Amid the roar of Call of Duty news today, Activision has confirmed that Treyarch's next entry in the series will be released this fall. Assuming Activision adheres to its thus far rock-solid Call of Duty schedule, a November release seems likely. Whether or not the series will make the rumored move to Vietnam remains unconfirmed.
In other unsurprising Call of Duty news, Activision has confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 DLC will consist of multiplayer map packs. The map packs were more or less outed last year, thanks to some loose-lipped energy drink packaging, but Activision hasn't actually confirmed the exact nature of the DLC until now. The first two map packs -- slated to appear first on Xbox Live -- are in development at Infinity Ward. Assuming initial plans haven't been altered by the executive shuffling, the first pack is scheduled to release this spring, while the second is slated for a (presumably later) 2010 release.

Let this be a prime example of why Activsion will keep winning and winning, and why their treachery will keep on living.

Yup, you're right: Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is a step backwards from Modern Warfare 1.
As opposed to them, this new Vietnam Call of Duty sounds promising.

Pass. I did play WaW but they just don't compare to the IW cods. I played 4 for the whole time till MW2 came out and I'll be playing that till MW3 drops.

A longer campaign would be nice though. COD 4's campaign was longer than MW2's and when I played it, I never wanted it to end. Actualy, I thought a double campaign would be nice. TF131/Rangers/Seals and Spetznaz/Op For/Shadow Company. Sadly, the game developers aren't really thinking that far into the game. Hopes for MW3!

Agreed cod4 campaign >>> MW2 campaign. But I think there are much better single player games out there. I really just like the multiplayer, kick back with some friends, play a few games, nothing beats it.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if they greenlight the Vietnam setting, I will happily burn every Activision game I own. It wouldn't be a Vietnam game without a spit and slur dodging mini game for serving your country.

It will be L4D with a single forest map filled with hunters and nothing else.

With all of the developments today there are now TWO reasons I won't be buying this game:
-Shitty Support for PC Platform (Assuming it's anything like MW2)
-Activision is run by asshats.

Treyarch are shit, they have no knowledge of decent A.I. and should be stopped from developing any more COD games before they ruin the entire series. The grenade spamming in COD: WAW was ridiculous and made it one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I have ever had. I wont buy another of their games. All COD games should be developed by Infinity Ward in future.

I don't think that Call of Duty is oversaturated. There's a new call of duty brand game once a year. It's not like guitar/band/lego games that come out multiple times in the same year. And it's not like WWII games that were coming out multiple times in the same year.
I personally love Infinity Ward games. And I don't confuse a non IW game with an IW game.
But I do think Treyarch did a great job with World at War. It was based on the Modern Warefare engine, which yielded a solid game with great maps. Speaking of maps, I think Treyarch did a excellent job with not only releasing DLC maps quickly, they added new game modes which made World at World a stellar game. C'mon Nazi Zombies? Plus there was a lot of maps released.
Infinity Ward doesn't seem to release as much DLC at Treyarch, but when they do it is high quality. I would just love to see more DLC from IW. I can never get enough COD maps. It keeps me playing, and although I haven't grown tired of MW2, I wouldn't mind if new maps were to come out about now.
If the next Treyarch game is based in Vietnam, then it's not even in the same genre at the Modern Warefare games, which is yet another reason why I don't think it's over saturated. They keep the games distanced in that respect.
Hey speaking of MW2... any chance we're going to have another double XP weekend anytime soon? I miss those...

I agree, Kidhero. Nice to see there are some people who aren't sheep out there. What can I say... I found WaW multiplayer more fun than MW2.

I'm pretty surprised that Activision is releasing so many COD games considering that they expressed concern over their revenues being too dependent on Guitar Hero, COD and WOW. Guitar Hero is already suffering and they are now trying to deploy the same Guitar Hero killing strategy to Call of Duty? Really? They want to expand into other genres? Do the different divisions of Activision not talk to one another? Do their accountants not say there's a huge risk if one of their three tentpole franchises suffer? Do the marketing people not look at that and say, you know what can keep the franchise healthy, more Call of Duty branded games?
I work in marketing, and I work in business and sometimes it makes sense to saturate a market, and other times it doesn't. When your business is dependent on essentially three products (despite selling dozens) and one of those three is showing signs of decline, its high risk to put another of those three in a situation that can put it on the decline.
But that's just me.
