Heavy Rain strikes me as another PS3 exclusive that will have long legs, rather than a sales blowout.

That's why he said what he said....shooters aren't games that sell well after the first few months.....this will be a marathon game

Not trying to start a flame war here, but I can't help but notice that people panic when an exclusive third-party Wii game (i.e. No More Heroes 2) sells less than 30,000 units in its first week, yet a Heavy Rain is in, I feel, roughly the same category, but the general consensus is not one of failure and rather hope for the future. And just to clarify, I do agree with you Dr. Blight, and I think Heavy Rain will be successful over the course of a longer span, I just feel that people would tend to expect failure had these been first week sales for a Wii game. Maybe I'm alone in this belief, just curious.

Heavy Rain is on track to break a million units sold by years end. For a new IP and a very different kind of game, I'd say that's pretty darn successful.

aReEeNeN,
You're right, it's a stupid double standard that people try to justify but really just boils down to whether or not they like a certain game or system.

Chris.D
Technically speaking, the sales figures of 30,000 in a month for No More Heroes 2 were a little skewed, seeing as "the game was on sale for less than a week in January" so the time period was almost identical, I'm just a little surprised that people don't worry over a game like this as well, especially considering the fact it's budget was probably higher than No More Heroes 2 due to differences in hardware. That being said, I feel that both No More Heroes 2 AND Heavy Rain will be successful, just not necessarily instantaneously.

Also, Heavy Rain was released 3 days ago, so unfortunately it got stuck with the same skewed treatment as No More Heroes 2 for first month sales (seeing as it will only have 5 days for this month), so it might be a little tough for it to reach that 200,000 mark. Hope it does well though, it seems to be a very different kind of game (as is No More Heroes 2), so I especially want to see both do well in a game industry where change often seems to breed contempt...

Yeah but Heavy Rain already outsold No More Heroes 2 (according to VG Chartz).

New IP selling on more with a smaller user base. I don't see the logic in this complaint.

I don't really follow the Wii too much, so maybe that does happen. But that's not really the case when comparing these two titles.

@Nutman

Little Big Planet has had some long legs as well as the Uncharted series. Maybe it's because more people starting buying PS3's but it is weird that some of the first party Sony titles sell better as time goes on than right away. Thats usually something only from the Wii.

According to VG Chartz, right now No More Heroes 2 has outsold Heavy Rain by a small margin, but it's also been out longer to its credit. Additionally, there is only sales data for Japan for Heavy Rain and only sales data for America for No More Heroes 2 (being as each game has only been released to a single territory). I would also have to argue that No More Heroes 2 could still be placed in the same category of new IP as this is only the second game in a very un-marketed series--especially outside of the gaming community.

I was well aware of the fact that No More Heroes 2 was US sales and Heavy Rain was Japanese sales, I was just trying to point out that both games had only been released in a single territory with similar sales numbers but that the reaction was a little different. I also realize that Japanese and US gamers often have VERY different tastes in gaming. Again, I was just taking note of the reaction, not the sales figures themselves. Let's hope both sell well as it can only mean good things for "fresher" games.

aReEeNeN, dude.....for one thing just cause someone else brings out the VGChartz numbers don't mean you should.....as those numbers are about as accurate as the current count of stars in the universe.....

Fact is your are trying to compare Japanese sales numbers to US numbers and that just isn't comparable considering install bases and population......sure we like to do this for certain games.....I.e. I said that FF13 most likely won't sell on 360 here in it's first week what it did on PS3 in Japan in it's first week....but that's the same game but just on different systems.....

Like I said wait for the US numbers then if you choose to compare them to US NMH2 numbers.....I am with u that both are great games but NMH2 doesn't have the hype train that Heavy Rain does and that's in itself is just wrong.....as NMH Needed the promotion

Uncharted 2 sold what, 500k in it's first month? Now it's up to 3.5 million. Killzone 2 wasn't very big it's first month, now it's over two. The games just are long sellers.

aReEeNeN,

I totally get what you are saying here in regards to the different reactions the two games are getting, and not the sales numbers.

This is Joystiq, where the Wii (not necessarily Nintendo as a whole) is treated as the red headed step child whom deserves to be beaten.

According to vgchartz, Uncharted 2 sold 850k in it's first week. Sales slowed down but picked up again due to the holidays.

At least a french person trying to do an american accent sounds better than an americans attempt at a british accent which always seems to come off as a forced posh queens english country manor type accent.

I know a radio announcer, she told me when youre supposed to do serious job or global stuff, you have to evade any american accent, even when most think there isnt a particular one. I agree. Get over your nationalism Chris.

probably won't sell well because its so niche, but its a great game. i liked the demo a lot. nothing plays the same way twice, i went thru the demo 4 times and it was always different.

Well, I'm just gonna tell you that the demo really isn't representative of the whole game. And there are major choices you can do, not just small changes. I'm on my third playthrough (Trying to get a platinum) and I have discovered whole scenes that I didn't play before.

Yeah, but there are alot of users who are experiencing the freezing, save data corruption bug. U.S users got a patch at day one, when it was released.
But Japanese users got a patch recently. (The game was released in Japan on the 18th.)

Its a good thing that a non-Japanese game did good, but I really wish people who are new to western games don't get bad impressions by this...
