Huh? This has existed for a very long time. I remember back in 97, I played "Operation Inner Space" on my PC. I was able to play the full game for about 30 days and after that, it would revert to a demo, cutting off most of the ships, tracks, levels, and other content until I purchased and registered the game.

@ Brodo - They should go all the way and put the sanity system from Eternal Darkness in every demo. The longer you play, the crazier and less predictable they get.

This is much different then a full version becoming a demo. I interpreted this as, you download a racing game to try it out, and the more hours you put into it, the lower your max speed gets to the point where you can drive no faster than 5 miles an hour. This seems more like regular demos that expire rather than full games that become demos.

Oh yes, I remember DIVX. And the insufferable Circuit City commercials that went with it: "When choosing a new DVD player, make sure you choose one with DIVX." Why? So that I can use media that's capable of self-destructing? Oh yeah, I gotta make sure I have THAT feature. Pssh.

As for degradable game demos, I'll say but one thing: The entire idea is...

...Degrading.

Oddball/Joystiq was talking about the short lived DIVX (Digital Video Express) rental system, not the codec, DivX: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIVX_%28Digital_Video_Express%29

Now here's a bad idea. One thing you should never ever do is take content away from the consumer that you've given to them, and it sounds suspiciously like it could lead to something like subscription-based gaming, which is another one of those horrible ideas that many gaming companies have been pondering that need to be crushed right quick.

I don't like the idea. Demos are fine the way they are right now. You download test out the first level and then decide to buy. Why provide a full game which slowly starts getting worse it would just make it negative for the consumer.

@ Premature

Haha, I'm puzzled as to how exactly they would provide full games as demos without clogging up the gigabyte arteries. In theory, a full game for a demo sounds fantastic, but the more you just think about the technical aspects of all this, and the fact that they're "degradable"...it all seems a bit disastrous.

The question is: Why would Sony do this? They're in such a good position right now. They were, in my mind, the king of good exclusives last year, and their whole revisioning for the PS3 is spectacular. Why would they want to put themselves in this hole?

Sony has this bad habit of making some great strides and then also shooting themselves in the foot in the process. For instance, PS3 Slim + PSP GO.

That's horrible. Imagine you're trying a demo with guns:

10 minutes have passed, you can no longer use the M4 or rocket launcher.
15 minutes have passed, you can no longer use the AK-47 or grenades.
20 minutes have passed, you can no longer use your pistol.
25 minutes have passed, you can no longer use your fists.
30 minutes have passed, you can no longer move.

We hope you enjoyed our demo!

and to top it all off, you had a case of the runs and spent the entire demo sitting on the toilet so you didn't even get to play. That'll teach you to stay away from taco bell.

Bad idea. You want gamers to keep trying out the demo before they finally decide to buy the game. If you take away features, it just discourages them, leaves a bad taste in their mouth. What if they forgot how cool a feature was and now can't access it anymore because it was taken away by this DRM? Then they'll be turned off and not want to buy the game.
