I truly despise Capcom's DLC practices this generation.

SFIV costumes are on the disc.

Mega Man 9 Proto Man and difficulty mode.

Resident Evil 5 - removing versus mode before launch then releasing it as DLC

Lost Planet 2 - cutting content to use as DLC later on

Not to mention after every release they just re-release their games a year later. SSFIV, Lost Planet: Colonies, RE5:Gold.

At least EA seems to be doing the opposite approach others should follow... reward your early buyers with free DLC and incentives right off bat.

what EA is doing is just as bad by hurting people who buy used games, rent games or borrow them. And every one is ignorant enough to say "free DLC on day 1 YAY!" that DLC is locked out by a unique code so all they're doing is locking you out of content you already purchased. So if you buy a EA game used prepare to pay $15 unless your fine with playing a game striped of content.

I agree with everything except the re-released versions. Thry've been doing that for 10+ years, With Resident Evil: Director's Cut, the various versions of Veronica, etc.

Hurting people who buy used is fine by me. The only people who make money off used game sales are gamestop and ebgames. They also have terrible practices and really dont deserve the money to simply recycle games over and over.

Day 1 DLC that is free is fine, whats so wrong with rewarding those who bought your game FIRST and who bought it NEW?

You actually enjoy seeing RE-released games "GOTY edition" "GOLD Version", where new buyers get the DLC you had to pay for and new content and all for way cheaper than you did? When you were a first-day buyer who supported a game company right off bat?

@Solace

That's exactly WHY EA is doing what they do. Remember that they don't get a cut of any used game sales. I can't blame them for that kind of tactic, when there are stores like PawnStop that offer $20 for trade-ins then re-sell them for $55, right beside the $60 brand-new copies.

At least most of EA's DLC isn't essential. You aren't really getting a crippled game if you don't, say, have access to the Cerberus Network in Mass Effect 2. What Capcom does is just bullshit, since this stuff is already on the disc or included in the download. You're just paying for unlock codes.

I keep hearing about this "Day 1 DLC" but all your getting is what you paid for, what dont you get about that? Oh and if it wasn't for the used games market then people wouldn't buy new games as often as they do because most of GameStop trade in incentives revolve around trading in games to pre-order NEW GAMES.

But let's say a large portion of a game was locked unless you bought it new, then trade in values would drop which wouldn't allow gamers to get as much credit as they would have if it wasn't. Then developers would cry even more about how badly their games sell looking pathetic as they do now by abusing DLC and ripping gamers for buying and trading in games used.

two maps in BFBC2 will be locked if you rent or buy the game used, and so will ME2 DLC. Though it might not always be essential it's still taking away from my game experience, especially for a game like BFBC2.

My brother is getting BFBC2 new but if I can't access those two maps on my PS3 because my brother redeemed it on his EA account making it impossible to game share the DLC I am never buying another EA game again.

@ Solace

See my second paragraph. Mass Effect 2 feels complete as it stands, without any DLC. Had the Cerberus Network stuff not even existed, I doubt anyone would complain. This isn't a large portion of the game. It's some new items and side missions. I'd agree with your complaints if a significant portion of the game was locked, but that simply is not the case.

I don't think GameStop trade-ins drive the sales of new games, either. It is, in fact, in GameStop's best interest for people to keep buying and trading in used games as much as possible.

Will EA's "Project Ten Dollar" cause a drop in used game prices once people realize the additional cost of getting access to the DLC? Sure. Is this a bad thing? Not at all! This just means that GameStop won't be able to stick used games on the shelf beside the new copies for $5 less, meaning that the used copies won't be competing as directly with the new copies - which is exactly what EA intends.

I dont agree that you are necessarily "getting what you paid for". Unless you have definitive proof you can't be sure of that.

RE5 versus mode WAS removed from the actual release, the mode was featured in the official strategy guide which was printed months before game even released.

All the Mass Effect 2 DLC so far has been free. And the newest ones coming out in March is also free. Was all that stuff supposed to be in the actual release? I doubt it. And even if it was perhaps possible that it was stripped from release... am I at a loss for getting it free anyways? Not really.

Solace, if used game trade-ins drove new game sales like you're trying to say, then why have we been seeing a greater than usual number of quality studios closing down and laying people off? During a period of time that the video game industry, as a whole, has been setting seeing record sales numbers?

An unsustainable balance of those sales have been lining Gamestop's pockets and we're losing too many good game developers because of it. More power to EA for promoting a legitimate way to drive new game sales and getting some of that money flowing back to the companies that use it to actually develop something.

In BFBC2 you'll be locked out of TWO multiplayer maps if you buy the game used. That's enough content for me to say FCK you EA.

"I don't think GameStop trade-ins drive the sales of new games, either. It is, in fact, in GameStop's best interest for people to keep buying and trading in used games as much as possible."

