What if Heavy Rain, which is so often heralded by creator David Cage as "interactive fiction," was just a bit less interactive? Is the game's story and cast of vaguely-French-sounding characters strong enough to carry a feature-length film? We might just find out, some day -- internet super-sleuth superannuation recently uncovered copyright documents which reveal that New Line Productions optioned the rights to turn Heavy Rain into a movie on May 15, 2006 -- just a few days after "The Casting" trailer (NSFW) was revealed at E3.
This doesn't ensure the development of a Heavy Rain movie, of course; it only means if any film studio makes the film, it's going to be New Line Cinema. We think the rights are in good hands -- New Line did some great work on the film adaptations of those Lord of the Rings games.

a bioshock movie is a terrible idea. The entire point of Bioshock was to riff on video game cliches, mainly the illusion of choice. SPOILERS The "Would you kindly" stuff obviously appears as just how people say things to you, but it's actually part of that whole experiment and everything. Making a movie out of that would be ridiculous. It might not be as choice based as Heavy Rain, but it's maybe even more dependent on it's status as a video game

Why is it that ever time a "major" video game comes out there's always talk of a film adaption? For instance, just the other month, a "Mass Effect movie could happen." In October, weeks before Uncharted 2's release, an "Uncharted movie is in the works", and so forth and so. Now, we've got this.
Really, now? Are these films ever going to get made, or is this part some kind of marketing scheme to generate interest in the game itself?

Well, this won't defeat the entire purpose of the game.

Considering the game is basically a movie this could work great. Especially if they do what someone said a film multiple endings like with clue. I don't care that would be awesome

No, please no. Do not take one of gaming's greatest advancements in gameplay and story and put it on the big screen.

biggest advancements in gameplay? I dont mind taking the downvote for this, but, how are Resident Evil 1 controls and QTEs an advancement in gameplay?

I think I may have jumped the gun on the gameplay bit. I believe that this game is such an advance in how a story can be told in video games. It is such a departure from what we are used to, that it feels a bit like a grand advancement. The last thing I want is for a movie studio to get a hold of it and ruin the game as I know it.

These aren't your mothers QTEs. They added to the immersion and really made you feel like you were the character. It was a huge advancement in gameplay simply because it was a completely different take on how you interact with the world and environment. If a developer can successfully marry the immersion of the gameplay in heavy rain and its ability to drive a narrative forward with some really tight shooter / action controls then you'll have the ultimate gaming experience in which you are never removed from the flow of the experience. Instead of static cut scenes you are given these context sensitive QTEs that drive the tory forward. It's not simply having them, it's the way they were used that was genius.

If they do indeed make a movie, I think their would need to be many changes to the story. I loved the game, but some stuff...just didn't add up.
SPOILER ALERT!
For example, when you're driving down the highway on the opposite direction as Ethan their was only two cop cars? Really? And after you crashed their wasn't any cops rushing to the burning car?
And when the house is on fire when you're playing as Madison, where was the firetruck? Didn't anyone see the burning building?
The way I see it, if they make a movie they need to change up those scenes to make it more believable. That is, if they pick THAT storyline to go with, and not the countless other story lines people got.

I wasn't thinking about a firetruck at the apartment (it had only been on fire a few minutes so they were probably still on their way), but I was thinking "where the hell is the fire escape stairs?"
And yeah, I thought the same thing in the highway scene.

1) Did you miss the part when Ethan ran away under the bridge when he heard the sirens approaching?
2) The average response time for a fire department is about 4 minutes. So even if someone saw the smoke as she was trapped initially, she would have still had time to hide from the explosion and escape prior to the fire department arriving hypothetically. Since the game is lousy regarding gameplay time versus real time, we'll never actually know how long she had to escape. It's been a couple of days since I finished that chapter, but it felt less than 4 minutes...I could be wrong.

Let's start casting!
Scott Shelby would be best as played by William Shatner. There's quite a few lines that I thought he sounded just like Shatner anyway.
Can't really think of any of the others. Kinda seems like Brad Pitt would get Norman Jayden. But everyone else is lost on me.

It would suck for those who have beaten the game, knowing who the killer is and all. And you know they would have to go with the good ending. Most movies dont end with all of the cast dying.

