Tecmo Bowl Throwback was first revealed through a trusted Joystiq source back in January (and then subsequently popped up in an ESRB rating), so we weren't exactly thrown into a tizzy when Tecmo released the official announcement today. Throwback will be released on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this spring. As previously understood, the game will be a remake of the SNES's Tecmo Super Bowl and will feature an option to "switch to the classic 2D style."
Developed by seasoned remake studio Southend Interactive (Lode Runner, R-Type), the game's main new feature (aside from "all new 3D graphics," of course) is online play. Today's announcement additionally revealed Throwback will feature 32 teams and online leaderboards and customizable options for teams and rosters, and ... and ... whoa, whoa, it's almost like we're talking about a simulation football game here! Relax -- sorry about that. Try to cool down with the screenshots below.

Effing sweet. My NES is starting to die on me (it's been a good 24 years) and I love the heck out of this game.

The more complex they are the more things that can go wrong with them.

gotta take care of them a bit better since they do have much more inside them... A NES really is only made up of a couple very basic components where as an Xbox has lots of much more complex (and delicate) things inside them....

As long as quarter long Bo Jackson style runs are still possible, this is a day one purchase.

Kotaku posted screens of the new look, and I hate to have to post a link to Kotaku but the game just looks so great that I can't help it:

I am leaning toward there being no NFL license either, which is a bummer. I agree 100% with Sarge - there was just something missing from Kickoff (DS) because the team names, logos and jerseys were all funky.
What would be truly awesome would be if it was a TRUE remake, using the same rosters as Tecmo Super Bowl, rather than updated ones. Never happen, but would be awesome all the same.

Blah its the SNES Tecmo Super Bowl version...rather have the NES Super Tecmo Bowl version. No chance of having original teams tho. Even though you can name them and such, still will not have the logos unfortunately. Also, did you see the logos they let you choose from in the DS version...wow, all 10 of them or so was pure shit. Still a day one purchase for me...hopefully it is much better than the DS game.

I can't recommend this game if they are using made-up teams and made-up players. I was truly excited when I first heard, but after seeing those pictures this is a no go.
