We had assumed that putting PopCap's devilishly addictive Plants vs. Zombies on a handheld device was a recipe for commercial success. However, we didn't anticipate it setting a new sales record for the App Store, moving over 300,000 downloads in just nine days. At $2.99 a pop, the game has already netted the casual developer over $1 million on the iPhone platform alone.
We're sincerely hoping this inspires PopCap to explore other match-ups between things in nature and humanoid aggressors. Trees vs. Ninjas? Migratory Geese vs. Robots? The Ocean vs. Witches? Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus vs. Everyone Else on Earth?

I'm glad it has been successful for them, they are great developers.

I agree, now they just have to fix it so that whenever I get a phone call in the middle of a goddamn level, it doesn't kick me out and make me start all over again. It didn't do that for Peggle, so what the hell?

What a terrible and disturbing movie. I scanned through it out of curiosity, and man was it weird.

Netted over $1M? Don't forget Apple takes 30% so that leaves them around $600k on 300k units sold. Not too bad, but not quite there yet.

Apple receives 30% of all app income that covers everything including the cost of credit card transactions, unless the application is free, then the only charge to the publisher is their annual $100 developer license.

I don't understand why Pop Cap hasn't been releasing more games to XBLA. The games were coming pretty steady up to Heavy Weapon then the releases tapered off...

Tower defense and puzzle are the best genres for the iPhone in my opinion. Fieldrunners and Crystal defenders are my two fav iPhone games. I'll get plants vs zombies tonight.

300,000 * $2.99 = $897,000
$897,000 * 70% (developers cut) = $627,900
Not sure where the 1 million came from.

Could come from "sold more than 300,000".
334,449 sales would tip it over the 1 million mark.
Also, the linked article notes gross, not net so it would not factor Apple's 30% (Although Griff does say "netted the developer", so that would add to the confusion)

IN all FAIRNESS, the DROID has the SMALLEST user BASE of any of the MENTIONED platforms. IF they haven't HIT XBLA yet, DROID's not gonna HAPPEN for A while.
