Haha, don't play the innocent victim here. You weren't downvoted because people were trying to shush your opinion. Your comment has the depth of a dewdrop. It's 8 letters. You didn't even type a full word. And you used FTL, which is almost as bad as SUX.

You can cry oppression when you type a well-thought paragraph as to why you don't enjoy a certain genre and people downvote you. If you're going to make pointless, trolling comments, don't act surprised or offended when they disappear.

Maybe you should read the EDGE review, they gave it a 5 out of 10! And, much of what they said I do agree with...

I'm sorry, but a 5/10 is COMPLETE bullshit. There is no denying that the game is polished to the core and is still an overall good game. That could be the most biased review ever, just because its not what they expected. If it didn't have "Final Fantasy" on the cover it would have gotten a much higher score.

I take reviews with a grain of salt. One person may love it, one may hate it. Until I try it my judgement cannot be made. Besides, being Final Fantasy, I am physically compelled to purchase it. Also, my fiance would probably punch me if I didn't.

Traceur, it seems the biased person is you. If it didn't have Final Fantasy on the cover, people wouldn't give a damn about the game. It is obvious that Final Fantasy gets concessions because of the brand name. 15 hours of tedium just to get to the interesting parts of the game? If it was any other game, people would write it off.

These opinions are no different than any other game. People will love it or maybe hate it. We're all entitled to that. Even with the idea of 15 hours of tedious gameplay doesn't put me off. So it all comes down to each player.

Wait. First you say great review because it is a review that you want to hear (because it is positive) but when a review that puts the game in a negative light comes out, you decide you don't care about reviews anymore.

This seems to happen to every game. The fanboys show the reviews as "proof" that the game is great, until a negative review comes out and they all of a sudden decide reviews don't matter.

I said great review because he took the time to go into details about his experience with the game. Even this review I take with a grain of salt. I am just commending the man on his review work. So let it be man.

EDGE magazine is literately the most biased worst review site I've ever seen. The 5/10 means almost nothing. That been said it does sound like this game wasn't worth the wait consider it's taken like 5 years. They shoulda just remade FF-VII, it sounds like Square has lost its way. That been said I'll still be picking this up for PS3 as soon as it drops a bit in price or I see a deal somewhere.

@FlipFlop

He wasn't saying it was a great review just because it was positive. It was informative, seemed free of bias, and gives the reader a good idea of whether or not FF XIII is right for them.

That's what I love about Joystiq reviews. Without some silly number to summarize it, your forced to read the review and decide for yourself if it's going to be what you want. Spike may have read the review and thought "I don't mind 15 hours of work to get to the amazing stuff. It'll be worth it." I thought "15 hours of tedium is too much of a time investment. Needs more shooting dudes in the face." Neither of us is "right" or "wrong," it's just the differences in people's taste.

Let's not discount the personality and likes/dislikes of the reviewer. That's why I always used to like the reviewer Bios done by EGM back in the day. Everyone has preferences, and reading a review by someone who's opinions line up more with yours then someone who likes things completely different is generally a much better review, since it will more likely fall in line with what you'll think in the end.

...although to be honest, I don't know much about the people on this site other then Yoon. I should study up.

@FlipFlop

I don't know about EDGE being biased or not, but I do believe they went into the game with a level of anticipation and expected something in particular from the game. This could have led to disappointment and therefor bias in the form of "this isn't what I wanted/expected".

Either way, I enjoyed my first 15 hours, knowing full well that the game wasn't going to be very open. However, I would also call people who take only the worst reviews as the "truth" as biased or at the very least thick-headed.

It could be that the EDGE reviewer didn't go in with any anticipationa and simply had a very dull experience. Either way, I thoroughly enjoy the game. Have a great weekend!

Echoing what JBourne said, give me one minute to be a kiss-ass. Joystiq is new to the review scene, but they have become by far my favorite source for gaming reviews.

The reviews are long without being boring. They don't get bogged down in technical minutiae. And they always give me a strong sense of whether I'M going to enjoy the game, regardless of whether the reviewer did.

