We admit it -- we're suckers for a stylish timepiece. A surprising portion of our income goes towards purchasing new, fancy clocks, turning our living quarters into a slightly less melty version of Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory." The latest object of our affection? Adafruit's Pong-playing MONOCHRON clock, in which two AI opponents compete in pixelated table tennis, and the players' scores denote the current time. Check out a video after the jump to see the chronometer in action.
Sure, it's not the first Pong-clock we've ever laid eyes on, but with a slim $80 price tag, it is the first we've ever considered actually purchasing. Sadly, you have to assemble the clock yourself, a process which requires "some basic soldering & hand tools." Curses! We knew our decision to take home economics instead of shop class would come back to bite us one day.
[Thanks, PT!]

yeah, me too! I would totally pay 80.00 for it but i'm not going to pay that much money for something that i'm not comfortable assembling myself. 80.00 and it's not even put together? ;(

So the right always wins then, right?

Eventually though, the one on the right has had enough of him doing it after 23 times, and resets the whole thing, despite the fact he's beating the left 59-23.

And if this is a 12-hour clock, then his temper is only half as long.

Yeah, it's probably not hard, but for $80 I don't expect 'some assembly required' unless it's a computer. Or a kit car, but that's a different matter entirely.
Has to be the smallness of the market.

Gotta love open source. Those guys give you everything necessary to make it yourself: firmware, PCB and CAD files, etc.

Man! I need one of these. I might buy a few of the kits and sell the extra ones on ebay (assembled of course).

the longest the left side could be leading for is 12 minutes. How tragic. His W/L ratio is the pits.

I think I just found where the 75 bucks I got as some sort of bonus from work is going. Glad I have the tools and knowledge to put this thing together. I didn't take two years of highschool electronics to be beaten by some clock!

Just think, the "Pong Clock" of 2030 will be a fully simulated Bullet Ball match.

The first one I saw was years ago, and had a larger screen.
They put out instructions eventually, so you could build your own.

...or you could just get a Chumby and run the Pong Clock widget. It's about the same price and it's considerably more versatile.
