Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is afraid of the Olympics

A majority of the world's water cooler conversation has centered on the Winter Olympics for the past two weeks, but we've been unable to participate in the chatter. Watching the Olympics fills us with mortal fear -- not just because of the enormous amounts of pressure these people are under, but because of, you know, the actual danger the sports present to their participants. We'll watch a good curling match any day, though. It's unlikely someone's going to hurt themselves while using a broom.

Below are our seven favorite webcomics from this past week, arranged in no particular order. Check them out, then vote for your favorite after the jump. If we missed out on an extraordinary strip, drop a link to it in the comments!

it's like telling people Darth Vader is luke's father, you cant spoil something that everyone already knows!

Today's GG guys is probably the funniest strip I've ever seen linked from this page

Brawl in the Family got it, given the hilarity of forgetting how to do basic things like tackle and bite. Forgetting how to High Jump Kick i can understand, but not scratch.

But props to Jeph Jacques for a good premier on the wrapup.

I gotta be happy to see Jeph get listed here. Questionable Content is my fav webcomic and if he decided to do more VG references I'm sure he'd compete with PA who seems to do the best on the wrapup. Also I thought the Brawl comic seemed familiar and sure enough thanks to Dr. Blight I remember why. I'm not saying it's any less funny, but I didn't laugh because I was trying to remember who had done it before. As much as I wanted to select Jeph I had to go with Penny Arcade cuz' I really enjoyed hunting down the truth about "The Pro" when it happened.

Was going to post the same thing. The joke wasn't really that good all that time ago and its execution in BiTF is even worse.

The comic was ineffective.

Not to mention the VGCats one was hilarious and the BitF one was horrible.

Well, you know, since BitF is actually kind of big I think it would be safe to assume it was probably a coincidence not an actual rippoff. Not everyone is an asshole :P

Ok, I want my vote back. That one was funnier than any of this weeks options... infact it's the first web comic to make me laugh this year.

VGcats seems to have much better comic timing than any other comic... even their stupid idea comics are funnier than the other ones with the clever ideas.

Well done being the first to mention it. That VGCats is one of my all time favourites and this BitF pales in comparison. The drawing, the pauses, that comic is a classic.

I don't think there has ever really been a VG cats comic that I didn't like.

I think what probably happened was BitF read the VGCats one all that time ago and forgot about it, then used the same joke thinking it was original (you'd be surprised how often that happens in books, TV, movies etc)

I was bored so I decided to check into this. VG Cats also won the WWW with the "Rare Candy" comic:

Traceur_Ryuk: That's because Scott Ramsoomair (VG Cats' maker) has been known to not publish comics he isn't happy with. He refuses to publish shit like most other comic writers would. This is also why he doesn't post very often.

On the main topic, BitF has only made a couple of funny comics. Most they do is dumb.

Monday Night Crew, Mass Effect Comix, and Brawl in the Family all made me laugh out loud. All really great comics. Though I'm an old school Poke-nerd at heart, so that Bite thing almost killed me. Funny shit. Brawl in the Family it is...

Pretty boring week, I voted for Jeph Jacques' comic just because it was moderately cute in a Ninja Ken sort of way. As Blight put it, BITF was done before (and much better). And I honestly can't see what 2P Start is complaining about, aside from the animation and 'speed' of it all, the Sonic 4 trailer was looked gorgeous.

Question in relation to the BITF comic - I haven't played Pokemon since Silver & Gold, but I'm planning on picking up Soul Silver when it's released, so I'm wonder just for the sake of wondering: Do you have to feed your Pokemon now in the games? Have they taken it to that level of turning your Pokemon into 'virtual pets?'

The joke is Mario Kart.

Over analyzing the PKMN comic.

I wasn't analyzing squat. I asked a simple question, not in critique of the comic's use, but in simply wondering if that is actually a gameplay element . . . seeing as I plan on buying the latest entry in the series having not played it in seemingly a decade.

And the Joke isn't Mario Kart, the panel featuring Mario Kart was merely the 'punch line." The joke is on themselves, and they're using what they perceive to be negatively clashing art styles in Sonic 4 to set it up.

So, is feeding your Pokemon a feature of the series now? Because I'd really like to know and couldn't give two shits whether or not it's use in a comic was accurate (I loved it when VG Cats did it at any rate).

No. The closest elements to virtual pet that remain are what were introduced in Gold and Silver: Happiness (and by extension, those damned happiness evolutions), and breeding. Breeding has gotten a bit more complex, but remains fundamentally the same

BitF is winning (as of this comment) with a mildly chuckle-worthy joke that has been done a million times...

Then again, it's a really bad week overall.

Also, I'm fairly sure the things on the Asari's heads aren't tentacles, as much as we'd all like to believe they are. Just can't seem to find the source where I remember reading that from for the moment.

Can I vote for just the 1st two panels of Mass Effect Comix? Please?

Yeah, I'm going with PA this week. Replacing the leaf with a Xbox controller, funny stuff, funny stuff.

The PA is even funnier once you realize that the latin in the last box actually reads "Until all are banned"
