We know full well what the PS9 will be capable of, but what of the successor to the PlayStation 3, the PS4? Jack Tretton doesn't seem to know, telling Fast Company that he "can't even imagine what can be done technically beyond the PlayStation 3 in the near future." We'd theorize it involves more high-definitionier graphics than ever before.
Tretton continued to reiterate the same "ten year" message -- the proposed shelf life of the PS3 -- that the Sony team has followed since even before the launch of the system. With 2010 marking the fourth year of the PS3's life cycle, it seems increasingly likely that Sony will stick to that goal. Of course, that's not to say the "PS4" won't ever be realized. We'll see the PS4 "when somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we're able to do on the PS3," Tretton offered. However, he doesn't expect that eureka moment to come any time soon, adding "we are still just starting to harness [the PS3]."

IMO the best new feature about the Xbox Next is the team of Psysops they have that tell you how many times your console will red-ring during its lifespan, that way you can get all the costs out of the way upfront.

Sure the PS4 will be capable of a lot of amazing things.
Of course the only feature all the devs will take advantage of are trophies so only 2 games will have 4D at 120fps:
Starhawk: which will disappoint by not being the Warhawk follow up but based on the author of The Spiral Dance.
and
Son of God of War: Aneurism of the Gods.

I'm glad they're trying to get all they can out of these consoles. I'm not made of money, and updating to a new system every four years really sucks.
Still though, I bet I'll have to buy a brand new 360 at some point before the system leaves the market.

Please, I'm sure all three next generation consoles are already in deep deep development. They usually start thinking about this right when the last console releases, so by now, alot of R&D is already done. In super top secret labs, thousands of miles below the earths surface.

You're right except for one thing: Sony and Microsoft are likely idling development to see how the public reacts to the Motion Controller and Natal. If those are successful, they'd design their new system around them. If not, they they'd continue with a more conventional, non-motion design.

They already know that motion controllers are a passing fad.

I agree with Dr.Blight. BUT I don't think that motion is going to be primary like on the wii. They will be secondary like the sixaxis or at least mainstream gaming will still be bent on the typical "better graphics, better physics, better everything" routine (which is still great).

I can imagine a whole lot, actually.
Blu-ray Drive. (8x or better)
A/B/G/N Wi-Fi
4GB+ of RAM
Either a highly modified Cell(perhaps closer to the original design of 4 PPUx8SPU each?)or something new.
Either a GPU from nVidia to guarantee hardware PhysX support or some in-house GPU, akin to the Graphics Synthesizer.
Dedicated frame buffer, large enough to support 1080p resolutions with 4xAA and up.
120FPS 3D support.
HDMI 1.4 support.
Standard laptop HDD's, possibly even an SSD?
Did I miss anything else?

I think its safe to assume that all next gen consoles (except maybe nintendos) will have a graphics chip on the processor die. This is the way chip developement is going and a console is the perfect place to start market penetration with. The really good news about that is that we will finally get physics which affect gameplay since all of the solutions now on videoboards can't actually be used to effect gameplay.
The next generation will be defined by physics, I Shagittairus guarantee you.

A new gen means brining something new to consoles, not just updating them. The next gen will be cloud computing.

You clearly don't know a darned thing about RAM if you think a GAME CONSOLE needs more than 4gb. Even that's pushing it. You can get by with most games, even things like crysis and COD, with just 2 gigs. 4 gigs just ensures there'll be no problem. Anything more than that is unnecessary and pretty much overkill. When you factor in the idea that game consoles will probably start using SSDs with their next gens, ram becomes even less necessary, because you won't need to load stuff into it as much anymore. More ram =/= faster games.

Built in tv tuner & dvr functionality would be pure titties. 1 TB hdd as standard ... Basically they need to make it like 10 PS3's duct taped together. 3-D support out of the box and they need to retool Home.
If they did that console bradwart detailed I'd die and be in heaven. That would be insane.

The reason they don't need a lot of RAM is because the background OS doesn't do a whole lot.
Windows 7 - 1.5 gb RAM
PS3 OS - 70mb
The reason PCs need more memory is because the OS is more robust and is doing far, far more than the console OS is. Consoles can pretty much shave 2gb of memory off and be on-par with just the OS running. Then when we toss in the fact that the console OS is optimized around games, there is less RAM use just to access the software. PCs have to grab multiple drivers for sound, physics, graphics, video, and anything else that the game developer may add. Consoles have all that built right into the OS from the start, so it doesn't have to rush around and look for numerous drivers from an array of different companies just to operate the game. With all this considered, even 2 gb of memory may be overkill for the next generation of home consoles.
The only reason it would require more memory is if Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, or anyone else continues to try and turn the home console into a direct competitor to the PC market. It would be a mistake, but that's the only reason it would need more than 2 gb of memory in the next round of console flamewars.
