Prolific mobile publisher Gameloft has revealed its next project: An iPhone/iPod Touch port of Ubisoft's N64 platformer, Rayman 2: The Great Escape. Let's get our obligatory naysaying out of the way, so it won't sour the rest of the post: "But, it doesn't have buttons! How are we supposed to make well-timed jumps while avoiding sharp, pointy obstacles without buttons?" We can't answer that for you, dear reader. You have to answer that for yourself.
The good news is that the game looks surprisingly faithful to its original iteration. You can watch a trailer for the title, which is due out March 1 on the App Store, after the jump.

The DS port was terrible to control, let's hope this one is a bit better.

Yes.
There's a PS2 port that is one of the more recent versions
I was lucky to play it on the dreamcast and it really is one of the best platformers ever.

I bought Rayman DS and was very disappointed with my purchase. Fortunately, I was able to play the game on Sega Dreamcast, and it was excellent. Track the game down on whatever system you can, I recommend Dreamcast, PS2, N64 (in that order). It's supposed to be one of the best looking N64 games, just so you know.

It's obviously not as good as tactile buttons, but having a console on your phone, wherever you go is very handy

Really? Because I had a SNES emulator on mine and the only thing I could play was RPGs because the controls were so god awful, and sometimes even just walking around was hard.

Kinda sad how they had to let another company port their OWN game after failing to port their OWN game.

Fun fact! Rayman 2 was also available on the Dreamcast!

I think you might be right already. Call me crazy but the model detail looks better then N64 while not quite what iPhone games typically look like either.

I played Rayman 2 on PC (then I sold it once I FINALLY beat it. It was pretty hard for me when I was younger. Not so much now though), but the DS version I played recently and that blowed. I played the PS1 version at a friend's place and loved the English voiceovers rather than the gibberish so hearing that this a N64 port saddens me, since it won't have the English voices, but still, it's a great game, and if it's as good as playing it on PC or a home console (NOT DS), then it should be a great buy.
On a side note, does anyone know if the PS2 port, Rayman Revolution, has the English voiceovers? Because if it does, I might buy it. I think the Dreamcast one has the most extras, and I believe it has an extra level or two, but I will buy either the PS1 or PS2 version depending on if the PS2 one has English voiceovers, then buy the Dreamcast one once I get a Dreamcast (because an NZ Pal one is expensive).

I feel like I've been spoiled with all of the 'fan service' over the past few years, meaning the remakes of familiar franchises, but this just isn't cutting it for me. I want a new, HD 2D (maybe 2.5D) Rayman. And I want it yesterday.

yes!
the n64 version of rayman 2 is so much better than the PS1 port IMO.

Well, I only played a bit, but I liked Rayman's voice. Personally, I hate the gibberish though. It drives me insane. Even if the English is cheesy, it's easier on my ears.

Please do the game justice and release it on Steam, XBLA, PSN, and Wiiware (if possible).
Not saying the iPhone doesn't deserve it, but this game must be replayed by as many people as possible.

joystiq, you REALLY need an "exclude" feature on your site like Engadget's... I'm getting sick of entries of this iphone fail when browsing the site.

Why does everyone say the DS version fails so bad? I have it and I don't think it is completely horrible, especially not enough to hate it until you play on another console.
I would like to buy this but It would be a waste if it were the same thing as the N64 game (because I own the n64 and DS versions and wanted to play some of the minigames from the other versions.)
