Crystal Dynamics has announced its first new game since the completion and launch of 2008's Tomb Raider: Underworld. Set to debut in 2010, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will see the roadworthy leading lady come to undisclosed platforms -- via download.
It wouldn't be the first time the posh pot-smasher and exotic animal extinguisher stars in a downloadable format, as Tomb Raider: Anniversary was digitally distributed in the form of Tomb Raider: Legend DLC on Xbox 360 before getting a regular retail spot. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, however, is a standalone title that Crystal Dynamics GM Darrell Gallagher hopes will defy expectations.
"This is a really exciting project for Crystal Dynamics, we have created something completely new and very different to what people might be expecting," he said. "Lara Croft is such an iconic character in videogames, with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light we have created what we believe is a truly original digital experience."
We expect to catch our first glimpse of the game at next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, along with an indication on what else Crystal Dynamics has in store. Since the studio is staffed for two projects, we can't imagine this being the only Tomb Raider game in the works. The other one might even have "Tomb Raider" in the title.

Its la not lo. If u read the legend guide the french say laura, lara. She was suppose to be laura. They need to make this new game for retail too. Some people don't find it comfortable to play on a computer.

Okay let's get real here. Tr1 was the best game. Except I didn't like the bloody levels at the end. Tr2 was good at the begining, lara is a tomb raider after all. I also didn't like her being bet with clubs all the time and to many of thoughs guys to have to kill all the time. Tr3 was pretty good cronicles was good except when she went back to being young. the last revelation was good. I didn't like being in egypt the whole time though. Legend was good except she looked like a monkey jumping around and it was to short. The graphics could have been more colorful and less guys to have to kill. It was also to easy to find your way around half the fun of the game is trying to figure out what's next. Anniversary is really a good game but again I don't like somme of the end.

I'm still waiting for a Tomb Raider that was inventive as the first. Legend was pretty good, and so was anniversary, but Underworld was a punch in your dick courtesy of Eidos.
Eidos, get your shit together.

I agree wholeheartedly. Anniversary and Legend were pretty decent; they were enjoyable rentals for when I wasn't purchasing truly amazing games like Orange Box, Bioshock, Mass Effect, et al. (Underworld was crap.)
Competition is fierce, Eidos. If you want me to spend more than $10 on your product, you're going to have to make a game with a good story, solid gameplay, and for the love of god, more than 6 hours of playtime.
Here's a hint: I haven't bought a Tomb Raider game this generation; I've bought 2 Uncharted games in the last 3 years.

I agree. If the next Tomb Raider game isn't AT LEAST as good as Uncharted 1, Eidos just needs to give up.
Lara's looks aren't the reason the game doesn't sell as expected. Everyone loves her big breasted. It's cheap review tactics to cover up spotty game play/design.

Okay,so does it matter what any of us thing. Does crystal dynamics ever see these comments so they can give the fans what they want or are we just talking to the air. I know that times change but game consoles are the best to play on. Your t.v. how ever big it is and also however comfortable you can get while you play. Sitting at a computer for hours at a time is no fun while your trying to battle monsters and do acrobats. Its hard enough to us a hand head controller let along having to use just your finger with a bunch of other keys in the way. Well that's my oppinion.

Wait, are you saying you pronounce "Laura" and "Lara" the same way? I was under the impression they *don't* sound the same. I.e., "Laura" sounds pretty much like "lora," while "Lara" has an open 'A' sound, as in "ah." Isn't that correct?

I'm a big fan of Tomb Raider, but I'm still mad at them for not bring Underworld's DLC to PS3 (yet?).
I hate this whole DLC exclusive, a game being exclusive it's one thing, but DLC?
TR was always on Playstation, PS3 Underworld's even without the DLC outsold the X360's version. I hope Eidos have learned their lesson this time around, because people were pretty mad at their forums about this exclusive DLC back in 2008/09.

The lesson that was so many complains about that. They (Eidos) were tired of complains, they kept posting comments like "sorry, but there's nothing we can do" or "you are still getting a great game".
I don't expect you to understand, because you clearly aren't a fan. This whole DLC exclusive are crap for gamers. Why Joker wasn't playable on Batman's X360 & PC versions? Why the PS3 copy of Dante's Inferno it's the collector's Edition and it's not even optional on X360?
Yeah, I don't like when this happens even if on PS3's favor, games should be equal.

If you like pludering tombs, shooting dudes and puzzles there is apparently this other game on the ps3 that is ok. I hear the second one is pretty good too...

Yeah exclusive stuff is pretty crappy. But sometimes it's a matter of time and money, perhaps for the PS3 DLC they had no time or money.
I know the Dante's Inferno stuff wasn't nothing to miss out on. If anything, the Divine Edition, is just an attempt to make PS3 users think they're getting something special so they buy the game instead of waiting for God of War 3.. which they should since DI wasn't very good.
Batman's Joker thing... well yes that's as stupid as the GTA4 stuff.

In my ps1 days, Tomb Raider was one of my favourite series. But things change and I hate to be "that guy" but go and play Uncharted 2 and then Underworld. Granted it's a year older but I think even the first Uncharted is a better looking game. Not to mention that the controls are so dated, I mean they are really bad. I hope whatever this is turns out to be fresh but my hopes won't be too high.

I agree that TR legend and anniversary were goos md games. Anniv.camera views were sometimes weard. Otherwise it was good. Legend was to short. DLC is not for me. I would prefer to be comfortable when I play my games. I would also prefer a controller apposed at a key board. Hopefully they will change there minds and go retail. I have been waiting for a new TR game.

Sounds like an iPhone/Pad game to me.
Then again, if they wanted to really go mass market they might not have dropped the iconic Tomb Raider name.

I'm not a fan of the DLC idea. call me old fashion but I like having a physical disk, now if I could burn the content from xbox to a disk I'd be okay with that.
but my real dream, if they are going to use DLC is a Mac OS X release...I know won't happen but I can dream can't I ?

I also require a physical disc for anything other than arcade style games. However the industry is doing everything in its power to make physical discs just as worthless as downloads should they decide to pull the server plugs.
Its a sad state of affairs knowing that games i'm adding to my library right now might not be playable in 20 years unlike all of the games I currently own from 20 years ago which can never be taken away.

Anyone else think they should just lt Naughty Dog make the game? It would be exponentially better than anything Eidos could produce at this point.

Yeah thats true. It would still be awesome to see what those guys could do with Tomb Raider ... maybe Drake could make himself a cameo.

Am I the only person out there that's entirely fine with the fact that Tomb Raider is Tomb Raider and Uncharted is Uncharted? No? Some of us would still like the choice between peanut butter & jelly instead of having to in a store and see the shelves stocked with Goober.
There's enough damned homogenization out there as it is. As long as they manage to keep Tomb Raider fresh and interesting, count me in.
