SOCOM 4 announced for PS3, Zipper developing

Hot off the release of MAG, Sony has revealed that the game's developer, Zipper Interactive, will be returning to the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs franchise for the development of SOCOM 4 on PS3, slated for release this fall.

Unlike the Slant 6-developed, online-only SOCOM: Confrontation and Zipper's own MAG, this new SOCOM will include a full story-driven, single-player campaign comprised of 14 missions that the dev expects to offer around 12 hours of gameplay (according to IGN). Of course, the developer's experience on the excellent 256-player MAG will undoubtedly be carrying over (in as many ways as possible) to the announced 32-player online component of its new project. Only 32 players? (We kid.)

I hope this game is good cause I really liked MAG. I don't who out there agrees with me but MAG is a great change of pace to the Lag-switching, Care packing glitching world of MW2. Makes you really feel like a war going on and you don't have to be afraid of NUKES. Because I've liked MAG some much I might actually give this game a shot. Never really played any of the other SOCOM's, so we'll see.

We still need to group up together. I have been playing acquisition a lot lately . . . was playing supression to get a good feel for the combat and now I'm just rolling with ACQ. The game is so damn fun, I'm addicted like it's an illegal narcotic.

Indeed. I've never played the other SOCOM games because they never really interested me. THEN, I bought Confrontation and I'm still haunted by nightmares. Of course I soon came by the information that it used to be handled by another team, and that would be why it was so terrible.

MAG is great and I can't believe they were making MAG alongside SOCOM 4. They said they were going to continue supporting MAG and I'm going to keep playing it. Maybe now they will hurry up and announce some DLC so I can spend the $10 I've got.

I don't know what to say. They said "surprise sequel" and I was thinking R3... And then they shove SOCOM 4 in my face. I still haven't been able to pick up my jaw.

But you know whats sad? Zipper was developing two games at once and are still going to make one hell of a game... Slant Six was only making one and it turned out to be really bad.

I'm serious though. I'm stunned by this news. How could they keep this a secret when it is so close to release? Crazy excited though!

Great, so long as this doesn't take too many resources away from MAG updating/DLC. I'm not really a SOCOM fan, but I'm loving MAG, and as great as the game already is, it's got incredible potential for updates and DLC.

Do you guys really think the Last Guardian is going to come out this year? Like, we haven't even seen gameplay videos yet...

Nah, I think it'll get a Fall-Winter release date at E3. Then by August/September it'll get pushed back to Spring '11.

We haven't seen gameplay videos or even heard about Socom 4 until now yet that is coming out this year.

correction, they "say" it's coming out in the fall.

It's sony. and as much as I like them... everything gets delayed.

Even though it's gonna be good (Zipper will be developing this game) I just can't commit to another online shooter. Now if the game has Co-Op in it's campaign, then it will be a purchase for me...I think nowadays Online Co-Op is equally important as Competitive Multiplayer.

It's not an online shooter. It's a 12 hour single player game with multiplayer.

All is left is Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal.

i've been playing this series since i was 13 and i've been waiting for this day since 2005 and it's finally here. a next gen socom by Zipper that stays true to its roots

Thank god they're going back to SOCOM. The last SOCOM was a disappointment, and FPS is not my cup of tea (seasick).

SOCOM was the only reason I bought that network adapter for the PS2.

Socom 4 including things they've learned from making MAG? Sounds great.

Well that was unexpected. I mean, another Socom game this year? Not that surprising. But Zipper working on MAG and Socom 4 concurrently and getting both out in the same year (if just barely)? That's pretty surprising to me.

Between this, and potentially Resistance, Twisted Metal, and LBP, this could be one hell of a holiday season for PS3.

I hope it has co-op if it is going to have a "full" single-player game. I'd love to get a couple of my brothers together and run through a level, flanking like there's no tomorrow.