These Final Fantasy fanboys are on full force today. Everything that Flip Flop had said was true.

You were fine with a review that gave the game you enjoy a good review. But the review that gave the game a poor review is all of a sudden invalid.

Replace the Final Fantasy on the cover, and people would call this game out for what it really is: another mediocre JRPG.

A lot of Edge's reputation is built on giving very conservative review scores, especially to hyped games (although the 10s they gave to Halo 3 and Bayonetta destroyed their mystique a bit). Plus their main criticism seems to be the battle system, which may well be the love it or hate it system some people have been saying it is.

The only united criticism I've seen is that the characters and story are a bit disappointing. But again, really down to personal preference.

Mediocre or not, the game is too big and beautiful not to give it a go.

After some looking into this I saw that Edge also gave Dragon Age: Origins a 5/10 which to me says they have no clue about reviewing RPG's to be honest. There opinion is worthless to me.

15 hours where nothing good happens is terrible game design. Period. There is no excuse to make that much of the game boring. I think 5/10 is justifiable if half of the game is garbage and the other half is good.

Luckily on the PS3 you can download saves from gamefaqs and skip the pretentious Square bullshit, which kind of tempts me to play the game if I can get it for free somehow.

The problem I have with the Edge 5/10 score is that Square really does put a lot into these games, and I think any other site could find a remake and re-release of FF12 to get at least a 5/10 right now (just off simple quality even without any mind blowing graphics). It just doesn't make sense to score it that low - unless they have issues with RPGs in the first place.

I haven't played this game yet - but I am damn sure that it is of higher quality than a 5/10.

This is why I love joystiq reviews. People come here and say that EDGE gave it 5/10, but nothing else. It is pretty much blah, blah, blah 5/10. You don't even read and the only thing you take in account is the score! That is just stupid.
And also after this EDGE no longer has my trust ( Not that it ever had, but now it is definatly not happening), I mean they gave this game such a bad score? How?? I have friends that played this game (japanese version) and they say it is one of the best FF of all time. I guess that more and more people just want a shooter with no content rather than a good game...

Well, being a new player to the Final Fantasy Franchise (I know, how?) I'm hoping that this game will be a... enjoyable experience.

From what's been said in the review I'm guessing the main problem is just it takes a while to get into the story and into the game..?

I guess the best FF game to play 1-12 to get you into the series would be FF9. Its the easiest of the modern FF's and lets you know just how these games are -supposed- to be in terms of length, side quests, story progression, and moogles. FF8 would be second best but they made some sttraaaange choices with the draw system and square button mashing during summon animations.

I really wouldn't use FFXIII to actually learn the series from what I've seen so far, I guess we'll see how that works out for Square.

God no not VII.
I hate VII, which also features a 15hr 30min crawl.

If you've never played a FF before, play IX or X if you can't go old school (but keep in mind X is quite different than any other one before it). If you can go old school, play either IV or VI...if you don't like either of those, you'll never like FF. IMHO those are the best games of the franchise, bar none.

VII took forever to get good IMO and VIII is just too weird. The ability to "steal magic" is one of the laziest ideas Square ever came up with.

hahke,

I feel that way about all RPG's. To get the best experience you really need to immerse yourself in the game. Many games have great stories, but it's really hard to jump right into things after only an hour or two hours worth of gameplay, especially, since in RPG's, 80% of the game isn't even directly related to the storyline.

So my advice is, don't jump in expecting to just be hooked for a 30 hour ride. That will never happen. Rather, take the story for what its worth, do some exploring, and take the game as it unfolds. That's true for any RPG, not just Final Fantasy Games.

Also, true for a lot of books too.

FFVII was a great game but its built up waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much. people talk about it like its god, 8 and 10 are just as good. 10-2 and 12 were the most annoying ones i played. 12 was just plain boring. and x-2 was annoying with the mission crap and then the fact that you had to 100% everything, even openening every chest just to get the true ending (continued from ffx)

It seems that if any other Joystiq editor reviewed the game, there would be a Joystiquitter instead of a review.

It seems that most of the game's length comes from tedium.
