Yeah, it's like Sony filed a patent for something I've been doing in the sack for years. Start off strong, trying to impress. Use the longsword. After a few minutes, just lay there. Switch to the dagger. Leave them wanting more, which will cost $59.99 and applicable taxes.

So 1st they take away features in the ps3 hardware as time went on to save money. that's understandable due to less parts needing to be made. But now they are taking away features in demos? Seriously Sony? But I guess to offer the full game at once... hmmm, wait, didn't Sony say they were going to stop releasing Full PS3 games on PSN?

You know...some patents make me mad, like "Single Click Purchasing".. I mean, WTF? So, if I have a website that enables purchasing in two clicks, I can't streamline that into one without running afoul of an effing PATENT?

But then comes along a patent like this and I'm just really not bothered at all. What will they patent next? Crapping in your own mouth?

This is kind of like a company paying to advertise a commercial and then lopping off 5 seconds of it every time it's aired. Telling you less and less about their product the more you're exposed to it.

I'm playing your damn demo to decide if I want to buy your game. Why are you making my decision harder?

At least they're patenting this, so hopefully other developers aren't stupid enough to actually pay to use this "feature".

It seems like they just took the idea of a game teasing you by starting with all weapons, then taking them away a few screens later.

I suppose I can see why they want to do this. I'm not a big enough fan of racing games to buy but enjoy playing one from time to time, so I just download the demos and keep the ones I enjoy on my PS3, the one or two tracks each demo comes with keeps me busy for a while, but I never actually go out and buy the game. Same thing with fighting games.

I don't really get this....isn't the point of a demo to give someone who is on the fence about a game a taste to see if they like it or not ? I don't see any benefit of this over demo's now.

This pisses me off because it's not really an invention, it's just an idea for an invention. Anyone could think this up--in fact, it's already been thought up. Patents like this are just overbroad garabage that companies buy up in order to sue each other and try to stifle competition. After all, it's easier to sue people into the stone age then actually make a better product for less!

Some demos are already crippled versions of the full game. When you buy it you just buy the unlock code. Bionic Commando comes to mind.

What I would like Sony to concentrate their efforts on is to roll their updates into the original file for games from the PSN. Why the hell do I download a 330 MB game then before I can play it download another 310 MB of 'update'. There HAS to be some overlap there...

This conversation is useless. Everyone is bitching that "Sony is screwing us over taking away content" with this patent. Doesn't anyone realize that THIS IS A PATENT? It means nothing other than the people at Sony coming up with AN IDEA that they are trying to secure before somebody else does. If someone else uses it they can get royalties for that. In no way this indicates that this will be implemented this year, this generation of consoles, or even ever. Not every patent is used. Not only that but you can find that everyone does file them all the time.

Stop whining and move on to more important things.

A demo that degrades

Or that a patent has been filed on such a basic idea, that it shouldn't be patented in the first place. It's not like it's a formula for cold fusion. We're talking about removing or lessoning elements here.

I hope both fail.

yes this idea seems like trash from the gamer side but from the dev side you have to look at it this way.

why would i let my consumers play my game when i can make a demo that shows the full game at start and then if they want to continue to play have to pay for the full game. Its genius actually.

take the skate demo, you do the tutorial then can play basically the whole game (to a point obviously) and you can just restart the demo and do it again, why would i go out and pay for it if all i want is a few minutes of free skating. see the point?

i think it all sucks if they do this but its pretty smart.

I assume this patent applies to freely downloadable demos. In which case, this is not like the DIVX system at all. DIVX needed specific hardware. They used disposable discs (we don't need any more pollution, thanks). You had to have a DIVX account to use the video. Plus, the quality of the video was almost always worse than DVD.

No, I wouldn't compare this to the horror that was DIVX.
