The problem of input latency is something that keeps popping up in coverage of Microsoft's Project Natal. It's something we noticed when demoing Natal at TGS last year, something Microsoft promised to address before launch. Apparently, certain outlets are still noticing latency issues, which has prompted both Microsoft and Peter Molyneux to come to the peripheral's defense. The comments come in response to reactions from a recent event held in London for non-enthusiast press.
Speaking to GI.biz (account required), Molyneux noted his "frustration" at seeing the press use a version of Natal that has since been "exceeded many times over." Said Molyneux, "So very often you get a position that what a person's looking at is two, three, four months, a year old and you kind of want to go, 'no, no, it's 10 times better than that!'" He added that there have been "countless" revisions to Natal's camera and software since X10, which was held just weeks ago. Furthermore a Microsoft source told GI.biz that the unit demonstrated in London was "one-tenth as responsive" as the current revision.
Microsoft doesn't have any Natal presentations planned for GDC next week, but maybe, just maybe Molyneux will show us how far the peripheral has come during his panel on intuitive game design.

Well since the guy that is trying to sell people on this product says it is awesome it must be true.

So let me make sure I've got it. You're trying to get people to buy this new device, and you're sending out old, glitchy units to the press, which is the only place people will be able to start drawing conclusions from.
Brilliant, Microsoft. Why don't you send Vista to people who want to review Windows 7?

He said, "since X10". Meaning, that Natal has received many software updates in the past three weeks.
Even then, It makes sense that the X10 version would be the most stable version they have at the time to show it to the press not necessarily the latest.
This is the problem inherent in showing off new technology like this as the final product likely won't match what we are currently seeing.
Still, Molyneaux made some pretty bold claims here that had better be backed up by the time E3 rolls around.

Well most software products get nightly builds although being a more technical project than most, I assume this to be less frequent. Since LionHead is part of the same company & Peter their head honcho in Europe(for gaming related stuff, I think) I assume he gets access to this stuff at the same time as the code passes automatic testing.

But! Can Molyneux defend the fear his horrible "Fable" series instills in us...?

You mean that horrible game that was Joystiq's 2008 Game of the Year?

Yep, "that" game I guess. I can understand its an opinion, but I've yet to see anyone actually explain why they like the game.
The combat was dull as dull could be, with it revolving around spamming time stop lvl 2-3, then using head shots with the generic rifle. The moral choices you make ultimately don't affect the world the way Molyneux even began to describe, and the story itself is decent until the very end where it just shits all over itself. Hell, the dream sequence alone was one of the worst parts of the game.
Ultimately the ending you choose affects nothing, since the dog is given back to you with the first DLC they released, and once again does little to actually differentiate the game afterwords.
And god, don't get me started on the "co-op". How hard can it possibly be to code in free action for the unlucky "merc" character the 2nd person has to become? Why are they forced to watch the main one do his blacksmithing for an hour, or stare at the ground? He also spoke about how the secondary character could influence the other's world, yet I haven't seen any proof of that yet.
Yeah yeah, I know, Molyneux is king of spouting shit. Yet its ironic how people will bash him one second, then vote down whoever talks crap about his games faster than the time it took to want to kill Toby.

Ooooooooooo.... Joystiq gave GOTY to Fable 2 in 2008. Who cares? It is obvious they can't even handle any game that gives them even a little bit of challenge. The game was super easy, a glitchy mess, and was 8 hours long. Instead of focusing on making it a good game, they focused on making it a life-simulator.

You guys do realize that E3 is a few short months away right? I'm pretty sure Natal will be very close to it's final, retail form with an official name and all the whiz bang software people are asking...erm...hoping for.

why oh why do they give the press old versions of their hardware?

Oh, well now all my fears are put to rest... Peter Molyneux would never over deliver.

Molyneux needs to learn to shut his mouth once in a while. It's too bad that his legacy in gaming won't be the (mostly) great games he designed but his ability to promise X but deliver 1/8 of X.
Just focus on the game and please leave the marketing to someone who knows what they are doing!

I dunno... until it's released I'll hold my opinion on the technology. I'm highly interested to see how this and 'Arc' will turn out. But there's no doubt in my mind, it'll get revised, tweaked, improved, and changed until it finally goes into production.

I don't know anything about the difference between X10 and the current NATAL peripheral, but if it were ready, it would be out by now. So obviously there are issues that need to be worked out.

Yeah right Mr. Molyneux since you havent ever lied about pretty much all of your game products. Why should we believe you? Yeah many moons ago you had great games but that time has come and gone good sir. I doubt the big M will fix this considering, they really dont care until you buy it and complain. I am definitely not buying NATAL.

After his promises with Fable 1, I'm a little skeptical. I certainly don't like the idea that Natal is now using the console's CPU rather than its own internal processor. Personally, I'd rather pay a little more and have it do its own number-crunching--but I'd be waiting for the reviews either way.

1/10th of a second is still too laggy to get a headshot
Posted: Mar 5th 2010 6:29PM armageddon said
Even if it has a 1/10th of a second delay at launch that isn't an issue really cause it will be a while yet before you'll be getting "head shots" and even then it wont stop you. Fear mongers are stupid, they don't understand the new technology and so hate it and begin spreading fear.

Natal is such a waste. You would think that Microsoft would put their money on games, and in-house studios. Nope. Instead they screw over Ensemble, didn't allow Bungie to make a game that isn't halo, etc...
Microsoft is going to fail hard this year. Other than Reach, the line-up looks abysmal. On the other hand, you have Sony who is actually doing things right with their exclusives.
Natal and casual gamers can go to hell.

I know the topic of "exclusives" come up often on these boards and that I know you really meant to say "console exclusive" but most of those games I can play or will be able to play and I don't have a 360. So to me, they are not "exclusive" in the proper definition of the word.
Crackdown 2 is exclusive because I can't play it ANYWHERE else. I agree with most of the other people when they say that Microsoft should have invested in first party developers instead of going down the casual road. Natal should have been saved for a full launch of the next generation xbox so that everyone would be at the same level. Peripherals never sell as well as the original. We've all seen it.
Sorry, all the Natal hype is getting to me.
