Gamasutra got a chance to speak with the executive VP and GM of Disney Interactive Studios, Graham Hopper, who says that Disney is swinging for the stands on their future game releases. The games division is learning from "pure" gaming studios and their success, and while Hopper admits that the company hasn't always treated their properties correctly on the gaming side, starting with Disney's Epic Mickey, it wants to "give their projects the time and appropriate resources to be successful." In other words, let them stand on their own as games, rather than squeeze them up against a movie's release date.
And Hopper hopes for quite the payoff, too -- while third-party titles on the Wii have been hit or miss (mostly miss), Hopper expects Epic Mickey's success to go "to Nintendo levels." He does say that they don't want to turn Mickey into Mario by "simply using him as an icon or an avatar in a game," but Disney's goal in the future will be to make sure that each of their properties' appearances are worth it. Hopper says if they port a film to five different gaming platforms, customers should expect "not the same story five times over, but five different stories, each uniquely suited for the platform they're on." A good plan to have, but much easier said than done.

They're going about it the right way. Get a good/great developer, give them all the time and resources they need, think like Nintendo in the design process, but don't just mimic some kind of game that Nintendo has already provided
If Disney follows through with their promise for heavy promotion, they could very well achieve this goal, to get Nintendo-level quality and Nintendo-ish sales to go with it (though Nintendo-ish sales vary wildly from something like Corruption at 1.5 million, to something like Mario Kart Wii off at 20)

This. I read the article, and this is really what Disney was talking about. He was saying that the REASON that 3rd party software can fail on the Wii is because they aren't given the proper resources or time to develop said titles. Instead, publishers push to dump a Wii game out as quickly and cheaply as they can, to try to get it out to the numbers of Wii consoles sold. What Disney was saying, was that they are giving Warren and crew all the development time and resources they need to properly and fully develop this game for maximum potential on the Wii hardware (which is what Nintendo does with its first party titles). I was VERY impressed to hear him talking that way, and hope him the best of luck with Epic Mickey and the other titles they are developing (like with the Marvel licenses). It was encouraging to hear a company with deep pockets like Disney speaking in such a way about game development, not just for Nintendo systems, but for ALL game systems out there that they are going to produce games for.

I really need to learn to read the article first and not just skim the headlines
I thought the title indicated the Disney wanted Epic Mickey to actually GO to Nintendo levels lol
Mickey in World 1-1?
That would be sweet but would never happen.

I get the feeling most 3rd parties are full of the poop when it comes to their efforts (or lack of) or lack of on the wii. Its interesting to see Disney (a company that probably doesnt give a crap about gaming politics) come in with this no nonsense approach.

If they can make the game with Nintendo Levels quality, then I'll support him.