Honestly, I hope this goes through, and that the movie is written and directed by David Cage - that way he will finally be subjected to the same standards as Hollywood. That's what he's been whining about all this time, right? Unfortunately, as he will come to find out, movie critics tend to be far less forgiving of unconvincing acting and bad, pretentious writing than the easily-impressed gaming community. (Unless they're watching a James Cameron movie, in which case terrible writing and acting are A-OK to critics.)

I'd rather watch a movie based on Heavy Rain than an idiotic film like that Bruce Willis movie Cop Out. Every time I see the commercial for that thing... ugh.
Did Heavy Rain have plot holes? Sure.. needs to be tightened up a little bit, but I liked it. It kept me more engaged than most games do these days. I'm cool w/ this. Hopefully they won't screw it up (can't see how they can since it's so close to a movie already a writer could just put it together like a jig-saw puzzle..)

I just got back from watching that movie with my old lady tonight. It was freaking hilarious, and I don't lik comedy shows that much. Give it a shot if you want a story that doesn't take itself to seriously and is all kind of LOL funny. It's not supposed to be epic or melodramatic like Heavy Rain ... it was funny as heck dude. Not as good as Land of The Lost with kenny Powers and WIll Ferrel but still really funny. Maybe the best buddy cop movie since Burt Reynolds Cop and a 1/2.

Yeah? Maybe I'll give it a rent when it hits disc then. Just didn't seem all that original to me and.. as funny as Tracy Morgan can be at times just didn't think I'd like it.
I still can't believe it's directed by Kevin Smith :S

First of all, AMAZING GAME!! Second of all, although I was initially thinking, "Why??" to all this movie talk for HR, I thought about it again - IF it's HIGHLY stylized in a way not done in the usual run of the mill flicks with unorthoxed use of cinematography, direction and even "film hue" to give it a dark, brooding, gloomy look when needed, except in the beginning, like in the game, PLUS IMPROVE THE ACTING, then they may have something. The voice acting, for the most part, was the only thing "bad" about the game although I did get used to it, quickly. Can't have bad acting in a feature film for this game.

I can see if now. You're watching the movie then it comes to a decision and shows a message "If you want to save him go to theater 5. If you want to abandon him go to theater 10." I would totally go to a film like that.

One thing to note - if this does get made into a movie, it doesn't have to be New Line that makes it. New Line doesn't exist as a studio anymore, it's just a label under Warner Bros now. That means Warner Bros owns their assets, and they could chose to make the movie themselves.

Some of them kinda do.. the kids in particular.. and Lauren. Madison and Shelby were the most convincing, with Jayden and Ethan not far behind.

I thought Jayden was the most obvious, at least for main characters, but his accent actually seemed to dance between French and Boston. When I first met Lauren Winter in the demo though, I didnt occur to me until later that her character wasnt supposed to be french

I'm not sure I would credit the studio, New Line with the success of Lord of the Rings. I think it's more a product of Peter Jackson and the source material. New Line has fallen out of favor since the LOTR trilogy. They're no longer making big budget films, and have instead settled on modest budget comedies, romance films, and horror (their roots-- which always seem to have good returns).
Their recent releases have been:
He's Just Not That Into You
The Final Destination (2009)
Friday the 13th (2009)
17 Again
The Time Traveler's Wife
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
My Sister's Keeper
Four Christmases
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Semi-Pro
At least two of these films made over 100 million, and many of their releases were just ok. The adaptation of Time Traveler's Wife was not good at all, and came off a bit creepy. Journey to the Center of the Earth, the only other adaptation, was mildly entertaining, but seemed more like a theme park ride and an excuse to make a 3D film. Watching the movie in 2D, the movie loses a lot of luster.
I dunno, very few video game to movie translations work. I'm inclined to believe this will probably be yet another.

Wasn't commenting about that :)
I was talking about New Line being responsible for making LOTR (the movie) successful and how that would somehow imply that they would handle a movie adaptation of Heavy Rain successfully. My point was, I didn't think New Line was directly responsible for the success of LOTR, and I certainly don't believe they would handle a game to movie translation any better than anyone else, that is to say, if history is any indication, it would probably be handled poorly.

I doubt much will come out of this. Since the game was early in development stages, and wasn't worth a whole lot as a name, they probably got the rights for fairly cheap. In case the game took off and become a big name, they wanted to make sure they had the rights to make a film to capitalize on that success.
Honestly though, it probably wouldn't end up being a very good movie, anyway.