So how the hell is GS going to get trade in for new games? You argument makes no sense, GS isn't going to have 20 copies of a new game used the first week of release. They HAVE to sell NEW games in order to get those trade ins back, that's why they have those trade in incentives in place for pre-ordering new games.

Solace, if more companies followed EA's footsteps, Gamestop will probably be seeing a surplus of new games being traded in due to increased sales of new copies being bought for Day 1 DLC. Prices would lower with more of those games in the used market, so if you factor in paying for that DLC on a used game you'll be paying roughly the same you are now. The difference is, with DLC sales, EA actually sees some return on those used game sales and Gamestop doesn't get to afford to be as greedy with the difference between trade-in credit and used sale prices.

@Solace

The games market is not a closed, retailer-specific system. GameStop is not the only games retailer in existence. In fact, they sell considerably fewer games than Walmart. Thus, they aren't really required to sell new games in order to eventually receive used trade-ins.

Also, you don't seem to understand the reasoning behind pre-orders. The incentives are there to pre-order a game for two reasons: first, they just love it when people give them money before receiving a product - that's basically free money for the weeks (or months) before the product actually arrives. Second, they use pre-orders to figure out how many games to stock. They don't like having a lot of new copies sitting on shelves, and want them sold as soon as possible So they tend to order only enough games to fill pre-orders and a couple extras. Expecting people to trade them in is not why they do pre-orders.

I'm sorry ... but saying that Super street fighter is a "re-release" only proves that you knows NOTHING of the game =P

10 new characters (TEN !!!), new stages, 5 new online modes, 1 new ultra to each character, new costumes to every character, bonus stages, something like 20 new hours of anime cutscenes, 2 or 3 new rival animations, no need to unlock characters, balancing .....

Well at least its not like ubisoft that they sell you the true ending of a game

When playing games with any multiplayer component, unlocking things is just a hassle. Of course, some games have dealt with that in creative ways, like Brawl (multiplayer matches unlock hidden characters). Other games, like Mario Kart Wii, still senselessly force you through countless single player circuits of idiotic comeback AI to unlock everything. I answered that by downloading a save game the second I brought the game home.

JohnnyToxin: Oh, come on. EVERYTHING is extras nowadays. Fable II was crammed with distractions, there are all kinds of mini-games and unlockable characters in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and Grand Theft Auto IV was crammed to the gills with bonuses (even if the game itself stunk). If anything, there are too many extras in video games, taking the focus off the core gameplay.

The concept on unlocking is still there. The difference is that instead of using your skills to unlock something, you use your money.

Sad, but true.

This generation of gaming is killing me. I'm totally psyched to play as Bass in 10, I can't state that any more clearly, but it would have been a good move on Capcom's part to make not only the look of the game retro, but the spirit as well. Not that they didn't milk Mega during his Classic phase, but DLC didn't exist. I've never actually bought DLC before, so we'll see how it goes.

I've begun to hate DLC, but I have to admit, I thought Endless Mode was awesome, and will submit to their ways in order to enjoy it again in MM10.

The funny thing is, I'm not against DLC for the same reasons as everyone else, but rather, I just don't see it as being worth the time to bother with usually. With DLC episodes, you're usually getting something that's too short to be awesome, with few exceptions, like the GTA DLC. It used to be that you'd spend $40-$50 on a game like Quake 2 or something, and if you wanted more, there would later be an expansion or two for $20 each with some new weapons, enemies, and a slew of extra levels. The DLC like in RE5, or especially Fallout 3, it's usually so short that I just can't care about it that much. Sure, you're getting enough for your $5 or whatever, but is it really worth your time to play $5 worth of content after playing the whole game?

I'm curious as to what these extra stages might be. Seeing as "stages" in classic Mega Man games were pretty only ever for a robot master, or as part of Dr. Wileys' castle, i don't know what extra stages could be added that would actually be beneficial to the game/story, and not just tacked on afterthoughts. If they involve extra robot masters, i'm all for it then, because i've already beat Sheep Man this afternoon so more new robot masters would be swell.

In MM9, the extra stage DLC was a time attack stage. I mean, they all had time attack modes, but this level was clearly made for time attack. I agree though, unless they were tacked on to the end of the game, I don't really care. I never even beat that extra level in 9. It was tough.

Eh, I find it hard to get all riled up over it when the game is only $10 to begin with. They could have bundled it all together and charged $18 for it and I still would have bought it.

Mega Man 10 already has more content standard than Mega Man 9 did. Stuff that was extra in 9, like Proto Man and Hard mode, and new stuff, like challenge mode.

Street Fighter IV's day one costumes can suck my dick, though.

I just want to know when this will launch for the other two systems. There aren't any benefits for having both Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 on the same system, are there? I've got Mega Man 9 on the Wii but can't get online with the system now... no wireless points or Ethernet adapter.

11th on PS3, 31st on 360. There's no benefit to having both on the same console, except I get all tingly whenever I look at them next to each other on my Wii menu.
