need to play to just place in this darn game. It didn't help the demo had only a frustrating and crowded track, with no minimap.

Repost so I can get my reply in the right place:
Did you play the demo on a system using analog sticks? You can't treat that like the dpad on the DS. If your thumbs kept pushing the sticks to the wall, then yeah, must have been awful.

Bought it last night for PS3 and friggin love the game. I even think it's BETTER then the past two Mario Karts....granted I absolutely hated Double Dash and MKWii just felt like more of the same.

This may be a "clone" but I love the tracks and the characters you can use. The only thing that would make this game better? Toe-Jam & Earl as characters...maybe even Earthworm Jim. :)

I thought the demo was kind of iffy, at least. I assume you can turn him off, but the announcer is terrible...

Beyond that though, the controls in these never feel right. Sometimes they're floaty, sometimes they're too specific. It never feels as good as it does in Mario Kart, although this one certainly comes way closer than something like Sims Racing.

I never like the weapons as much either, but I can get over that.

agreed...also from what I remember the demo has absolutely no BG music in the menus...Honestly that just kind of surprised me for a kart game.

Ugh that announcer........just ugh.

I don't know why it's surprising that it's a good game. Sega Superstars Tennis was very good.

However, I suspect that Sega and Nintendo could make the exact same game, but the one with Nintendo branding would rate 15 points higher out of 100. Nintendo gets serious grade inflation that Sega does not enjoy.

Then again, I don't really care for racing games too much.
