SOCOM 4 announced for PS3, Zipper developing

Hot off the release of MAG, Sony has revealed that the game's developer, Zipper Interactive, will be returning to the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs franchise for the development of SOCOM 4 on PS3, slated for release this fall.

Unlike the Slant 6-developed, online-only SOCOM: Confrontation and Zipper's own MAG, this new SOCOM will include a full story-driven, single-player campaign comprised of 14 missions that the dev expects to offer around 12 hours of gameplay (according to IGN). Of course, the developer's experience on the excellent 256-player MAG will undoubtedly be carrying over (in as many ways as possible) to the announced 32-player online component of its new project. Only 32 players? (We kid.)

Infamous 2 and Uncharted 3 wouldn't be a surprise sequal, we all know it's coming. Socom 4, on the other hand, is a suprise. Personally, I was hoping for the sequel to Warhawk.

This really was a surprise; I don't remember anyone guessing Socom 4. And though I think this games gonna be awesome, I was really hoping for a new Medievil. Am I the only one out there that really wants Medievil 3?

Starhawk would be nice, as would a new Jak game or a surprise Killzone 3 release.

I think thats coming in the form of "Starhawk" . . . if the reports are to be believed anyway.

In terms of a surprise sequel I would prefer a new Sly Cooper over a new Infamous.

Starhawk is coming....my guess it it will be announced at either GDC or E3....

This is the surprise sequel?! Socom 4?! I was hoping for something a little better. Something that would be worth me getting surprised. Instead, this just disappoints me. I feel that Socom 4 can also be called MAG-Lite...both of which I can do without.

MAG lite? Have you played a Socom? The Socom series on PS2 and PSP has one of the most dedicated fanbases in PS games, this news just excites Socom fans, confrontation came across more to me as a beta test then a real Socom game, so this news is as great as it gets, I can't think of anything better. :D

This is the news that starts my spring break! Thank you Zipper! I think I might drop off a cake personally baked by me for you to say thank you for taking back Socom.

Great news. Good to see Zipper back with Socom. MAG was great, but it just wasn't as good as Socom IMO.

I was surprised by the "this fall" timing, too. I guess they've been working on it in secret for some time, no announcements having been made in order to not steal any hype from MAG. Still, I'm inclined to believe that some of the technology, maybe even some assets, must be coming from MAG for the release to be this soon.

Yes! It's about time! I was so disappointed when SOCOM Confrontation was multiplayer-only. I LOVE the SOCOM series (and I'm not even that big a shooter fan).

Did you miss the part where it said Zipper was back in charge and not Slant 6?

Also I think I speak for quite a few people when I say: It's about damn time!

To be fair, his confusion is understandable. The last one had a terrible launch and had the same name on the box. The last developer contributed to tarnishing the name and that isn't something Zipper can fix till this is released.

Third person 32player sounds interesting.

I'm terrified that this game will try and be like MW2's "story".

I haven't played any of the other SOCOMs as I wasn't into shooters back during PS2 days but if the previous ones weren't like that then I doubt this one will be....they don't want the MW2 crowd but they want to keep the SOCOM crowd and the loyal SOCOM people wouldn't stand for that

I hope you're right. "Full story-driven, single-player campaign" in today's modern shooter genre really lends me to believe otherwise.

I know they didn't develop Confrontation, but I really hope they work on the "vote-to kick" feature in Confrontation. I had way to many rounds where people would vote me for no reason. I mean, I almost got voted out once when I was dead, how? I wasn't even doing anything!

Yea, that's what I hate. I've never played L4D but in Socom it's just annoying. If you don't play with a clan or use a mic you're pretty much the first person to get kicked out of the room. If they had someway of detouring people from kicking when it's not needed it'd be great.

Too bad I only run OS X then :(. I'd rather have to find a good server than be stuck dealing with the people one can be stuck with in matchmaking.

If you are alive and you get voted once then that means turn around because your about to get shot in the back.

Yea, I know that; I was always confused about why I was getting voted lol. My problem is when the round starts and not even five seconds in, someone yells out "Vote this guy out, he's a team killer". And then I'm quickly voted out without even have team killed. Or some guy voting me out because I died, or someone voting me out for making a mistake. People will find anyreason to kick in SOCOM, I don't know what it is.

Oh wow ... this is fantastic news! MAG is an amazing game and I'm sure this new SOCOM will be as well.

I don't know where these guys get all the energy. Great news. Hardcore Socom fans must be rejoicing.

And I was beginning to think PS3 wasn't going to get console of the year in 2010.

No, now it's locked up. ModNation, Socom 4, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5.

The Last Guardian, and the rumored releases of Resistance 3 and Killzone 3.

Not to mention other rumoured releases like Starhawk, Twisted Metal, Syphon Filther 5, Motorstorm 3, unnanouced Insomniac Project etc. This truly is one of the greatest years in gaming. The 360, Wii and PS3 all have tons of great exclusives, and I know the majority of us here hate it, but if it weren't for Modern Warfare 2 I don't think we'd have all these games.

Its difficult to keep up with all these top rated games :/ Its not like the PS3s birth where big games were hyped and fell flat or were mediocre, now its one kick ass game after another, I dont get a chance to breathe >.< ack!
