We're not sure which element of this story is the most newsworthy, so we'll lead with this: Some person, somewhere in the world, recently spent $41,300 on an extremely rare NES game. Someone was perusing the eBay auction block, saw Stadium Events (which Nintendo bought the rights to and retitled World Class Track Meet), and said, "you know what? That looks like the kind of thing I'd like to spend an American's median annual income on."
According to Video Game Price Charts, that auction has turned Stadium Events into the most expensive NES game ever sold. There are around 200 copies of the game still floating around out there -- which should be enough to send most of you rushing to your local pawn shop in a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory-esque tizzy.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

I disagree with his tone but I agree with his opinion: I am a very practical person (re: not a collector) so spending the equivalent of a nice car on a 20-25 year old copy of a game that has no other value except its age is not normal, IMO.

you're right, this person should spend his money on things he doesn't enjoy.

Before my time, so can any one say if the game was any good, I mean if duck hunt beats it then anyone spending that much on a game is beyond an idiot, unless they plan to play it then resell it and make a profit.

Right. They're going to open it up, play it, and then sell if for a profit. Go back to kindergarten.

Wow way to be rude. Yes with the pass of time if the game is so rare even an opened one would bring in more money it will take time but it is not like he could turn a profit on it sealed any time soon. So open it and enjoy otherwise he is being stupid.

Now I can literally say I know someone who will pay $41,300 to have sex with a copy of Stadium Events.

maybe a dog accidently hit all the right buttons on its owner's ebay account, expending $41,300.... nah, that could NEVER happen.

No you never had a copy. When this was posted on reddit then stolen and reposted on digg there were about a million comments saying "omg i have dis gaem". When ever this story is mentioned everyone says they had a copy. This game is "extremely rare", so no, you don't have one.

I believe I read somewhere (maybe another comment here on joystiq?) that the main value of this is finding the box and instruction manual intact more so than the cartridge itself. I don't recall what the value breakdown was though.

"To use another Castlevania example, Castlevania Chronicles: Cipriani found a three-year high price of $70 for the 2001 PlayStation release in 2007. Two years later, after the game's release on PlayStation Network, physical copies dropped to a low price of $26.93. The people who just wanted to play the game could now get it for six bucks, leaving the PS1 discs for collectors only."

It certainly has an effect on the pricing of items on the resale market.

@Tigre
But the person isn't spending $41,300 for the game itself. They are getting it because of the packaging and because there are only 200 in existence. This game will *never* be released virtually in this form because Nintendo now owns the rights and even if it did it would have exactly ZERO effect on the price to be paid to have this in your collection.

You know what would be hilarious? The new owner gets an X-Ray scan of the box done only to find out the game inside is just a copy of "World Class Track Meet".

Am I the only one who doesn't understand paying a lot of money for something like this. I get that things of this nature are rare and should be treasured. Who though, in their right mind spends that amount of money for something they will never use? Am I just being narrow minded and naive?

kind of. it's his money. provided he's taken care of the things he needs to, why shouldn't he be free to spend his money as he sees fit?
it's his personal choice, people need to lay off.

$41000 is just overkill. It didn't just make it the most expensive NES game, it made it the most expensive home console game (if not official video game) of all time. Unfortunately for the buyer, and other owners of the game, they aren't going to see that number EVER again. It's just ludicrously high for a game with an estimated 200 copies.
Kizuna Encounter for Neo-Geo has less than ten confirmed copies in existence (most say between four and six), and it's never been sold on the open market for more than $4000 US.
Good to have money to spend I guess.

Well now anybody who realizes how much the game is worth is gonna try to get in on the action (and really, anybody who has a factory sealed NES game is probably smart enough to check before selling). He probably just caused the price to skyrocket just by spending the money.

I really dont see the worth in this game at all, I mean like, its not like if you diddnt play this game in your childhood you have missed out or anything. yes, to a certain degree i understand the point of "vintage" and its worth. but to pay THAT much on a video game, it shows the maturity of the dipstick who bought it, wealthy or otherwise. thats like paying 60 clams for an 8-track tape whan the CD is right next to it. The CD im reffering to is a NES emulator for the Pc
