I've never really liked Civ, I think the Total War series has better battles and campaigns and that the Europa Universalis series has better grand strategy.

Do either of those let you declare beat up Americans with Sitting Bull or have Ghandi declare war on you, do they?!

What's with all the downvotes? Shadowfax had a perfectly valid opinion. If one wants pretty, big, tactical battles Total War is the best (only) choice, while Paradox's games are the deepest by a long shot. What Civ does right is having the biggest time-frame and the most variety, in addition to being the most polished, bug-free and with the most capable AI.
I personally play all three.

It wasn't valid, it's irrelevant. It's like claiming Modern Warfare 2 is a better combat simulator. The Total War series and the Civilization series are not even in the same genre, let alone close enough to compare.

I can understand where Shadowfax is coming from (although I wonder how he types with hooves).
Europa Universalis is a far deeper civilization-sim but CIV has never really been that militarily strategic (build doom stack, move stack).
However I'm optimistic about the hex-based army formations - doom stacks suck!
We might actually see some military strategy in a CIV game and because of that, Shadowfax is perfectly right to bring up the Total War series - it's not really a fair comparison with CIV's past but it may very well be the sort of game he was looking for.

Oh dear Sid, you may have done it again!
Almost as long as you live you draw me in deeper and deeper with every single game! Civilization is definitely one of the greatest Turn-Based strategies ever, looking forward to spending most of my free time this Autumn on the Fifth installment.
I hope they kept Leonard Nimoy from the IV th games' opening, he was awesome.

Any resemblance to SMAC is welcome. Honestly, slap an advanced AI on the same old SMACX, and I'd pay twice as much for it as I paid for Civ4.

Civ V, I must have you NOW. I'm ready to kiss away weeks of my life.

Agreed. Sadly, SMAC rights are like coal in CivIII -- it's in the wrong fraking place and Sid apparently doesn't have enough furs, wines, gems and incense to woo it away from EA. I'm sure Sid is building armies of tanks as we speak to go take it back, but what without railroads that he can't build without coal, the game will be over before he can get them in position.

I'm just gonna second your whole comment.
Too bad I am going to have to wait for a year for it to be ported to Mac.

I feel like I just watched every discovery channel documentary on past civilizations and cultures crammed into one min and a half segment. Think they should just make the first guy voice everything in that game. either that or james earl jones.
But yeah, can't freakin' wait. Why must you tempt us!?
