According to Gamasutra, a recently released report from the NPD Group claims online gaming increased by 10 percent in 2009. Furthermore, the number of games purchased via digital distribution increased by 20 percent in the same period, marking a 19 percent increase over the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of gamers that play online decreased by 2 percent. The overall increase in online gaming was the result of gamers playing online longer -- an average of eight hours per week, up from 7.3 the previous year.
Breaking it down by platform, the PC sees the most use overall with 85 percent of PC owners playing online. Among gaming consoles, the Xbox takes the online cake, with 43 percent playing it online. The PS3 and Wii both tie at 30 percent, though it's worth noting that PS3 online use is up 10 percent over the previous year.
The question has to be asked: What are all those Wii owners playing? There can't be that many copies of Mario Kart Wii out there. Oh, wait ...

Well if you into account of the people who cheat and talk trash (trash talking dosen't bother me) a lot of people are getting tired and just take a break from online gaming.

Actually, according to the post, the NUMBER of people "cheating and trashtalking" is DOWN by 2% over last year...just the ones that are left are playing longer (8 hours a week this year compared to 7.3 hours last year). So, the original post was correct...some people have taken a break from playing online.

So the amount of 12 year olds online has increased by 10%? Damn, that's a shame.
All jokes aside, this kind of concerns me a little. It's okay that online gaming is big, but I don't want developers to get distracted enough with multiplayer to have it interfere with single player development.

That is a great opinion you have, but you my good sir, do not own all 4 systems. You're supposed to BUY games for your PS3. They don't generate games on their own.

Although I'm not going to say that the PS3 has no games. I am going to say that Xbox live and PS3 have different audiences. Xbox live is good for people who want an online gaming identity for play with RL friends and meet new online friends. PS3 is good for people who just want quick free online play with RL friends or to play with more strangers.

Because we all know that movies based of video games are great. The positive thing about the graphics in games getting so great is that you don't need a movie adaption to get a realistic "movie feel".
But seriously, troll much?

wow, i'm quite surprised that the ps3 and wii see about the same amount of online gaming. i've always figured that the ps3 was relatively more single-player-centric than the xbox, but to the same extent as the wii? the ps3 gets multiplatform versions of all the major shooters that probably comprise 90% of all online play, so to see it tie with the wii is....odd, to say the least.

As opposed to the xbox 360, there are people that buy the PS3 for functions other than gaming. You have to take that into account, that some people are only using it as a movie player or media streamer only.
Microsoft does not have those kinds of consumers buying up 360s. Xbox 360 is synonimous with gaming and online...and little else. I'd be more surprised if they WEREN'T the leaders in the online space.

I have been playing games my whole life, and my PS3 is as much a media-player as gaming console, if not more. Even my mom bought one for the Blu-Ray player and Media Server capabilities.
And as you say, Microsoft are software developers, they should be superior on the online component. Sony are hardware developers, and makes quality hardware.
And the priced product should always in theory be better than the free product.

i can't really speak for a larger demographic since there isn't any data, but for myself i can say that gaming only comprises maybe 50% of what i use my xbox for, if even.
-talk to friends (i literally use party chat as a replacement for a phone among those friends who own xboxes)
-streaming television shows via play on
-watching my downloaded divx and xvid .avi movies via my external HDD
-netflix instant
-stream my music library via last.fm or from my laptop, depending
all these things add to up about as much time as i spend playing games on my xbox if not more, and admittedly i didn't even know about any of this stuff when i bought it. i have to hand it to sony, though, they've done a far better job than microsoft in advertising their console as "more than" a gaming system.

Yeah, even though I don't have an Xbox, Netflix sure looks tasty. and it can stream from media-servers, so it's not as bad either.
But I do love my PS3, wish they would get Netflix to Norway as well. Since Microsoft soon will be able to.

Does Wii have an online mode you say? Hmm.. I've had one here for months, but I have yet to discover this online multiplayer component on this white box.
Sounds exciting!

You must not have noticed because you didn't need to buy an add-on to get internet working.
You're missing out. There's lots of good content in Wii Ware and Virtual Console.

Internet Sarcasm fail, I am sorry, should have made myself a little more clear.
I am well aware of the online component, VC and WiiWare, many fantastic games there, but i am rather unsure about the online _multiplayer_ component. I mean Friend codes? Yeeesh.

I'll agree that friend codes suck hairy goat nuts. But random matchmaking still works on Wii as well as it does on XBL.

@Broken: Agreed, it's important that people realise that online play on Nintendo is technically fine... provided you limit it to random matchmaking. And provided you don't mind that with said random matchmaking, there's no communication possible between players.
I am also pretty shocked by the 'Wii = PS3' thing here, though. As the article says, Mario Kart online was great, and I'm sure some people still play it (I played it for months but not now). Other than that the proportion of Wii games with a fun online component is really low. I mean, I also played Excite Bike online for a bit, that was good. Tetris Party is fun online as well, so I do play that occasionally... er... and... yeah.
I kind of wonder if they're using some interesting way to count - like, the 'percentage playing it online' might either (a) include things like downloading WiiWare (in which case I'm not surprised Wii is doing OK because WiiWare is great), or (b) be a 'have you ever' sort of thing (in which case, who hasn't played Mario Kart online), or something else...
But if none of that applies and it really is true that the same percentage of Wii owners as PS3 owners have played an online multiplayer game within the past month (or whatever), then yes, it's pretty surprising.
(I'm a Wii owner, and no I haven't played an online game in the past month, nor am I expecting to do so in the next one; in fact I'm not aware of an upcoming game with an online component that interests me...)

@Sam: There are actually a number of retail and Wiiware games with online play:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_Wi-Fi_Connection_games
It's not great, but it's not that bad, either. I'm hoping that Monster Hunter Tri is huge and changes the online scene even more for the Wii. Unfortunately, few of the big games coming to the Wii in the first half of '10 will have online play.
Still, I play a lot more online with the 360, but I think that's largely because the people I game with the most only have 360s.

I think we are all ignoring the real issue here. Why is no one out there publicly outraged over the Brokeback Cowboy of Persia game? How could the have butchered the recovering series so badly. I loved PoP 2008 and while I have fond memories of Sands of Time the following two sequels RUINED that "series." What is with this statuesque western caucasian Prince? Why the hell is there a western-world style orchestrated score? I mean atleast with the terrible Disturbed soundtrack songs from the second or third one (I try not to remember those dark times) you could tell they weren't trying but to hire an orchestra for a professional score and just.. do it so wrong is mind boggling. Eh, it's like a knife in my heart. Atleast with PoP 2008 it had a thematic soundtrack and storybook style that works its way into the title more or less. Well get ready for Farcry 3, with an underwater early american pioneer theme.
