Wait a moment... are you actually complaining that the game is too long?! Whatever happened to value for money from a gamer's perspective? Since when has an eight hour game from start to finish become a good thing? The 30+ hours which I hope to extend to 100+ hours playing this game in detail will be time spent having fun. I consider myself a gamer and as such I actually consider time playing games rather enjoyable, rather than a chore which is what you seem to convey in your review.

As far as linearity goes, it is true that the first X instalments had a rather narrow path with the odd few branches, but out of all the Final Fantasies, in my personal opinion and the opinion of many fans, XII just does not seem to deliver. Now this might be due to the shallow heroes or the new system, but going up against a level 99 monster when you just start the game is something I personally never really found fun. I mean do not get me wrong, I like breaking the game and creating godly characters from the start on consecutive play-throughs as much as the next guy, but the strongest element of the Final Fantasy alongside the graphics has always been the story (with character development and music coming in close) and excuse me for not being a mindless drone who just looks for fast paced action. I like the RPG genre due to the story aspect and I like to get involved. If I wanted free-form roaming, I'd be playing World of Warcraft or other MMOs which personally I believe will never leave the same feeling of nostalgia fans of 80s and 90s RPG games have... which can be said to be the true imprint of the game quality over time. If you want fast paced action, go with an action or a fighter game. Those are also good options for you to pick up and put down within mere minutes.

You write professional game reviews, yet you dig on a game for not doing what it was never intended to do in the first place. I do not mean to be rude and I do apologize if I have offended you, but you sir, need to rethink why it is exactly you play games and more so than that, if the RPG genre is the one for you.

XII is the pinnacle of storytelling in the FF universe, and I could go on quite long explaining why. The characters are not shallow (well, Vaan and Penelope are the obligatory player perspective characters), and the overall story arc does not have to rely on gimmicky plot twists to be engaging.

The game doesn't have to be a sandbox like what happens from chapter 11 onwards, but not letting you even have the slightest bit of exploration before the game is already basically finished is a terrible idea.

I joined this website just to say that this is a fantastic review. Informative and free of bias, I know exactly what's good and bad about this game without a goddam score at the bottom. Great work, Griffin

and after inFamous and littlebigplanet, and Resistance 2, and on and on and on. It sounds to me that they are 360 fanboys.

To ghen: instead of it being 15 hrs, it's more along 25 to 30 before you get full control of everyone. Well it was for me. I spent maybe a few hrs grinding a bit which kinda isn't neccesary. I finished the game in around 45 hrs, besting the final boss in under 2 min, 30 sec once the fight started. I personally thought this was an average FF. Just my opinion. And the only FF I haven't played is 11. Heck, i even own a copy of mystic quest. Haha. But everyone is different, so give it a try

If I remember correctly, tedium and Final Fantasy are synonyms. It's in Webster's Dictionary.

i'm going to pass on this ff title. the recent final fantasies haven't had the depth i like. redundant, predictable stories have replaced the gameplay i originally came to love :*( think i'll take my chances on some mist walker titles in hopes for another lost odyssey (they're still making games, right??)

Reviews are for the most part subject to a persons personal tastes, and if the reviewer feels the gameplay is unbalanced, or that the story doesn't "catch you" right away, I never really listen to those things. From one person to the next this may not be the case, as I've loved some games other people can't stand. All I care about is the stuff that isn't so much based on opinion, like if there's framerate issues, or graphical inconsistencies, or the details of the actual gameplay (i.e. Battle system, customization options, ect.). These are things that are what they are no matter who's playing and that's what ultimately matters most to me when reading a review. You pretty much know when you're interested in a game so you dont need a review for that. You need it to give you the facts, not some dudes opinion of why he loves it or cant stand it.

i just got the game this mornin a day before the UK release date, and have only played it for about 3 hours so far but the story line and graphics have blown me away! So allthough im still early into the game i definately think it deserves more than 5/10 but i do agree with the review it does start of a bit slow, and theres no charecter development as of yet, at the moment my charecters arent levelling up and it doesnt seem to make any difference if i run away from a fight or kill the bad guy.. you get like a points rating and a star rating but i cant see those points going any where and my charecters arent gettin any stronger. Plus the combat is very basic each charecter only has 2 moves a normal weopon attack then some sort of magic or explosive weopon attack. So yea i really do hope the game gets better because 3 hours in the combat is gettin a bit boring but the visual beauty and story line are just about keeping me entertained!

People need to stop bashing this game, I picked it up early on PS3 and its hands down the best JRPG of the generation. The combat is fast and fun, the story is very good and allows you to be as involved or casual as you want with it (extra info is presented via optional text logs). Trust me if you liked the PlayStation era Final Fantasy's the you will really enjoy XIII.

I just can't see the fun in a JRPG that doesn't focus around exploring a huge overworld. I wasn't really happy with X or XII because it felt so much like playing a game on rails. I much prefer FFVII/VIII/IX or Dragon Quest VIII for example. There's just something about trying to push the envelope and get to places higher than your current level, finding hidden characters and dungeons, coming across out-of-the-way towns and shops, or trying to find the perfect place to level up.

