It's not that the first screens from Shinji MIkami and Platinum Games' Vanquish look bad necessarily -- far from it. It's just that ... well, they look a little common, don't they? We've flipped through that gallery below a few times but couldn't find an image that got us even a little more excited for the futuristic shooter than we were yesterday.
It wouldn't be so bad if that first trailer for the game hadn't seemed like such a breath of fresh air. Oh well, these are just a few still images. Let's withhold judgment until we see it in action, hmm?

Not sure I'd categorize these pics as a *yawn*.
The video grabbed my interest and while these screenshots don't scream of originality, they do show great visuals, melee combat and what looks to be some great shooting action.
Not necessarily proper use of screenshots in a marketing sense compared to video but it does "look" like it'll be a high production, action-packed shooter with lots of particles and blur effects.
It's at least "on my radar" now because if it plays as good as it looks, it should be good for a rental.

well unlike tribes not everyone is going have jet packs... also when did Bungie ever claim they were reinventing the wheel? they did that in 2002 and have been tweaking it ever since.
adding jet packs doesn't make it a ripoff of tribes...if it does, well then having guns in the original halo makes it a ripoff of Wolfenstein? your logic is flawed.

Let me get this straight, Justin says this doesn't excite him because its not a breath of fresh air, yet makes no such distinction on the Halo Reach video when it is clearly looking like "Tribes" in Halo skin.

A Tribes skin? That's a little reductionist, don't you think.
So let me check your math: JET PACKS = TRIBES. One to one?

So whats you're point? Still doesn't change the fact that neither this nor Reach MP seem to bring up anything new that hasn't been done before, yet all praise for anything Halo and this gets a meh from Justin.

@chris, dark void had jetpacks and looked nothing like Tribes, as soon as seening the jetpacks in Reach and how it plays INSTANTLY brings up Tribes. So no its not the jetpacks its how the game now plays using the jetpacks that makes look just like Tribes.

@Blight, you must be a Halo fanboy if you can't see the clear comparison between Tribes and how it is shown to be used in Reach, only at least in Tribe you could play with up to 64 people and that was over 10 years ago.

I hope you're not one of those people who plays COD and thought Modern Warfare 2 was one of the greatest things ever. I'll never understand those people. They buy the game because the multiplayer is the greatest thing ever, but don't seem to realize they've been playing the same damn thing for years. Year after year. At least Halo isn't an annual series. At least Halo Reach multiplayer looks substantially different than Halo 3. Reach isn't trying to revolutionize the genre, it's trying to revolutionize Halo, unlike COD where the guys at Activision say "Well, people are willing to buy this crap every year so let's just stick a new name on it!"
And for the last time, THOSE ARE NOT JETPACKS! They've been in Halo for the last two game. Elites had 'em. Brutes had 'em. They're jump packs. They don't grant you unlimited flight or anything like that. They'll probably just propel you either up or forward. The only new thing is that YOU get to use them now. Sometimes. In a limited fashion.

But seriously, I posted this yesterday:
I fail to see where the jetpack is considered central to Halo: Reach's gameplay in the video, which makes me wonder why some people here are comparing it to Tribes.

@funzunga, I don't think MW2 is the best infact the best part of MW2 is spec op though it would have been better with 4 people instead of just 2. Also IW never claimed that MW2 MP was going revolutionary or doing something "risky", if Bungie considers copying Tribes as "risky" then they really haven't done much to deserve all this praise.

Yeah, I don't get all the frothing at the mouth by commenters saying Reach is Tribes now. It looks exactly like Halo 3, but with jetpacks. So is Halo 3 exactly like Tribes but without jetpacks? I don't understand how that single element makes a leap to 'ripping off Tribes' or essentially being the same game.

Angry, just how are they "copying" Tribes? In the entire 1 minute and 34 seconds of the Reach video, there are maybe 3-4 instances where the jetpack is being used. The MAJORITY of the video clearly shows multiplayer being played WITHOUT the jetpack. So please, tell me how the hell you came up with this brilliant conclusion as to why Bungie is ripping off Tribes.

He's saying the jet pack is what makes it a rip off of tribes. I can't say I agree or disagree with either of you. The reach video felt like section 8 which batman always reminds me is a tribes rip off not a halo ripoff, using that logic I would lean towards Reach being heavily inspired by tribes . . . perhaps?

@ Captain: Im not saying that all off Reach Mp is a ripoff, I was complaining that Justin said this was not a "breath of fresh air". Just yesterday he said nothing about the Reach video when it clearly is nothing new other than the jetpacks which has been done by Tribes and didn't make a snide remark. In all fairness I am more interested in the SP since they seem to be heading in a direction I feel is better and should have been done since the beginning.

Actually angry, you pretty much said it was copying Tribes twice. And, for the record the Reach video showed off a cubic shit load of BRAND NEW features, weapons, gameplay, etc. Some of which was CLEARLY and quite LITERALLY spelled out for you. IGN was so nice to give us a nice little video highlighting some of the new sexy we can look forward to...

I love Shinji Mikami so hopefully he can prove me wrong on this one.

It doesn't look like anything groundbreaking but, being a dude who loves shooters, I am still interested. If it plays well and it looks nice and the story is interesting, it can still be a good game - even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel. Story and setting can go a long way in a game like this to make it unique, even if the gameplay itself looks pretty standard.

Amen to that...if we all went by the "Same genre = Ripoff" formula then gamers would've stopped enjoying themselves decades ago. Gameplay-wise, I didn't consider the first Halo (or the subsequent ones) to be all that innovative, but the story kept me going through all the sequels...and no, even the story wasn't that original, but the characters were engaging.

Speaking of the original Halo, perhaps it's a bit more fair to say, "It didn't reinvent the wheel, it just made it rounder."

At the very least the screens look like they could be a PS3 game. They don't glaringly look like an Xbox game in the same way Bayonetta did/does. Maybe we'll see some semblance of parity on both systems this time. That's really my biggest concern. That and having no interest in these types of games at all.
