A lot of developers have earned publishing deals with Sony this generation, but only a small handful have managed to deliver a real "blockbuster." (Sorry, Lair and Heavenly Sword.) Three million copies, two million levels, and one Game of the Year edition later, Sony Computer Entertainment has decided to purchase LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule. The Guildford-based studio will join the ranks of other SCEE teams, such as London Studio, Guerrilla Games and Evolution Studios.
While Media Molecule is no longer an independent studio, Michael Denny, Senior VP of Sony Worldwide Studios promised to continue supporting the team: "Media Molecule will simply continue to make great games. Welcoming Media Molecule into the PlayStation family will allow us to better support their future titles and ambitions."
The acquisition likely guarantees that Media Molecule will continue to work on the LittleBigPlanet "platform" for years to come -- although we hope SCEE allows the team to explore creating new franchises as well. Of course, considering the ambitious plans the team has for LBP, it seems Media Molecule will have their hands full for quite a long time.

Sony, buy Insomniac and you'll have yourself quite a dominant first party line up :D
They should have snapped up Polyphony, Level 5 and / or free radical while at it.
Thats not because I want to see more games form these developers exclusive, its because I personally feel I get more enjoyment out of those exclusive titles as they are produced better, most if not all of the favourite games this gen have been exclusives. I think its just because they have more time and funding and resources and assistance to distribute towards the one console rather then worrying about multiplat and different onlines and different achievements, delays upon delays.

Not that I'm aware of :/ Aren't Polyphony independent, they just have a good relationship with Sony, thus the reason for exclusive GT games, but they could go multiplat if they wanted to couldn't they? That would explain why Sony can't nag them to hurry up a bit more.

The very first line of Polyphony Digital's Wikipedia page is as follows:
"Polyphony Digital, Inc. is an internal video game developing company of Sony Computer Entertainment and is part of SCE Worldwide Studios."

Ah well, all the better ey ^^ Poly was the only one I was uncertain about, they should definatly pick up the other three. They have a good enough relationship to do so.

Not bad, it would have been nice to see their games on other systems, but that's the game of the console wars, each company wanting to secure their own properties, games and franchises.

Sorry, I'm gonna rant now.
damn it nerdydesi. You just don't get it, along with everyone who repeats that same bullshit. It's not simply about more consoles, more people get to enjoy it. It's also about quality.
When a game becomes multiplatform, the development time has to get divided up between the consoles. That's why Final Fantasy 13 got so gimped. It barely has anything that made past Final Fantasy games memorable (exploration, side quests, etc.) FF series was moving forward with the gameplay design with FF12 (although I didn't like that story much), but made a complete 180 with FF13. I'm sure you and many others can still remember the original Final Fantasy 13 gameplay trailer with Lightning running all over the place kicking ass. Compared to what could have been, FF13's current gameplay is garbage. I'm sure it can still be addictive, but nothing new at all. In fact, it looks unbelievably tacky. That gameplay design was most likely cut, NOT because the 360 couldn't handle it, but having to make a port on the 360 must have taken up considerable developement time, which includes the time it took for SE to develop an engine that would allow them to port the game. It was just too ambitious for a multiplatform game.
FF13 just as an exclusive was going to be a big enough and time consuming project. Of course major cuts have to be made when you add another platform to the mix. Most of the PS3 owners were disappointed about losing FF13 exclusivity not only because they didn't want to share the wealth. It's because realistically, the quality of the game would have to be compromised when making it for additional consoles. Considering the type of open world this game could have had and all its content, it also doesn't help at all that the other console uses an older generation storage medium. It could still work, but that will also take more time. The same can be said about 360 exclusives that may not play or look as well had they been multiplatform. Look at Alan Wake. It only took them 6 years? Imagine how that pretty game would have looked going multiplatform with the same development time.
I think you get my point. Development for one console, regardless if it's your console of choice would always result in a more polished game. Please don't bring up the exceptions to the rules, like Lair and that Free Radical game I can't remember the name of.
Sorry for all the grammar and spelling errors.

This is a brillant move on Sony's behalf. This "Create, Play, Share" genre is becoming 1 of the many goldmines for Sony. Especially w/ Arc releasing later this year, LBP will be 1 of the games to support the new motion controls.
LBP and PS Arc controller could be the "next big thing" for casual gamers...

Focusing games around user-created content is good, and is something very forward thinking, but if every game was like this, I think people would be spread too thin between them to deliver the goods for all of them.
It's like how every game has multiplayer now. Except for the triple A titles, it's hard to find people to play with in the others.

Thus the reason it isn't being overly used to wear off the novelty, the onlyy games using it atm are the kart game Sony is releasing and LBP. For those who like to create, its the perfect opportunity to feel like a developer.
Saying that, people were making mods for Unreal Tournament, its not really a new concept, its just been made easier, so I don't know why its suddenly become an issue.

"The moneyhatting joke (and beef) was about purchased exclusivity, not so much about buying studios."
Isn't that basically what buying independent studios is? Do you think they would have bought MM if they hadn't have created LBP? I doubt it.

Marty you're talking out your arse.
Of course they wouldn't have bought Mm if they hadn't made lbp, the same can be said about most studios being bought, they're bought because they are good companies.

Hopefully Sony can lend a hand in adding some developers who know how to execute tight platforming. I loved the way LBP looked and bought it day one. But man oh man, the game play feels like a complete and utter after thought. What a waste. LBP is the Emperor with No Clothes. And the massive pile of stickers are useless.

I don't think QD produce enough titles though, as innovative as they are I would rather they re-used some assets in order to make more games.
But I suppose going 1st party could expand their studio so I suppose it could work out.

I really wouldn't be too surprised if we see this happening down the line at some point, when Sony see a third party game stand out from the mist, they generally try to buy them, evolution studios, Naughty Dog, Guerrila and now Media Molecule. I for one hope Song gives Mm a nice new studio too, since the videos i saw of their studio while making LBP looked like a flat above the local chip shop.

Right. So in some ways, buying a studio is indeed buying all the related IP. That's not talking out of my ass, it's just common sense.
