Eurogamer's resident supernerd at Digital Foundry has weighed in on yesterday's global PS3 meltdown, cleverly dubbed ApocalyPS3. While early reports seemed to indicate PlayStation Network was at fault – "playstation network down" was a top Google search term on Sunday and Sony itself continues to pin the blame squarely on PSN – it became increasingly clear that the issue was unrelated to the console's internet connectivity and instead related to the console's internal clock. If this sounds suspiciously similar to the Z2K bug that suddenly bricked thousands (dozens?) of 30GB Zune players in 2008, it's because both the PS3 and Zune share an ARM CPU chip, says DF. This is presumably the same Freescale processor blamed for Z2K, a chip that happens to have a known problem dealing with leap years.
According to "unofficial community-compiled lists" cited by Digital Foundry, eight out of the eleven "fat" PS3 SKUs were affected by the faulty chip, easily totaling millions of units. If the problem wasn't resolved quietly (perhaps too quietly, considering the dearth of updates on the company's Twitter feed) and relatively quickly by the inevitable march of time itself, Sony would have been tasked with repairing millions of affected consoles; a burden exacerbated by said console's inability to connect to the PlayStation Network.
Lucky for us, and infinitely more so for Sony, at 0000 GMT yesterday, PS3s the world over suddenly figured out what day it was and everything went back to normal. All that's left to do is hope that Sony issues a patch to prevent the next apocalypse. (Isn't that the one in 2012?)

Some of you dont seem to get it.
The reason it hasn't happened before now is simply this:
Every even year the Ps3 thinks it's a leap year. THe PS3 is now in it's 4th year, 2 of those years were even, and one WAS a leap year so the bug obviously didn't occur.
It happened this year because it thought it was a leap year and it is not, thus system failure for whatever reason.
The next "ApocalyPS3" is not until 2014 based on the same math, only one in every 4 years could this bug possibly happen. Now I wonder if sony will bother to ever fix it or just leave it be.

What this means is that we'll get shafted out of a day of gaming every 4 years thanks to this faulty chip.
Sony should sue the manufacturer of the chip and use those proceeds to do our repairs.

Meh. Might be time to consider dumping this 60 gb with BC for good and get a slim.
What are the YLOD rates on the slim anyhow? Substantially lower than release day 60 gb systems?

The problem is that is that it may seem like a minority issue to you, until you're the person that's affected.
Paying $150 for what was already a $600 console, is still a bit exorbitant. Especially when it's presumably a design issue on a limited segment of 60 gb SKU's. Why should the owners in this circumstance be responsible for covering the costs of a design flaw? And you're aware that if it happens again, those of us affected have to pay yet *another* $150? It hasn't happened to me but there've been isolated cases where people did get shafted like that.

You don't get the overall look of how small the percent of failure is. (http://digg.com/playstation/Store_managers_detail_PS3_failure_rate_at_less_than_1) Don't get me wrong though, in theory if there are 32 million PS3s sold worldwide, and 1% of that should be 320,000 units defective. That's a lot. TBH the idea that there is even 1000 defective PS3s is overwhelming to me. But don't let you inhibit from buying a PS3, YLOD is not too much of a problem :P I say you should keep your old 60 gb though. Its still the most valuable one in light of this internal clock bug. There still people on ebay selling the old 60 gbs for $200 plus!

What I want to know is the mechanics of how some trophies got wiped out entirely...Not that they're important, but at least any other errors mights be preventable with a better understanding.
All my Heavy Rain trophies are gone, even after popping in the game and re-syncing.

Someone above said their Uncharted 2 trophies didn't appear right away after re-syncing... but they suddenly all reappeared after playing for about an hour. I've heard similar reports from other places. If you haven't done so already you may just need to play the game for a while.

^ that's true too; I didn't get around to playing any HR yesterday, so the full outcome remains to be seen.

for what it is worth, my AssCreed2 trophies were gone (no entry for the game in my list) since I tried to play it during "the event." syncing did not bring them back. Starting the game brought an entry but with 0%. However I read elsewhere that getting a new trophy recovered them, so i dumped 5 bodies in some hay (fastest trophy for me at the time) and they all came back! hope this helps!

Syncing your trophies may not work. I played some heavy rain on saturday (when the shit went down) and earned a few trophies. Upon checking things last night, I lost all the tropies I earned that day. Re-syncing them could not bring them back from the nether.
I was at 50% on saturday and am back down to 36% heavy rain trophies.. Could be worse but still kinda shitty.

It's a good thing the game is enjoyable. But I'm sure trophy whores are kind of pissed, since they have to replay that loop again to re-attain that sequence.

So the price of backwards compatibility on my 20GB is the inability to play games on leap years? I'll call that a fair trade...

"burden exacerbated by said console's inability to connect to the PlayStation Network."
You can still download firmware updates and game patches even without a PSN account.
In fact, during the middle of this crisis, I booted up Tekken 6 and was prompted to download the 1.03 patch on my fat PS3, which would not stay signed in to the PSN (as the error said I was signed OUT of PSN, implying I had signed in and it booted me out instantly...).

The PS3. "The system that does everything!" Except play PS2 Games, and go from February to March. Idiots.

"ApocalyPS3: 8 out of 11 PS3 'fat' SKUs affected, PS3 shared Zune chip" is a title abortion. It made my eyes hurt just scanning it.

This was/still [?] Blown Out Proportion So Bad, lot of "gamers with another console of choice which is not a PS3" were screaming "da doomedz", I don't know what happened to them, cuz today, they just Disappeared...

I don't think there's much of an issue, it must be something with the timing clock, and in this case it cannot process the leap year in February and that's why the issue seems to have all of the sudden resolved it's self on March 1, 2010.

i'm happy my PS3 was at my friends house for the few days that the ApocalyPS3 was happening. none of my friends were affected either. guess we were lucky

I would say that the RTC(Hardware Clock) is responsible cause I was playing Assassin's Creed II last week and the PS3 wasn't even connected to the Internet, I hadn't even set up the clock or Internet settings but yesterday morning boom it didn't work at all. Until in the afternoon when I tried the 2/28/2010 11:59:59am trick and now it works fine. So it's more of a hardware glitch than a software glitch.

The PS3 doesn't have an ARM chip in it, this explanation makes no sense.

How can the next "apolocalypse" be in 2012 when it's a leap year? Thus it won't be affected. The next time it will happen is 2014.

If no fix can be delivered, I guess some PS3 owners will just have to abstain from playing for about a day each year, until all timezones have gone into March 1. It's almost like observing a religious feast or something.
