As if you didn't have enough to play this week, RTS fans, with Starcraft II in beta and Command and Conquer 4 about to drop, here comes the Supreme Commander 2 demo, now available for download over on Steam. The demo features 4GB (!) of complex Gas Powered Games RTS goodness, in which you'll be able to try two levels of the tutorial, as well as play through two missions as the United Earth Federation faction. You'll also get to see some of those new units at work, and, we presume, do some supreme commanding. No peerless or incomparable commanders here -- supreme only!
One of those new units you can try out is a sea-based experimental submarine for the Cybran faction that's modeled and named after a legendary sea monster. So what are you waiting for? Go download the demo and get kraken!

I don't know if the support is in the second one, but one of the coolest things about the first was the mutli-display support. I suspect many people couldn't utilize this, so its quite probable it didn't make it into the second. not that it is a deal breaker but it was nice :)

They really optimized the hell out the engine. In the original SupCom, I get around 15-40 FPS with my E6600 @ 3 GHz/8800 GTS 512/4GB RAM. But in SupCom 2, I get 100 FPS in scenes with no action in 40-60 FPS in action. Settings are on high.
I'm not as impressed on the gameplay side, though. There are a lot of things they improved, but I don't like how they simplified/streamlined some of the gameplay. For example, the economy -- I really liked the adjacency bonus and being able to deficit spend with your resources which allowed you to endlessly queue up buildings. Being able to assign a dozen engineers to a building to speed up building was great as well and I loved playing 2-3 hour long matches (SupCom 2 seems like a faster, more focused game). Also, I read that the biggest map in SupCom 2 is the size of Seton's Clutch. If true, that's a bit disappointing.
That said, the game is solid and I'll probably get it when the price drops; I just miss the complexity of SupCom and TA.

They've changed it.
Economy is like your normal RTS. Once collected, you keep it. No more "You got 1000, you can only keep 1000 while your +/- will support your expansion".
Buildings and units now doesn't use energy when using their abilities like shields.
You can't queue lots of buildings and units because you must have the amount to pay for it straight away.
There's no more adjacency bonus so no more risk for buildings building close to one another.
Experimentals dies to a few normal units compared to hundreds in the first one.
Some experimentals requires making a building to build it.
Spam units? Well this time, there's spam research lab as well for going up the tech.

Just remember this is a demo of the single player, and is a limited demo at best. There is much more to this game... with most of the fun to be had from the multiplayer aspect (in true SupCom tradition). This link here explains 5 things you will not be able to experience with the demo.. worth a read :

What happened to this game? It isn't the same epic feeling as I remember in the previous one. Though I have to agree with the great performance improvement. My biggest gripe was the dialog.. did square enix have that much influence? Everything sounded extremely hokey and the plot "twists" were as lame as can be (what the japanese feel is dramatic is far from what I consider interesting). Hopefully multi-player will make up for it.

I'm a big fan of the original game and its expansion pack; I've even had SupCom 2 preordered from Amazon for about a month now. This demo seriously made me reconsider the purchase. The seemingly step-down in graphical quality is something I can accept, but why did they make the Cybrans talk like Phoenix Wright villains? I'm sorry, I never want to hear a cyborg piloting a giant mech of death and destruction utter the word "Toodles".
Better characters and a stronger story was something the series really needed; but this influence from JRPG goofiness isn't the right way to go.

Downloading (it is indeed about 1.8 GB) at max speed. Seems like Steam finally has some more juice over here.
