Man, we hope your hearts are wearing some light, loose-fitting clothing, because they're about to get warmed. CNN recently aired a video report on mild-mannered Roy Williams, a young man whose love of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is surpassed only by his love of doing awesome, considerate things. Like, for instance, playing Ocarina of Time blindfolded, and writing a guide on how to play the game by only using sound clues, so that a visually impaired gamer living in another country can topple Ganon's tyrannical reign.
Transcribing OoT in this manner took Williams and "three other diehard gamers" two years, but allowed Jordan Verner, a blind gamer living in Ontario, to finish the game for the first time. If that doesn't make you just a little verklempt, then you probably have robot parts where your heart should be.
[Thanks Kevin!]

I got misty eyes just reading it. Sniffle. Makes you wonder about the future of gaming.

This is what the gaming community needs - more people willing to help other gamers enjoy their experiences. It's also incredibly interesting to hear that these guys used sound only to beat OoT. That's a task in and of itself, but to do it for the sake of other players who want to enjoy it...that's really awesome.

That's quite a feat. Now I feel even worse about giving up on OoT after 2 hours because I didn't know what to do.

This just made me think about Heavy Rain, would probably be the easiest game ever to beat blind. Even if you fail the QTE's, the story still advances.

Hurray for helpfulness!
I've always wondered what it would be like to be a blind gamer... because damn, if I lost my sight, I'd be pretty sad that I wouldn't be able to play games... though I could spend that time to learn an instrument...
Originally I was just going to ask my gf what the hell was going on in the screen while I was playing, but I get the feeling that would've gotten me MURDERED in a ton of games (no offense hun! You just...don't play like I do).

WOW!! Why not take the blind guy to the grand canyon or get him to watch all your favorite silent films next?

Dude, a blind person can still enjoy a game they can't see.
They can easily be transported into a book with their imagination much like anyone else, except they use audio books.
A blind person is able to understand the concept of a story, react to the sounds of battle, become lost in a maze, be aware and be scared of cliff edges, and still feel satisfaction in victory.
Gosh darnit, that's like saying a Deaf person can't enjoy a movie because he/she can't hear the musical score.

And I'm not saying they cant.

Yes they are.. don't really need to hear the click click click of an N64 controller to do that though.

Coudnt he achieve a lot of this buy going to the grand canyon or watching silent films though? Why cant they enjoy these things too?

Blind people don't play video games. That's why they are called VIDEO games, because of the video involved.

Give it up idiot, blind people DON'T play video games. Just like they don't take pictures or read magazines.

Blind people also don't drive cars or ride bikes.
But they sure as hell WANT TO.
They tried making sound games, and mosta' them sucked.
If a person can enjoy a video game much like listening to an audio book (aka: being transported into a storyline except this time: playing it), then WHY THE HELL NOT?
Just because a man loses his teeth doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to enjoy the food he used to enjoy.
It's called "working around things".
Unless the blind gamers report "Meh, it wasn't fun", stop acting as if there was nothing they gained out of it.

That guy deserves and award of some sort. I hate to be the kind of person that tells people what to do but I feel like maybe joystiq could send in some swag to both parties involved. This is what gaming is all about. No matter what game you're playing, no matter where you are, it will always boil down to enjoying the experience we get when playing video games and to extend that experience to someone who is incapable of doing so is an achievement worthy of true recognition. we could all learn from this, especially the politicians and critics who say "games are a bad influence!" Could such a bad influence breed kindness, ingenuity and dedication like the given example?
No.
To the group who endured the selfless act; Bravo, you are legit.
To the blind kid who beat the game blind; you are teh Hax0rz...hope your mom can read this to ya..

Just because you still live with your mom doesn't mean he does. Blind people may not be able to play video games but they can live along.

831 Son: you're right, I should rephrase...."I hope your mom/friends/whoever can help get my comment across to you can express my congratulations to you if they so choose". Although in my defense I'm sure the world is tough as it is being blind, however it can be tougher when a handicapped person is not treated the same way everyone else is. It's demeaning to some so we shouldn't assume to shelter them from our experiences e.g. "joystiq comments" just because we think its in their best interest.
aang1818: Really?!....I applaud what was accomplished and the first thing you do is flame on me? Am I the only one that feels he should be congratulated? How do you know he lives alone? How do you know I don't live alone? How do you know anything? Did I ever say he was living with his mom? Don't presume to speak about anything without knowing something first.
Unless you know him personally, you shouldn't try to drop knowledge on me and his living situation and unless you know me personally you shouldn't assume I live with my mom or that I'm as uneducated as you are. I don't need to explain myself but it goes to show that you were unable to understand the message I wrote so go ahead and reread it again. If you still feel like I "live with my mom" then congratulations you are a "Ra-tard"

I can not even imagine how difficult this must have been for the
creators of the guide, or for Jordan to actually do.
Speaking as a die-hard OoT fan who has spent *way* too much of her
life playing it, I can appreciate how desperately Jordan must have
wanted to play the game. I can only imagine how craptastic it must be
to want to play games so badly and be visually impaired.
I think it's beautiful what these guys did for him. I know a lot of
people who would argue it's a waste of time, that it's just one video
game and why should it matter....why dedicate their time to this...
But I think dedicating their time to something that is, in the grand
scheme of things, so small to others, but so huge to this one person,
is a great, great sign for humanity and where we're headed.
The gamers shall inherit the earth :)

More power to him, though subjecting a blind fellow to the ear-bleeding reality that is "HEY! LISTEN!" seems like some bizarre and twisted form of punishment.

Kudos to the guys who created the guide and to Jordan for completing OoT. That must've taken a hell of a lot of patience. Kind of reminds me of this kid. http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/disabled-gamer-mods-controller-wins-at-life/
Makes you wonder what other games could be created for the blind though, particularly since there are a lot more blind people since the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm guessing that since there are some pretty good text-to-speech programs out there, along with Braille displays, the good old Text Adventure would be an ideal candidate.

Not that those are the only options - between things like Natal, Eyetoy, dance mats and Balance Boards, there are plenty of options for controlling games beyond a joypad or mouse and keyboard. It's just up to developers to come up with some way of using them for disabled gamers.

I am happy the blind man was able to play the game. Everybody should play it at least once in their lifetime; and now they can even despite physical limitations that would normally prevent such from happening.