Hey, I'm the guy who STILL HAS every save from past FF games (VII - XII) with over 120 hours played each.

15 hours of tedium? I'm gonna make those last 60. And enjoy it.

This is one of the more informative reviews I've read on this game. I like that it's free of bias as well. It doesn't care that the PS3 looks slightly different than the 360. It doesn't harp on just the bad points and the good points. It just calls it like it is and it gives you a feeling that this game isn't for everyone. That's how reviews should be IMO.

I loved the battle systems of all thegames 10 and before, ff7 was my favorite, followed by 8, 4 was pritty solid

9 was good, but not as good as 8 or 4

10 was alright but very complicated.

x-2 sucked, no summons

12 started to bug me

11 not a true rpg

Hated non interchangble summons!

I want more SUMMONS! AND TO BE ABLE FOR ANYONE TO USE THEM!

reason why i like 4 is because the battle system and characters mix well and you feel for them and the battle.

Just bought it this midnight and played it 5 hours in. I do not really agree with the review IMO. The ramp-up time feels just like that of games like Final Fantasy X or VII, where you were given a little bit of freedom, but none like that of endgame. In fact, I feel they offer you enough customization after the 2nd hour in to really start planning how you want to plan your character set.

I think my favorite thing about this game, and why I (so far) hold it in such high regard is how it manages to *feel* like a Final Fantasy game, while giving us something new and fresh. There are your archetypal characters... but they are executed so well in a different manner that it does feel like a new game but worthy of the franchise name.

Just to give you an idea of whether you may like this game or not, I held FF3 (6), 7, and 10 in the highest regard. It plays very much like FFX more than any of them, and for me, that is a good thing. It also has archetypal roles for your characters in the beginning, but the system is flexible enough to give you some freedom in how you really want to create your character set.

Also, just an FYI, the character set is among the best I've seen since FFVII. I am finding myself very hard pressed about what characters I like the most, personally. So far... I'm finding it to be one of my favorite Final Fantasies, and depending how the rest shapes out, it may become my new favorite to replace FFX.

Hmm I like this review to be fair. I got the game today and I enjoyed it very much so far. I guess it depends on the player because I'm not 15 hours into the game as yet but I'm not bored either so I reckon Square did well to keep people interested.
I wouldn't use this game to newcomers of the Fantasy era though, even though it's good I still think it's necessary to play one of the previous versions before XIII (:

Good review though, first one I read!

Never buying another FF game again. FF is always a compulsory buy for me. Not anymore. If only I read the Wired review before picking this up.

I've played through about 3 hours, and I really really hate it. It's one track fest after another. The story is so dumb (WTF is a fal'Cie???) and no explanation for all the made up words.

Also, I realise I really hate Japanese games now. WTF is with the stupid cringe inducing cliche moments? "Heroes don't run from fights" "Heroes don't need plans" "Mums are tough" (spoken by a woman that looks like a school girl with grey hair) OMG I WANTED TO CHUCK THE TV OUT THE WINDOW WITH SUCH LAME DIALOGUE

I seriously hope the game gets better soon, or else it's going the same way as MGS4 went. Seriously, these Japanese developers should up their game soon, or they will go the way of the dinosaurs.

It's like any other FF game, or shit, any book. Don't expect everything to be spelled out for you right away. It becomes clearer.

I've honestly had no problem with the first 15 or so hours. It's "slow", but the building of the characters is still interesting, the introduction of the story is interesting and the battle system is built upon at a decent pace.

I'm a known FF hater and I've liked this game. Glad Blockbuster had it to rent on launch day.

Although it's a shame Squenix couldn't have evened out the pacing, I've been playing World of Warcraft for 4 years... my mind and body are now trained to deal with overwhelming tedium. I'm sure my girlfriend and I will love this game. Great review!

Lets just do the Math:
30 hours estimated completion time (minus side quests and wandering aimlessly)
subtract:
15 hours of shear tedium (a.k.a. crap)
(actually 20 in my case because for some reason I mistakenly believed leveling up would actually help...)
equals:
HALF THIS GAME SUCKS. And unfortunately it's all in the FIRST half.

I don't know about you all but for me the final word on whether a game is "good" or "bad" rests soley on the answer to the question, "Was it fun?". An entire generation played Mario Bro. until their fingers bled. Why? Because it had awesome graphics? No. Because it had cool characters? No. Because it had a deep involving story line? No. Because, in spite of it absolute absurdity, it was just freakin' fun? YES! FF13 isn't. After 15 hours of fighting the control system, being interrupted by movie after movie after movie, and basically being led around by my nose, I no longer cared when it finally opened up, and just let me PLAY. I think that Squaresoft was trying sooo hard to make the game feel cinematic, that they forgot they were making a GAME. I am reminded of the old adage, "First impressions are lasting impressions." This game now is used as a book end to help hold up the other games that actually enjoy playing.

(oh, and before you down me for giving up half way through: Yes. I finished the game. The end was nice, but it most definitely did not justify the means.)
