While we're happy to see any new media related to Metroid: Other M, this new trailer isn't doing much to build excitement. Here's a short list of Metroid standards missing from the video:
Samus's suit
Metroids
Weapons
But on the other hand, it has:
The catchphrase used by the annoying AI guide that nobody liked in Metroid Fusion
At least, now we know we'll be able to skip the cutscenes between the awesome shooting sequences.
Damnit guys I know Metroid is about exploration and atmosphere and I love that, but you seem to be forgetting why Samus is in this business. Though she's a bounty hunter she's not in it for the money and she's certainly not a "badass" who goes down into planets to beat everyone up. You're projecting onto the usually silent protagonist what you yourself want to be, Samus is doing it on the one hand for closure over her parents' deaths (Her Mother I believe was murdered by Ridley in front of her but I'm not sure about this, and her Father took one of the Pirates' ships with him by detonating the fuel gel they were stealing from her planet.), and on the other because no one else can do this, she has no choice. Given the loss and violence in her life, if she's the kind of person who actually wants to be doing what she's doing, then she's in all likelihood mentally unhinged, and certainly not the kind of person we think she is. I know there's a lot of scope with a story to mess it up, but if you aren't willing to welcome and at least give the plot a chance, well...it may as well be the Doom marine guy behind that visor for all you must care about the character.
Personally I did not find the IA CO in Metroid Fusion to be that annoying, and I thought the whole former connection to Samus thing was a nice story element. I look forward to seeing how that relationship gets fleshed out in Other M.
I just don't know how I feel about Nintendo fleshing out Samus or have a big bloated story in a Metroid game. Seems very anti-Nintendo and anti-Metroid. Thought I'll still give it a chance and probably like it for what it is.
